I mean I spend much more time preparing for matches, scouting and negotiating transfers than actually watching games. I usually choose "Extended" and I get 10 minutes of players travelling to the corner flag... and 5 of game action. Who can even be bothered with the results if you can't see the play developing... except for one player holding up the ball and eventually getting fouled.

And please don't tell me to go for "Full match" because it is as rubbish as the others and even more time-consuming. All in all, does anyone else feel that the matches aren't as rewarding as they should be? I reckon I miss the actual football in this game. :(
I have "Only commentary" and it suits me well. Of course I study the statistics before and after the match, check the stats during the match, replay goals and everything, but I believe the "graphical" part of the game is not realistic translation of numbers that actually shape the game and decide the outcome. Graphical part is not "real", it's merely an approximation of what's actually happening in game's engine, and as such, it can be deceiving. Fouls, that are calculated by the engine, are not always shown in the match - a player just stands there, some way off the opponent, and the foul happens. Another examples are goals of the week/month/year, where the replay sometimes hardly matches the description. In my opinion, graphics are pretty much just eye-candy, but can be still helpful, if you have the time and persistence to watch.
If you view the analysis of the game, such as where passes for certain players took place, their average position, I find that pretty useful in regarding to seeing their performance in terms of general play
only commentary of it takes to long
I may be imagining things, but I feel that my team is underperforming when I watch extended/key highlights. They hardly ever score, even against punching bag teams. Whereas with commentary only I usually get the result I expect. Also, I do agree that what you see is miles away from what it should look like based on team/individual instructions.
It sucks, especially if your PC is slow (as mine is) - sometimes it takes quite a while to get to the next match, only to see some flashing text. I guess hardcore players are used to it, seeing that older versions did not have 3D view.
That's a good point I haven't thought of, the connection between the match engine and the 3D graphics leads to some horrendous results.
Perhaps I should use the analysis tab more as it was suggested. It really is more useful than those highlights. For me it's a bit of give-and-take with the game in the end.

I used to use extended too but for the same reason you don't like it I changed it to key. The whole match engine is poor in this game so you're honestly wasting your time if you use anything other than key. The last FM game to have a good match engine was FM11 IMO. I would happily watch every match in extended and actually see how my team play. FM12 had a decent engine but as the series continued the match engine got worse.
