Red Bulls Appoint Gooner: The Story Begins
New York Red Bulls have appointed ex-England player Jim Gooner as their manager. This will be Gooner's first managerial experience.
The New York Red Bulls are an American professional soccer team based in Harrison, New Jersey, representing the New York City metropolitan area. The team competes in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). It is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS, having competed in the league since its inception.
The team was a founding member of MLS (1996), but has gone through several name changes. The team was originally known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars through 1997. From the 1998 season through the 2005 season, the team was known as simply the MetroStars. On March 9, 2006, the team was sold to Red Bull GmbH, leading to the team's current name.
They are the only original MLS franchise to have not won any significant trophy (be it regular season, playoffs, or knockout competition) since inception. The team's best result in MLS play was the MLS Cup final in 2008. In the US Open Cup, the MetroStars reached three semifinals (1997, 1998, 2000), before finally reaching their first final in 2003, losing 1–0 to the Chicago Fire. On August 26, 2000, the Metros' Clint Mathis set an MLS record by scoring five goals in a game against the Dallas Burn.
This is how the mls works
Qualifiers for the playoffs are:
The top three teams from each conference
The next two best MLS teams, regardless of conference
There are three rounds of playoff matches. There are Conference Semi Finals, Conference Finals, and the MLS Cup Final. The Conference Semi Finals are played over two legs, with the lower placing team hosting the first match. The Conference Championship is one-off, hosted by the higher placing advancing team. The MLS Cup Championship is hosted at a neutral site.
The MLS lumps all teams together into one table to decide on a couple of awards:
The first place team overall wins the MLS Supporters Shield and qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League
The first through fourth place teams overall qualify for the SuperLiga
New York land Gooner in a tough situation.
I join half way into the season, on 5th july 2011. New York are struggling in the league and I am determined to fix the season.
Here is the overall table

New York are held
New York 2-2 Toronto F.C.
This was a disappointing performance and I have learnt we are really lacking in the full back department.
Rafael Marquez scored an o.g.in the 33rd minute. We pulled it back level through a Keel header from a corner and then we went ahead in the 50th from another Keel header. It was levelled again by Joao Plata.

Henry Masterclass Gives Gooner his First Win
New York 3-0 D.C. United
A delightful performance from my team gave me a convincing win over fierce rivals D.C United. Thierry Henry gave me the lead on 12 minutes when he spun round a defender and placed one across the keeper and it went in off the post. Henry got his 2nd on 53 minutes with a rebound off the keeper into an open net. Jan Gunnar Soli added the third when he slid in to get on the end of a low and very well placed cross.

Keel's Golden forehead strikes again as New York leave Chivas broken
Chivas 0-4 New York
Well, Well. What a performance. My lads don't look anything like they did in the first game now.
Keel's "
Golden Forehead" put us ahead after just 50 seconds. David Lopes gave away a penalty and good old Thierry Henry stepped up and put it away in the 19th minute. Joel Lindpere scored scored a rebound in the 58th minute to make it 3-0. He will be greatly missed as he is leaving when his contract expires. The star of the team Henry converted another penalty given away by the same player David Lopes to make it 4-0. A great performance. I thought I would also mention that David Lopes got a 3.6 Match rating! Hilarious.
