FM 2016 Misc Files - FM16 Audio Commentary Patch
Using this sound pack you can add audio commentary to Football Manager 2016.
Please note that the audio is only available in English.

  • Original Patch for FM12 - FM14 by MBarbaric
  • Ported to FM15 by zzpiggy
  • Modified Commentary Sound Files by Bart
  • Realistic Sound Patch by DazS8

How to install Audio Commentary on FM16

1. Exit FM16 Completely

2. Backup your "events" & "sounds" folders
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\events\
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\sounds\

Simply copy these folders to somewhere else out of the FM16 installation directory, so if something goes wrong we can restore them.
Once backup is made, delete the "sounds" folder.

3. Apply Patch
Move the extracted folders "events" and "sounds" to:
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\

You will be asked to merge / overwrite some files and folders, click OK/YES to confirm.
You have a backup of those from the previous step so nothing to worry about.

4. Delete Events Files In Updates Directory
No need to touch "events" files in "updates" directory, but in case any odd thing happen, it's recommended to delete them.

Backup first of course. Make a copy of the "events" folder within all "update-16XX" directories:
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\updates\update-1601\events\
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\updates\update-1610\events\
\steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2016\data\updates\update-1611\events\
and so on... to somewhere out of the FM16 installation directory.

Then delete all files within. It will be either 1 or 2 files: "match_events.xml" and/or "match_sounds.cfg".

5. In-Game Preferences
Start FM16 and go to "Preferences > Match" tab.
Make sure that "Use sound in match" is ticked and "Volume" slide is high enough.

Then go to "Preferences > Interface" tab.
Click the "Clear Cache" button.
Enable "Reload skin when confirming changes in Preferences".
Click the "Reload Skin" button.

That's it. Jump into matches and enjoy!

Known Issues

Sometimes more than one audio commentaries might come out together, sadly there's no way to fix that.

I got this to work with no issues at all although it is not as straightforward anymore as in previous versions, this is how to get it working in Football Manager 2018:

    1) Copy "match_events.xml" and "match_sounds.cfg" from the commentary patch to your installation folder: "Football Manager 2018\data\simatch\events"

    2) a) Use the "resource archiver" and unpack the file "simatchviewer.fmf" which can be found in "Football Manager 2018\data".

    b) Save the files in a separate directory.

    c) Delete the contents of the "sounds" folder and replace it with the sounds in the commentary patch. (Important: make sure there are no subfolders, the sound files need to be put directly in the "sounds" folder, otherwise the sounds won't play).

    d) Use the "resource archiver" to create a new "simatchviewer.fmf" file from the changed folder with "sounds" folder replaced with the commentary contents in it.

    e) Move the "simatchviewer.fmf" file to the installation folder: "Football Manager 2018\data" and replace the existing file.

Reload the cache and play your Football Manager 2018 game with live commentary again!

I tested this and works already for weeks without any issues.

ALWAYS make a backup of you original files in case something goes wrong or you want to revert back to the original sounds

    @Dazs8 and anyone else interested

At first it didn't work. In the sounds folder all sound files were in another folder called "default". I moved them out in the sounds folder and now it works fine. I didn't touch the events folders in the updates folder, but it seems to be functioning properly. Do you recommend I replace them anyway? You might want to update the description above with this "fix". This is a great mod by the way, thanks!

Its been that long since I did anything to this that I cant even remember what to do, yes its outdated and really needs someone to spend all their time on this one project, something I just cant do.
Maybe someone else will take it on.

Daz, do you plan to upgrade the version by adding more any time soon?
  • DAZS8's avatar
you have to install it in events and sounds folders of si updates too
    17.1 for example
  • mattrob77's avatar
I follow the steps, delete the files in the events folder, etc etc, but can't hear anything in game :(

I have sounds but it seems to be the old one. I don't have any commentators voice.
  • Raja's avatar
It works. Follow the instructions and you can see the commentary working in no time.

    Thanks Dazs!!
  • DAZS8's avatar
Yes it does work, been using since day one
Make sure put the events files in correct place
After any si Update you may have to re install in the new updated folders

Greetings I need some help. everything went as planned but I seem to hear 2 commentaries r 2 commentators. it doesn't tally well with the match flow. anyway I could solve that? or I have to add "events and sound" to the 1630 update folder as suggested by DAZ.
  • zaccachino's avatar
Is there a way to turn the crowd sounds down a tad? They're a little too loud and drown out the commentator sometimes.
  • Raja's avatar
Do u plan to provide update packs?
