Premier League Opening Day: Chelsea, Arsenal in emphatic first day victories
The
Barclays Premier League kicked off today, with
Chelsea and
Arsenal two of many teams who got off to a good start with victories.
Arsenal 3 - 1 Aston Villa (Emirates Stadium)
The first goal of the entire season came through striker
Lukas Podolski in the 3rd minute of the match, followed by a second from
Santi Cazorla just before half time. However, the
Villains pulled one back via star player
Christian Benteke but it wasn't enough as
Theo Walcott made it 3-1 to the Londoners.
Liverpool 2 - 0 Stoke City (Anfield)
The first half was full of controversy, with
Stoke having 2 goals disallowed for offside,
Cameron Jerome being the culprit both times. However, the second half was
Liverpool dominated, as
Iago Aspas scored the first just past the hour mark, while
Coutinho doubled the lead on his debut.
Norwich City 1 - 1 Everton (Carrow Road)
With large expectations on
Everton in this game and the league, the pressure was on for both sides to impress. It was the
Toffees who opened the scoring, however, early in the first half.
Norwich weren't going down easily, however, and equalised in stoppage time through
Ricky van Wolfswinkel on his
Canaries debut.
Sunderland 2 - 3 Fulham (Stadium of Light)
This match was intense through the entire game, with the first piece of action being a penalty given in the 8th minute after a dirty tackle from
Sunderland's Lee Cattermole . The penalty was scored by
Dimitar Berbatov but an equaliser came through
Jozy Altidore just after half time. With the game now on, both teams fought their hardest to grab points, and it was
Sunderland who grabbed the next goal, after a mistake lead to
Stephane Sessegnon putting the
Black Cats ahead. However, some quickfire attacking caught
Sunderland off-guard and
Berbatov got a second goal. In stoppage time, Greek midfielder
Giorgios Karagounis snatched the win for the
Cottagers and devastated their opponents.
Swansea City 1 - 1 Manchester United (Liberty Stadium)
After losing
Sir Alex Ferguson last season,
Man United have seemed to have lost their touch.
Swansea took advantage of this quickly as
Wilfried Bony opened the scoring within the first 15 minutes. However,
Man United quickly equalised 3 minutes later through
Robin van Persie to finish all scoring. However, the drama wasn't done there, as
David De Gea was red-carded for violent conduct.
Michu stepped up to take the penalty, but missed and left the scoring 1-1.
West Bromwich Albion 2 - 0 Southampton (Hawthorns)
West Brom impressed last season, finishing in an impressive 8th place (I believe

), and many believe they can do it again. New signing
Nicolas Anelka opened the scoring for them just after the 30th minute, while the loaned
Bebe finally did something good late in the game by making it 2-0 to the home side.
West Ham United 1 - 1 Cardiff City (Boleyn Ground)
A second Welsh team in
Cardiff entered the
Premier League this season, and are hoping to stay there. However, it wasn't looking good when
Andy Carroll scored early in the second half, making it 1-0 to the
Hammers just past the hour mark. Now playing better than before,
Cardiff equalised through
Fraizer Campbell in the 89th minute to make it 1-1.
Chelsea 4 - 1 Hull City (Stamford Bridge)
Another promoted team are hoping to get off to a good start, but away to
Chelsea will be a tough ask for
Hull. Two goals (via
Eden Hazard and
Juan Mata ) in ten minutes showed
Hull who's boss. Pulling one back through the loaned
Nicklas Bendtner before half time wasn't enough to stop the
Blues who scored another just after half time through
Andre Schurrle and made it 4 in stoppage time when
Romelu Lukaku hit the back of the net.
Crystal Palace 1 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur (Selhurst Park)
The final promoted team faced Champions League contender
Tottenham who have made many changes to their squad.
Palace got off to a good start when
Victor Anichebe opened the scoring, that being it for the first half. However,
Spurs quickly responded in the second half,
Robert Soldado scoring almost straight away. But it wouldn't be a
Tottenham game without
Gareth Bale scoring, which he did and had tore
Palace apart.
Manchester City 2 - 0 Newcastle United (Etihad Stadium)
The final game is at the
Etihad Stadium where
Man City host
Newcastle United a game where the favourites were clear. Strangely, nothing happened at half time, and a bore draw was expected. However, in the second half,
City opened the scoring through
Stevan Jovetic on his debut. 2 minutes later, a second came along through
Sergio Aguero which finished off the scoring.
