Maradona: “I’m Sorry”

Napoli manager Diego Maradona has today sensationally apologised for his cocaine addiction which he went through during the peak of his career. In an interview that was recently conducted with Sky Sports News and Sky News, the 53 year old, who won 91 caps for Argentina, scoring 34 goals, including the infamous ‘hand of god’ goal during the 1986 world cup, has apologised for his use of cocaine and has revealed all details on what he was going through and why he started taking the drug. The former Argentina international had allegedly begun using the class a drug in 1983, when the midfielder was under contract at Spanish side Barcelona, and didn’t fully come clean off the drug until 2006. Speaking for the first time about his addiction since he began it in his playing days, Maradona had this to say, “First of all, I would like to apologise to FIFA, for the disruption that I caused during the 1994 World Cup when I was tested positive for cocaine. I would also like to apologise to my team mates, for club and country during my playing time, and most importantly, I would like to apologise to my friends and family, because they are the people that I hurt most during this rough patch I was going through, but never the less, they were supportive of me all the way through it and I cannot thank them enough for their help”.

“I guess, that, when I moved to Barcelona, it was a new country, a new culture, so naturally you do things to try and adjust to your surroundings, but unfortunately, this was one of the worst choices that I have made in my life, and has got to be the only thing possible that would not help me adjust to a new culture. What actually got me into taking cocaine is a mystery to me, but I can honestly say that I deeply regret my actions and would go back and change everything if I could. After I got addicted to the drug, it was beginning to affect my playing ability on the field, which makes me think would my career have turned out a little different if I did not take the drug, but we will never know. It also affected my mental stability, people thought that I was starting to go mentally insane but what they didn’t know was that it was the cocaine that was affecting my mental state”.

“I managed to come clean in 2006, and the last time I touched drugs was in 2005, but it has also affected my health problems, I gained a lot of weight during my addiction, and also started to suffer heart problems which is why people thought I should not have come into the world of management with Argentina in 2008 due to my mixture of heart and weight problems, with them thinking it could lead to worse problems. I had a gastric bypass operation in 2005 for my weight, and then went on a 3 month liquid diet to try and drastically return to my normal weight. Rumours went round a couple of years ago, fake reports about my death which were quite upsetting really, but I’ve finally had the courage to come out and talk about this, so thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so, I’m glad I’ve been able to explain to the world, and I hope that what I’ve been through will make people think that i wasn’t going mentally insane back then”.

Maradona Begins Overhaul

Napoli manager Diego Maradona has today begun his overhaul of the club by confirming his new backroom staff members that he has brought in for the upcoming season, and believes that if the players will adopt to his methods and style of play, the new coaches could really help bring the best out of his squad.

46 year old Dutchman Rene Meulensteen has been brought in on a £10,250 per week, 4 year deal after he left Manchester United and has been labelled the key member of the backroom staff, being brought in as Maradona’s Assistant Manager. Meulensteen left The Red Devils when legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down from his managerial position so that the Scotsman could retire after almost 27 years at Old Trafford. Maradona sees him as the perfect Assistant Manager to be at his right-hand side and believes he could become the future manager of the club or lead another side to glory in Europe. Maradona has released a list (below) of his new staff members for the upcoming 13/14 season. Maradona has also released every single member of staff that was at the club before he took over at the helm and revealed he wants to have his own team of backroom staff if he is to be successful at the club.
