PORTSMOUTH FC

Portsmouth FC background:

Founded in 1898, Portsmouth are a professional club now playing in the npower League 2. The club play their home games at Fratton Park. The club is affectionately know as Pompey and retains a fierce rivalry with Southampton. The club enjoyed their best spell of success in the 1930s and their last competition win came as recently as 2008 when the won the F.A cup under the guidance of Harry Redknapp.
Portsmouth were moderately successful in the first decade of the 21st century, especially during the 2007–08 Premier League season, when they won the FA Cup, beating Cardiff City 1–0 in the final. They subsequently qualified for the 2008–09 UEFA Cup (now Europa League) competing against European heavyweights such as seven times European Cup winners A.C. Milan. During this period, Portsmouth were recognised to have a large number of international footballers, including England players Glen Johnson and Jermain Defoe, as well as Peter Crouch, David James and Sol Campbell. However, financial problems soon set in and Portsmouth were relegated to the Football League Championship in 2010. In 2012 they were again relegated, to League One, and again, in 2013, to League Two. They will therefore begin the 2013-14 season in the fourth tier of the English football league system for the first time since the late 1970s.
Portsmouth became the largest fan-owned football club in English Football history after the Pompey Supporters Trust (PST) successfully gained possession of Fratton Park in April 2013.

Manager profile

Name: Connor Nicholson
Age: 25
Nationality: Scottish
Favourite clubs: Celtic, Tottenham Hotspur
Reputation: Sunday League footballer
UEFA coaching license: Attained in 2011, worked as a coach at Queen of the South FC for 2 years under the guidance of Gordon Chisholm. Ended my 4 year reign at QoS after their next manager Kenny Brannigan decided to leave. Looked closely into management and thought that with the help of my peers I will now be able to fulfill my dreams of becoming a Football Manager.

I was tired, it was a Monday night and there was nothing on the TV as usual "Fuck Downton Abbey!" I sat on my couch with my TV dinner and the cat curled up in a ball on the floor. "It's 9:26 and I'm eating TV dinners, something has to change, what has my life come to. I've lost my job as a coach, my wife left me and I live with a cat for Christ sake!" Even though I had no job in sports I would still sit in my suit and play a bit of Football Manager every night, keeping the ambitions of winning the UEFA Champions League with Wrexham alive. After playing for a few hours I decided to shut the PC down and go to sleep to dream about managing a football club.

A good start mate hope to see this go far

What a beautiful day in Dumfries! The birds chirping and the sun blazing! .....Was it fuck. it was pissing down as usual and all I could think about was playing Football Manager. I powered on the PC and went online to check if there were any vacant managerial jobs going, but as usual there were none.

Good luck I tried Portsmouth and gave up.

Every day was getting harder, I was running frighteningly low on money and food. But this day didn't feel like no ordinary day, it felt like a day of opportunity, a BIG one! I once again began checking the web for any Managerial jobs going and then I see this.

THE JOB APPLICATION

"I don't reckon they will buy the FM achievements part of the application but it's good to see I know what I'm doing haha. Hopefully my past experience with QoS will cement my chances of taking over the club. A man can only dream you know! I find it intriguing that a club that was so big a few years ago, playing in Europe and signing players for massive prices has plunged into the depths of the lower leagues of England and now struggle to sign players from Bury, Crewe and Fleetwood for crying out loud! I reckon I could build my own legacy there. A rebirth is on the cards." I went to bed that night thinking about a reply, even a no would mean progress. Oh boy, I didn't know what was in store for me, did I?

13th June 2013

As soon as I woke up I jumped out of bed and ran to my PC, although trying to stay as professional and mature as possible. I haven't been this excited since Christmas back in 96. I began typing my E-mail address into the Hotmail log-in box, making multiple errors, I finally logged in.

There it was. The E-mail I had been waiting on. No, it wasn't a Facebook request from Farmville, it was the reply from Portsmouth Football Club. I clicked on the E-mail and began reading.

"hello, we are replying on behalf of the board of Portsmouth FC, we would like to arrange a telephone meeting before we can begin talks over the future of the club. Please get back to us with a suitable time to call you."

I think a little bit of poop came out when I read the E-mail. I had done it, I had gotten a reply from Portsmouth about the vacant post at the club. I quickly sent my phone number and a time and waited eagerly for the phone call.

This began playing, and it meant only one thing, my ringtone was playing. I quickly picked the phone up and began talking to the Portsmouth representatives.
