Premier League Opening Day: Chelsea, Arsenal in emphatic first day victories

The Barclays Premier League kicked off today, with Chelsea and Arsenal two of many teams who got off to a good start with victories.

Arsenal 3 - 1 Aston Villa (Emirates Stadium)
The first goal of the entire season came through striker Lukas Podolski in the 3rd minute of the match, followed by a second from Santi Cazorla just before half time. However, the Villains pulled one back via star player Christian Benteke but it wasn't enough as Theo Walcott made it 3-1 to the Londoners.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Stoke City (Anfield)
The first half was full of controversy, with Stoke having 2 goals disallowed for offside, Cameron Jerome being the culprit both times. However, the second half was Liverpool dominated, as Iago Aspas scored the first just past the hour mark, while Coutinho doubled the lead on his debut.

Norwich City 1 - 1 Everton (Carrow Road)
With large expectations on Everton in this game and the league, the pressure was on for both sides to impress. It was the Toffees who opened the scoring, however, early in the first half. Norwich weren't going down easily, however, and equalised in stoppage time through Ricky van Wolfswinkel on his Canaries debut.

Sunderland 2 - 3 Fulham (Stadium of Light)
This match was intense through the entire game, with the first piece of action being a penalty given in the 8th minute after a dirty tackle from Sunderland's Lee Cattermole . The penalty was scored by Dimitar Berbatov but an equaliser came through Jozy Altidore just after half time. With the game now on, both teams fought their hardest to grab points, and it was Sunderland who grabbed the next goal, after a mistake lead to Stephane Sessegnon putting the Black Cats ahead. However, some quickfire attacking caught Sunderland off-guard and Berbatov got a second goal. In stoppage time, Greek midfielder Giorgios Karagounis snatched the win for the Cottagers and devastated their opponents.

Swansea City 1 - 1 Manchester United (Liberty Stadium)
After losing Sir Alex Ferguson last season, Man United have seemed to have lost their touch. Swansea took advantage of this quickly as Wilfried Bony opened the scoring within the first 15 minutes. However, Man United quickly equalised 3 minutes later through Robin van Persie to finish all scoring. However, the drama wasn't done there, as David De Gea was red-carded for violent conduct. Michu stepped up to take the penalty, but missed and left the scoring 1-1.

West Bromwich Albion 2 - 0 Southampton (Hawthorns)
West Brom impressed last season, finishing in an impressive 8th place (I believe :P ), and many believe they can do it again. New signing Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring for them just after the 30th minute, while the loaned Bebe finally did something good late in the game by making it 2-0 to the home side.

West Ham United 1 - 1 Cardiff City (Boleyn Ground)
A second Welsh team in Cardiff entered the Premier League this season, and are hoping to stay there. However, it wasn't looking good when Andy Carroll scored early in the second half, making it 1-0 to the Hammers just past the hour mark. Now playing better than before, Cardiff equalised through Fraizer Campbell in the 89th minute to make it 1-1.

Chelsea 4 - 1 Hull City (Stamford Bridge)
Another promoted team are hoping to get off to a good start, but away to Chelsea will be a tough ask for Hull. Two goals (via Eden Hazard and Juan Mata ) in ten minutes showed Hull who's boss. Pulling one back through the loaned Nicklas Bendtner before half time wasn't enough to stop the Blues who scored another just after half time through Andre Schurrle and made it 4 in stoppage time when Romelu Lukaku hit the back of the net.

Crystal Palace 1 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur (Selhurst Park)
The final promoted team faced Champions League contender Tottenham who have made many changes to their squad. Palace got off to a good start when Victor Anichebe opened the scoring, that being it for the first half. However, Spurs quickly responded in the second half, Robert Soldado scoring almost straight away. But it wouldn't be a Tottenham game without Gareth Bale scoring, which he did and had tore Palace apart.

Manchester City 2 - 0 Newcastle United (Etihad Stadium)
The final game is at the Etihad Stadium where Man City host Newcastle United a game where the favourites were clear. Strangely, nothing happened at half time, and a bore draw was expected. However, in the second half, City opened the scoring through Stevan Jovetic on his debut. 2 minutes later, a second came along through Sergio Aguero which finished off the scoring.
Great start here Alex.. Good to see Chelsea win! and Cardiff draw.

100% for Chelsea, Spurs; 0% for Villa, Stoke

Only 1 draw this week, in 11 fixtures. Let's have a look at all the results.

Chelsea 2 - 1 Aston Villa (Stamford Bridge)
After losing against Arsenal last week, a game away to Chelsea isn't exactly what Villa needed. However, it started well for the Villains when Karim El Ahmadi opened the scoring. At half time, the score remained 1-0. However, a complete change in strike force for the Blues ruined Villa's happiness, with Romelu Lukaku snatching a goal 5 minutes into the second half, Fernando Torres completing the scoring in the 78th minute. 2-1.

Aston Villa 0 - 1 Liverpool (Villa Park)
Another game for the poor Villains against a top team, Liverpool this time. A rather boring match until the second half, with a disallowed goal from Christian Benteke being the only controversy. However, it wasn't until stoppage time that Luis Suarez cruelly snatched the win. 0-1.

Everton 2 - 2 West Bromwich Albion (Goodison Park)
With both sides getting off to decent starts, no one wanted to give up their unbeaten record just yet. Proving not to be a one-hit wonder, Bebe opened to scoring for the Baggies despite going down to 10 men early on when Liam Ridgewell violently tackled Gerard Deulofeu. Deulofeu then equalised for Everton seconds before half time. Sadly, there was no more action until the 81st minute, where Arouna Kone pulled the Toffees ahead, only to be cancelled out by a second goal by Bebe to leave it at 2-2.

Fulham 1 - 0 Arsenal (Craven Cottage)
Winning starts for both teams made this match exciting. While it wasn't full of goals, chances were plentiful. Goalkeeping was exceptional in this match, except for Szczesny's second half mistake which put Fulham ahead through Hugo Rodallega. Luckily for the home side, they were able to hold on to a 1-0 win to put them on a 100% record.

Hull City 3 - 2 Norwich City (KC Stadium)
If they're gonna have any hope in the Premier League this season, Hull would have to win this one. Home to Norwich would be an easy win for most sides, but is that the case? Optimism rose from the KC Stadium when 2 goals came in 5 minutes from Matty Fryatt and Danny Graham. However, by half time, it was back to 2-2 when Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Scott Sinclair equalised. Norwich were finished off, however, by Ahmed Elmohamady's 63rd minute goal. 3-2.

Newcastle United 2 - 1 West Ham United (St James' Park)
Both teams got off to dodgy starts, so will be looking for a win here. It was Papiss Cisse who opened the scoring for Newcastle early in the second half, with Hatem Ben Arfa doubling the lead. Razvan Rat scored a late goal so make it 2-1, but it was no more than a consolation for the Hammers.

Southampton 3 - 1 Sunderland (St Mary's)
With a 0% record for both teams, a win here would be crucial in the long term. Sunderland opened the scoring through Jozy Altidore in the first half, but that's where things stopped for the Black Cats. In the second half, Southampton came back stronger than ever before, scoring 2 goals in 3 minutes. These were scored by Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez in the early second half. The Saints finished it off with a Victor Wanyama goal in the 86th minute.

Stoke City 1 - 2 Crystal Palace
A bizarre game if you look back. Palace opened the scoring through the aging Kevin Phillips just moments before Stoke equalise through a 40-yard screamer from Maurice Edu. That was all for the first half. Then, Victor Anichebe stunned the nation by scoring a winner in the 106th minute. 106. 16 minutes of added time. Someone's had some Fergie time...

Cardiff City 1 - 2 Manchester City
A dominant game for the Citizens where the scoreline should've been bigger. A mistake from Joe Hart let Andreas Cornelius open the scoring for Cardiff but Man City were dominating. Stevan Jovetic equalised after the half time mark, amazingly. It was followed by Fernandinho scoring an easy shot.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Swansea City (White Hart Lane)
A good start for Spurs so far has them in 7th after game one, but all can change against the unpredictable Swansea. Gareth Bale (surprise surprise) opened the scoring just over 10 minutes in, followed by an Aaron Lennon goal in the second half.

Manchester United 2 - 3 Chelsea (Old Trafford)
This was a game that would always be exciting. Robin van Persie scored 1 of many goals, followed by Shinji Kagawa doubling the lead. Now the comeback. Eden Hazard grabbed 2 goals in quick succession in the second half, followed by a Romelu Lukaku winner.

Table so far...

1. Chelsea - 9 (Played: 3)
2. Man City - 6
3. Tottenham - 6
4. Liverpool - 6

5. Fulham - 6

6. West Brom - 4
7. Arsenal - 3
8. Crystal Palace - 3
9. Southampton - 3
10. Newcastle - 3
11. Hull - 3
12. Everton - 2
13. Man United - 1
14. Norwich - 1
15. Cardiff - 1
16. West Ham - 1
17. Swansea - 1

18. Sunderland - 0
19. Stoke - 0
20. Aston Villa - 0

No need for anyone to worry just yet, though ;)

Rivalries and goals in two 6 goal games

With 9 games this week, 2 being fierce rivalries. With a total of 30 goals, let's see all the results.

Cardiff City 2 - 2 Everton (Cardiff City Stadium)
Both teams are yet to win a game in the league yet, so are looking for some success. Just before the end of the first half, Gerard Deulofeu opened the scoring for Everton which was doubled by Ross Barkley near the start of the second (half). Enter Nicky Maynard and Craig Noone, who both scored in quick succession to make the final score 2-2.

Crystal Palace 1 - 0 Sunderland
This was a boring game. Kagisho Dikgacoi scored, that was it. 1-0.
