Help with playerfaces

I know how to make playerfaces. I just need a bit of help regarding editing the pictures on paint.net. I've seen a few different facepacks where there's an actual border/shape outline. At the minute my pictures are just stretched to the normal canvas size. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks
