Who is Lothar?
Lothar Herbert Matthäus, born 21 March 1961 in Erlangen, West Germany, is a German football manager and former player. After captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, he was named European Footballer of the Year. In 1991, he was named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year, and remains the only German to have received the award.
He has played in five FIFA World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) more than any other outfield player, and holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a single player (25 games). He also won UEFA Euro 1980, and played in the 1984, 1988, and 2000 UEFA European Football Championships. In 1999, aged 38, he was again voted German Footballer of the Year, having previously won the award in 1990.
Matthäus is the most capped German player of all time, retiring with a total of 150 appearances (83 for West Germany) in 20 years, and 23 goals for the German national team. Matthäus is a member of the FIFA 100 – a list of 125 of the greatest living football players chosen by Pelé. Diego Maradona said about Matthäus
"he is the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him" in his book
Yo soy el Diego (I am Diego).
A versatile and complete player, Matthäus was renowned for his perceptive passing, positional sense, and well-timed tackling, as well as his explosive shot. During his career, he usually played as a box-to-box midfielder, although later in his career he played as a sweeper.
In July 2013 he signed a contract with Liverpool FC, England.
Matthäus's Story. How did i got the offer?
Home, Erlangen, July 2013. My life looks complete: a former football player and a retired coach, full of money and fame. I have all the time in the world to relax. I will stay in Erlangen for a while, here's where i fell best. That's a nice summer monday night and the bed looks now the best place to rest. Let's turn on the TV... What!? I was thinking that Liverpool's board have a lot of faith in Brendan Rodgers, and now, he is fired? C'mon, Sky Sports, i want to find out more details about this... Oh, here they are...
"After a conflict with Thomas Werner generated by club's philosophies, Brendan Rodger was fired by Liverpool FC days before starting the friendlies campaign.". That's not fair! Oh, God, what boss is that? Probably Brendan had other philosophies to put aside, i think mr. Werner is making a terrible mistake!
"Sky Sport breaking news: former international german star rumoured for Liverpool's takeover!"... What? I'll be glad to see a former mate of me in charge at Liverpool, i can't wait to see who he is! Ooooh, not the cellphone... I will go downstairs to see who's looking for me. Um, that's an english number! Probably he's my good friend Markus Babbel, he's a big Liverpool fan and he wants to discuss the Rodgers topic. I will take this...
"Hello, mr. Matthäus, sorry for disturbing you, i'm Thomas Werner, Liverpool FC's boss and i want you to come as soon as possible in England for some discussions. I had a word with your good friend Markus Babbel and he recommended you as a future Liverpool's head coach. I know that sounds crazy but i really trust Markus and i'm sure you can bring Liverpool to glory again.". I'm shocked. Oh my God... Yes, mr. Werner, i'm taking the plane tomorrow and i'll come to England. I am delighted to return to football at a club like Liverpool is...
So, that's how i totally changed my retired coach mind... I'm glad to manage a club like Liverpool and i'm sure that i can make great performance there.
Buying youngsters and taking the club to Europe. Will that be a great year for me?
Right after i signed the contract, Werner told me the philosophies of the club, philosophies which fired Rodgers:
"I expect you to play an attacking, speedy football and to sign youngsters. That's how we can ensure a solid future and i'm confident in bringing the team on top.". After hearing that, i couldn't believe that a manager like Rodgers didn't accepted these philosophies. I totally agreed with this politic and i'm sure i can bring to reality all these objectives.
