On my game as ipswich it occured to me a killer tactic would be to play a 4-5-1 with 2 central midfields, 1 AM and an AML and an AMR. If anyone knows of a good set of these could they let me know please :)
you mean 4-2-3-1

When you play that formation you are probably looking to create more in the middle of the park. the AML AMC AMR all are wanted to be working more central. even though its a AMR the tactic is to get the wingers in more central because of their creativity.

So you can play slightly narrow with that formation.

Also with those 2 central midfielder i would recommend 2 DM's in that position OR 1 balanced and 1 DM. or 2 balanced if you have a reasonably strong team and playing at home.

But you have 2 CM's/DM's because you want your full backs to push up so they can act as "wingers" when the team is attacking.

This formation is common to south american teams and portugal.

I would also recommend that your AMR and AML are on free roles as this will create more mobile play overall attackingly for your team.

You will want your AMC to be highly creative and good passer of the ball. And you want him central so dont give him far too much creative freedom. He is mainly there to give a real support to your striker.

When u usually play with a AMC under a lone striker then u can say he should or will act as a second striker. But in this formation you want your AML and AMR to be the second strikers.

you can also make your AML and AMR to change positions with each other.

there shouldnt be much gap between the defence and the midfield because of your 2 cm's. They are gonna act as a cover for both attack and the defence. So at times you might not get tooo high ratings on them but they will still be doing a good job(hopefully).
It's really great tactic, I used it a lot in FM08, now I have changed it from 4-2-3-1 to 4-1-2-2-1, because i need to play more defensively with West Ham but although it looks like defensive tactic if you play it in the right way it can be a real killer. ATM in 6th in the Prem and I might start a blog when i finish first season...but enough about me...

4-2-3-1 is tactic that I recommend to all, just follow Reds instruction and you'll have no problems. But I didn't do even half that Red told you and it was perfect for me, I only used my AMC as the playmaker gave him free role and let him use all his creativity...
If you do use this tactic let us know how it goes please... I used this tactic on fm 08 and it was great because i had the three AMs running back when the opposition had possesion so that it became a 4-5-1. I conceded 9 goals in one season with Blackburn =D. But after SI changed the meaning of the arrows this is no longer possible so im back to 4-4-2. Long and short of it is i wanno no if 4-2-3-1 is still a good tactic so please let me know how it goes.

u can use a 4-4-1-1 with a target man that works with a defensive team
i play very attacking even though its not the smartest sometimes.
but i use 3-2-3-2.

i know ur not gunna be able to afford all these but once you get players that play the same way as these then it works.

you need a good cb nd a good keeper (toure/vidic) (casillas)

some1 like ramos rb, some1 like bale lb. both acting as second wingers so cb can b under a lot o pressure but he's good enough to deal with it.

one defensive mid (someone like de rossi/tymoshuk) and one balanced mid with good passing (xavi, pirlo, fabregas etc).

AML/AMR are free role second strikers (messi, ronaldo, silva, balotteli)

AMC good long shots, creativity nd passing (sneijder, gerrard, totti, lampard)

2 fast strikers like torres, benzema, villa, eto, etc.
OR
1 fast striker (torres) and one target striker laying the ball off to ur fast striker or ur attacking mids (santa cruz, drogba)

if ur man city u cud afford players that are similar to these and i was unbeaten in d league for a whole season in my 4th season wit man city.

but bein man city is cheating hahaha

I am playing currently as QPR in championship and lying 3rd on table. I use modified 4-5-1 attacking tactic. So I select this tactic and rearranged players as shown below.

Set defense to pushup
set all my midfield to Run forward
Set all my forwards to run forward
Set Blackstock's mentality lower than hegulson ans set hegulson as targetman as he is good header.
Set passing to long ball mostly sometime to mixed

so this is my base tactics And keep twiking tactics as per my Assistance manager advise during game.

Cerny / Lee Camp

Ramage Connolly Stewart M.Ball / Delanny

M.Rowlands Miller/Mahon

M.Routledge Lee Cook / Epirham

D. Blackstock / Balanta Hegulson / Vine
Mate, You can NEVER go wrong when following RED'S advice!!
Hello all, basically i wanna thank RED, i was strugglin with my everton team, just started a new game, after 1st 9 games i was in 14th, i was experimenting on various tactics and formations, after following your instructions above, i have now won my last 6 out of my last 8 games conceding just 2 goals, which has put me up to 3rd. so hopefully this 4231 formation will be a must have.
Thanks again, helped me alot.
