Won Everything with Chelsea FC (as a West Ham fan... I know) FM12 (I am sure most of the things are cross-compatible with FM13).
Follow my instructions and hopefully you will experience the same level of success that I did. I have included plenty of screenshots for you to be able to adjust your tactics and players accordingly. All I ask in return is that you 'like' my Guide/ Walk-through and comment on it which will keep it alive in forums.
Enjoy...
Season One
1. Set the formation. The formation to choose is as the following screenshot. Ignore the players in the positions for now and focus on setting up the team as I will teach you.

2. Once you have the general layout of the formation correct, make sure you include Workload 'High' (bottom left of the screen) and Additional Focus Area set to 'Teamwork' (not as the pic shows). This can be adapted for individual circumstances and matches later on.
3. Team instructions - set as follows:-

4. Below shows the Player Instructions you will set. Be sure to enter all fields as I have done. One incorrect field can mean a wholly different tactics system:-

5. Once you have set the correct team and player instructions it is important to make sure you fit the right players to the system. I will guide you as follows. The people you should put in the position will vary depending on what update level you have and how new all the teams are so I will go according to what was the default team for me at the beginning. [Key - FC=First Choice; BC=Backup Choice; BBC=Backup Backup Choice]
GK*
Key stats for the goalkeeper position are: Handling, Positioning and Reflexes. You will note that our GK is set to Sweeper Keeper which means he must be relatively quick off his lines to shut down dangerous attacks from the opposition. Key position as due to the nature of the way the team play he will have to cover a lot of time and be an excellent shot-stopper. FC: Cech; BC: Courtois.
RB: Acceleration, Pace, Tackling should be very good. FC: Ivanovic. BC: Kalas.
LB: (stats as RB): FC: Cole; BC: Bertrand
RCB: Note - the RCB is a Ball Playing Defender. He needs excellent tackling, marking, heading, jumping skills. As he is a ball playing defender he needs to have good passing and teamwork abilities too. He leads from the back. FC: Terry; BC: Cahill.
LCB: Same as RCB with less importance paid to passing and teamwork (though for a top premiership club these must be good at around 14/15 at least) FC: David Luiz; BC: Cahill.
CM: * This is a key position in the team. You will note he is a Ball Winning Midfielder. The candidate who will fill this role will be the Roy Keane/ Patrick Viera type of player. If Essien is still at the club the position suits him. This is a position that needs to be focussed on so if you do not have a good player for this role, buy one at around £10m-15m mark. FC: Essien; BC: Meirieles or Romeu.
MCR: This is a centre of the park player who works both ways and will support the CM. FC: Lampard; BC: Ramires; BBC: Oscar/ McEachran.
MCL: * This player is another vital part of the formation. He is mainly supporting the lone striker. Imagine a fast Paul Scholes here and you get the idea. Rooney would be a good player here too or Van Persie. The player must be quick, have lots of flair, long shots, finishing, passing, acceleration, positioning, technique. FC: Eden Hazard; BC: Lampard. Lampard is excellent here because of his finishing and long shooting ability. He is not first choice because his lack of pace makes him less desirable for the role here and he is better utilised as MCR. Eden Hazard is brilliant here as long as he stays injury-free and will bag you lots of goals and assist many too.
AMR: Fast crosser of the ball. FC: Ramires; BC: Oscar. I really am not a fan of Oscar so he is more or less a backup for me. He is too greedy and wastes too many opportunities. Consider loaning him out for money even but get a good backup in to replace him. He will grow but he needs a lot of experience to calm his rash attempts at flair. Yossi Benayoun (my Israeli friend) is a good person to play in this position but he does get tired quickly so look to substitute him. He gets important goals at good times.
AML: One word: Mata. Do not sell him. FC: Mata; BC: Eden Hazard/ De Bruyne. De Bruyne I always feel guilty about because he is underrated and I feel if I played him a bit more would really shine. In any other team he would do brilliantly but at Chelsea with the likes of Mata and Eden Hazard, it is difficult for him to get a look in.
FC:* Very important position. He needs to be banging in around 40+ goals a season for you with all the assistance from behind him with the likes of Mata, Hazard and Lampard. FC: Torres. BC: Lukaku. Unlike real life, Torres is not beset by a lack of confidence. He will bang many many goals for you. DO NOT SELL HIM.
Transfers
5. While I have set up the players in the positions above it is important to complement your team with a showering of talent. In the 3 seasons I have played so far the following players were bought and sold:-
2011/2012 Season (First Season)
![]()
2012/2013 Season (Second Season)
![]()
2013/2014 Season (Third Season)
![]()
Of all these transfers in and out the key ones are as follows:-
* Buy Edinson Cavani whatever the price. Play him instead of Ramires as AMR or as a backup for Torres up front. He will bang you 40+ goals as a ST but play him on AMR and you will get around the same and be able to play Torres too.
*Doumbia/Yaya Sanogo/Huntelaar were experiments for me and they are recommended by many people. I was not impressed by any of them and ended up selling Doumbia and Huntleaar for a slight loss. Sanogo is more of a prospect but do not expect him to bang you 40+ goals. He will miss chance after chance and you will be scratching your head.
* De Jong was unhappy at Man City and is a similar player to Yaya Toure who is perfect as a competition for Essien. Sven Bender and Javi Martinez are excellent to buy. Sven will moan if he is not played and to be honest he is great prospect for the future so consider loaning him out if he moans. He is a good buy and will turn into a future CM that you want. Martinez is brilliant and I forked out £30m to bring him in. He can play as a DC or MC. I prefer him as a MC.
*Sneijder is excellent competition for Mata/Hazard. He is normally a sub but I often play him. Expensive but once you win things in your first year you can afford the luxury of splashing out on him.
* Mascherano is world class replacement for Essien/De Jong and it is a battle between him and Javi Martinez in the 3rd season who will play in that role. They each have their advantages.
* Man Utd paid £15m for Zaha after he ran the Championship ragged. Buy him and use him and Lukaku and the hot prospects coming through the ranks up front.
* Azpilicueta provides competition for Ivanovic (who by the way is excellent and can even be played instead of Terry if Terry is injured and you have someone else to cover RB). He is faster and a better crosser than Ivanovic and defensively he is sound.
*Victor Ruiz is a little player I discovered from Valencia. He is very versatile and can cover a lot of positions.
*Simon Kjaer is my long-term replacement for John Terry. He is a leader and an excellent defender. He is almost knocking Terry out - :-) - as we speak. James Tomkins is a nice player from my team West Ham and in real life is going to be big. On the game he is useful along with Cahill as cover or for the cup matches when things are already fairly safe. He is reliable and a good header of the ball.
6. For the most part listen to what your staff tell you in backroom meetings unless it seems perverse, e.g. training regimes.

As you can see in the 3rd season I opted for a change in assistant manager. Eddie Newton was a bit too defensive in team talks for me and wasn't what I was looking for. Consider switching earlier on to someone with excellent stats with at least a continental reputation.

8. As a result you should find yourself doing very well. Here is some of the results that you can expect, check out the results I had over the 3 seasons and my achievements. 111 goals in first season and 100 in second season.:-
