My second month in the league and things are going tight, after the Gil Vicente match, Olha is tied for 6th place along with Academica and Porto, while 2 points is the only difference between 2nd and 6th. Such is Liga Zon Sagres....

Our success however has yet to attract crowds, it's a bit depressing playing in a nearly empty Algarve stadium. Also, were having a very worrying injury crisis, as evidenced by the picture below:

Roumegous's torn hamstring will be a hard hit to us, while not the best at tackling, his pace and ability to read the game was crucial, even when he does heal, the injury made him much slower and less athletic.

However, let's get back on track

Nacional de Madeira 0-2 Olhanense
A convincing victory to say the least. Celestino(back strain) and Rui Duarte(broken ribs) were injured so we started with a less than desired lineup. This was compounded by Pele suffering a gashed leg in the opening minutes, adding to the injury list. Both sets of goalkeepers performed very well here, but Mirko Bigazzi was able to break the egg on the 65th minute. Young striker Diego Goncalves added another goal in the dying minutes.

Olhanense 2-3 Academica
A bummer of a loss, really since we thought we had the upper hand after goalkeeper Ricardo netted an 89th penalty, the team got complacent and conceded two goals in extra time. Roumegous had his first goal here, a far post header from a corner.

Portimonense 0-2 Olhanense
This is one of those games where had to win and duly delivered, the fans will be pleased with this derby victory. We peppered them with shots and while we lost out in possession, we had more(and better) chances and got away with the win. Sadly, this was the game Roumegous got injured, going off with a torn hamstring while chasing the ball.

Olhanense 1-0 Gil Vicente
Another Ricardo clean sheet, we pulled in a stunning defensive performance as Gil Vicente only ever hit 6 shots, all from distance. Ribeiro pulled a goal that placed third on the "Goal of the Month" ladder, dribbling past two opponents before powerfully shooting it past Gil Vicente's American keeper. The game became much more interesting in the final minutes, as evidenced in the highlights section below. Sadly, loan star Urreta had to go off with a thigh strain, keeping him out for at least 3 weeks.

Player of the Month

Joao Ribeiro:
http://desporto.imgs.sapo.pt/3/People/M38692.png
His direct running and top class workrate was key in the last 4 games, his two footed-ness helping, too, since he's also a fairly good crosser of the ball. Also found his way into team of the week
Great updates so far mate.
This story is looking very promising!

October

A very good month for us, we advanced in both the Taca de Portugal and Portugese League Cup, and steamrolled both Rio Ave and Arouca.

Rio Ave 0-4 Olhanense A very convincing win I should say, Goncalves bagged a brace, a header and a screamer from the edge of the penalty area. We might just had 41% possession, although it never mattered to us, the tandem of Rui Duarte and Diego Goncalves was simply brilliant. Our focus upon playing direct paid us well, a well executed long ball from Ricardo was able to be headed down, and only took 4 more passes for Rui Duarte to get a clear goalscoring chance. A clumsy challenge from Jeferson on Diego led to Ricardo scoring yet another penalty.

Estoril 2-3 Olhanense
Nerve racking match, really, we conceded two very sloppy goals and I was thankful Cica was able to not in the winner. This victory allows us to advance further in the cup. Can we win this? I'm not so sure, though.

Olhanense 6-0 Arouca
This is one of those matches where your strategy kicked in and your opponents play very much in the hands of our tactics, it's not surprising that we won by such a large margin. They elected to defend deep, not a great decision since goalkicks were often dangerous and all six goals were started by a simple long goal kick. Diego Goncalves and Rui Duarte smoked the Arouca defense, they were unsure who to mark and gave Diego all the freedom he needed to score a brace. Diego got himself a perfect hat-trick here, header, right foot and left foot.

Olhanense 2-0 Portimonense
With a match against Porto not very far, I chose to select a squad composed of mostly second-rate players with Celestino making a return from his injury. Sadly he reinjured himself again, this time an elbow injury. Seems like he's having to endure one very painful season!

Player of the Month

No one. Everybody deserved it.

Team of the Week

Highlights

That's all for now! If you want to inqure the tactic, yes I definitely can. Please beware that you'll never dominate possession, nor expect to play easy.
Good mounth ! Nice results !
Good luck

It was a good month for us, although we went down to earth with a 0-6 steamrolling from Porto followed three 1-0 victories rather than the 6-0 and 4-0 results beforehand. . Ricardo has kept 540 consecutive minutes not conceding a goal(Vid Belec was in goal vs Porto), which is great and shows how good the team is defensively against similar and slightly better opposition.

FC Porto 6-0 Olhanense
2x Kelvin (36, 57) (9.8)
Jackson Martinez (38)
Alex Sandro (68)
Kleber (72)
Silvestre Varela(90+1)

This was a loss we'd rather forget. We left the creative Porto midfielders too much time on the ball and they responded well. All goals came in a fairly expected fashion; direct balls over the top from the Porto midfield.

(TdP) Olhanense 1-0 Vit. de Guimaraes

Rui Duarte (20)
Jean Christophe Coubronne

This win was the first board expectation to be met, get past the 5th round of Taca de Portugal. A move to an individual man-marking system in the midfield turned out to be a very good move, the ball rarely went into our defensive third and kept Guimaraes to just 4 shots. A Coubronne cross was anticipated well by Rui Duarte, who lost his marker and hammered the shot into goal for the only goal of the match.

Olhanense 1-0 Vit. Setubal

Ednilson (8)
Carlos Servin (7.3)

We pressured them, took a lot of good chances but needed a sloppy Setubal own goal to get the W. Setubal's Paraguayan backup 'keeper performed excellently here, saving 5 clear chances on goal. Ednilson's own goal came when he headed the ball into his own net while defending a corner. Well.....

Olhanense 1-0 Vit. de Guimaraes

Diego (23)
Tibor Cica (7.9)

We went against Guimaraes once again, at home and duly delivered with a win. Once again, we hammered them on attack and an excellent goalkeeping display from Jamal Blackman kept the score 1-0. Ricardo performed very good, too, sweeping balls before they had the chance to become dangerous and crucially breaking apart a rare Guimaraes counter attack.

Player of the Month

It's a toss up between the tall CB duo of Kroldrup and Ricardo Fereira, one compliments the other very well and there is no clear victor here. The aerial dominance of the duo play a crucial part in our defense, preventing attacks before they start becoming dangerous.
A tough loss to Porto but a great month otherwise mate
Overall, a good month!

End of 2013

We did not end the year 2013 in the best of styles, two fairly convincing wins were overshadowed by a a loss and a three goal collapse where player errors played key. Maritimo though, is still 3 points away from us and 4th-5th place is still Europa League, which should be good enough.

Olhanense 1-0 Pacos de Ferreira

Joao Ribeiro (15)
Ricardo (35)
Massari (7.4)
Celestino (Bruised thigh)

A slow paced game where we dominated the possession-oriented Pacos de Ferreira on the break, hitting 25 shots, 15 of them on target, but our prolifigacy and a missed penalty meant the score stayed 1-0. P. Ferreira rarely looked dangerous, only having 4 shots and all of them came from a set piece situation. We did well here in keeping their possession in their own half, our man marking prevented them from ever playing the ball forward.

Estoril 1-4 Olhanense

Daniel Bessa (34) (8.8)
Diego Goncalves (45+4)
Rui Duarte (53)
Celestino (77)
Evandro
Gonzalo
Per Kroldrup (Dead leg)

We might only had 34% possession, but we delivered with a fairly convincing 4-1 win against fellow overachievers Estoril. Estoril had some very good chances, but their lack of pace meant that our defenders were able to play catch up and block the shot. Due to this, this was our last match played with a high defensive line, we will play a medium block from now on, especially with Per Kroldrup slowing down dramatically. Diego added in a goal to increase his goal tally to 10, while Daniel Bessa capitalised on Goncalo's error to tee up Rui Duarte for what was a fairly easy chance on goal. Celestino summed up the rout with a wonderfully executed free kick from just outside the box.

Maritimo 1-0 Olhanense

Danilo Dias (pen 90)
Patrick Bauer (7.5)
Rui Duarte (pen)
Per Kroldrup (knock)

A very cagey game that saw a fairly few chances on goal, Maritimo's decision to use their extremely small 90x60m pitch didn't help either. In the end, a fairly clumsy 90th minute tackle in the box from captain Rui Duarte left me fuming as we could have gotten a point and maintained a sizeable gap between us and 4th placed Maritimo. Despite this, we were pretty much correct tactically speaking, Fidelis rarely saw the ball and Maritimo was restricted to 4 shots and one of them was the penalty.

Braga 3-2 Olhanense (PLC)

Urreta (45)
Rui Duarte (58)
Nuno Andre Coelho (76)
Mirko Bigazzi (87)
Salvador Agya (90)
Willian (8.0)
Ricardo
Femi Balogun

This game was filled with mistakes throughout and while it seemed that we might get away with a win, we ended up in a 3 goal collapse where costly mistakes doomed us in an otherwise unimportant Portugese League Cup. Urreta capitalised on a mistake by Nuno Andre Coelho to open up the scoring, but calamitous mistakes from Mirko Bigazzi and Ricardo(who kicked the ball to Salvador Agya for his 90th minute goal) sealed our fate.

I have no idea on who to deserved this since nobody was playing well in a consistent basis this month
@k1rups: Tough loss yes, once again I endured another tough loss.
@AAN: Good month? Of course!

Olhanense in dire financial state

rtp.pt(English editorial)

Despite their 3rd place spot in the Liga Zon Sagres, above the likes of Sporting and Braga, Olhanense have yet to reap the benefits of their achievements, as the small club from Olhao are finding things difficult financially and have lost €1.5 million in just one half of a season. Insider sources have reported that the club has returned some paid loan players back to their respective clubs due to their high wages with Agon Mehmeti(€75k/month) labelled the most likely to leave. Olhanense are finding it difficult to fill their 30,000 capacity Estadio do Algarve, the average attendance being 4,000 fans despite ticket prices being very low. Cynics and pundits alike are speculating the possible departure of Jay-Jay Okocha from his managerial post at the end of the season especially if the club ends up not qualifying for Europe with bankruptcy not far away. Okocha has reportedly shown intrest in selling Jander for €600k, but at this time, only recently promoted Sport Recife are interested in him but have yet to make a decision whether to bid or not.

Winter Transfer Update

Just to let all of you know what's up in the winter transfer window, a quick update before the main January 2014 update. Players were signed, and many left, too, mainly due to the fact that the team is struggling financially and the team had many overpaid players on paid loans, so a compromise was to be had.

Players in:

Bought in as a free transfer midway through the first half of the season after a string of injury problems, he will replace the outgoing Pele and his low wage should do good. The ex Groningen player was once worth 3.8 million as a young man, but has been released and will play in matches where extra defensive security is needed.

I signed this Benfica reject with a mind of developing him, he got sent immediately to Orangina struggler Sp. Covilha, where he has managed to gain a starting spot already. My assistant suggested him to me, and it didn't take much for me to be convinced that this player might turn out to be a good player for me.

Got this AS Saint-Etienne reject on a free after scouting him and placing him on trial, he is 20 and I'm retraining him to become a good right winger and try to use his ability to dictate tempo from the wing, where his pace and dribbling may come into good use.

This player replaces Jeremie Roumegous, who after his knee injury, declined sharply and no longer the good player that performed really well in the 4 games he had pre-injury. The one thing for sure is that he is better than Vitor Bastos and should slot in as a 3rd choice CB.

Players out:

Agon Mehmeti(On loan from Palermo):

Didn't suit my tactics and his 75k monthly wage meant that he became a player that had to be returned back to his team.

Pele(On loan from AC Milan):

Made redundant by Femi Alijore who is on much lower wages than him, plays a similar role and is better at the role than him. The fact that he went straight to a Serie C club after this means that he simply isn't quality enough for my team.

Federico Dionisi(On loan from Livorno)

Recalled by his own team, never impressed during his stay.
Other than your finances you are looking very good. Ajilore does a good job I have used him before.
Nice to see a Portuguese League story. You're flying :)

Overall it's been a good month for us, aside from the slip against Atletico CP, where Celestino contrived to kick the ball into his own net that made it 2-2, despite Mirko Bigazzi scoring straight from kickoff after only 23 seconds. A park the bus win against Benfica and a late 2 goal comeback against Estoril and Nacional de Madeira summed up our month

Nacional de Madeira 2-3 Olhanense (TdP)

Mateus (6)
Diego (30, 77)
Urretaviscaya (51)
Diego (8.8)
Per Kroldrup (28)

We had a poor start to the game by conceding an early Mateus header, which was further exacerbated by a miscommunication between Kroldrup and Vid Belec, allowing Nacional de Madeira left winger Daniel Candelas's cross to go all the way into the net. A quick goal shortly after gave the team some hope. Daniel Bessa crossed in to Diego, who somehow managed to dribble it past Nacional Madeira's 19 year old keeper Rui Silva, whose inexperience showed throughout. The decision to swap Urreta and Joao Ribeiro to opposite wings turned out to be a really astute decision, as Urreta went on to score the equaliser from an excellent pass by Diego. The game was decided with a Paulo Regula breakaway cross that found the head of Diego, who headed it past the Nacional keeper to make it 3-2.

Olhanense 1-2 Braga

Paulo Vinicius (15)
Paulo Regula (30)
Luiz Alberto (pen 37)
Jean-Christophe Coubronne (37)
Luiz Carlos (90+1)
Paulo Vinicius (8.1)

Things didn't start well, as Braga CB Paulo Vinicius headed in a fairly lucky header from some range to open up the scoring. Paulo Regula got on the end of a Coubronne cross to even the scoring. The match though, was decided after ex-Olha player Salvador Agra was no match for Coubronne, and drew a penalty which Luiz Alberto executed with ease. This summed up the key battle of the match, the main battle came through our right/Braga left, as Coubronne and Salvador Agra were two of the more influential players in this match.

Atletico CP 2-2 Olhanense (PLC)

Mirko Bigazzi (1)
Anderson Costa (11)
Urreta (28)
Celestino (29)
Anderson Costa (8.3)
Marco Bicho (33)
Celestino (45+1)
Arthur Henrique (46)

We could have won this match but it was not to be, a disappointing result that caused quite a stir among Olha and Portugese fans alike. Mirko Bigazzi started brilliantly, scoring after only 23 seconds. Anderson Silva, though, was no match for the now departed Roumegous, as he skinned past the Frenchman on his way to a spectacular shot from range to even up the scoring.
Everyone would think that Urreta's equaliser off a set piece play after 28 minutes would seal the win, but Celestino contrived to head the ball into his own net, therefore cancelling the win altogether, as the rest of the game turned into a fruitless scrappy battle in midfield.

Olhanense 1-0 Benfica

Ricardo (18 pen)
Ezequiel Garay
Enzo Perez (67)
Nemanja Matic (87)
Ricardo (7.8)

A textbook example of a smash and grab park the bus strategy. We got the(fairly lucky) goal then sat deep for the rest of the game, getting only 34% ball possession but got the win after Garay clumsily took down Diego in the area following some good hold-up play by Diego. Ricardo was calm in taking his penalty, which proved the difference. The decision to tuck in the RB in and play 3 centre backs was an astute one, as the narrow Benfica attack struggled to deal with our incredibly narrow defence.

Olhanense 2-1 Estoril (PLC)

Seba (67)
Paulo Regula (75, 78)
Paulo Regula (8.5)
Goncalo (30)

I had to applaud my subs, Paulo Regula changed the game with two late goals after being subbed in, with sub Daniel Bessa playing a part in both goals. Seba's dribbling was no match for Willian, who was skinned en route to Seba's opener. But the team persevered, and got the win, which resulted in us getting a much needed €100,000.

Player of the Month

Has developed really well on the training ground and has shown in his performances that have outshined Rui Duarte, getting several goals, assists and key passes in the process.
