Lopetegui Resigns

-Outgoing Julen Lopetegui-

Julen Lopetegui has resigned from his position as Spain U-21 Head Coach. After winning the UEFA European U-21 Championship last summer this will be dissapointing news to the Spanish people, however, many say they could see it coming. Julen (aged 47) has expressed interested in plenty of club jobs and will have felt that this was the right time to leave his post.

Mendieta Hired

-New Spain U-21 manager Gaizka Mendieta-

The RFEF was quick to announce Julens replacement in ex-spanish international Gaizka Mendieta. After a playing career that has seen him play for Castellon, Valencia, Lazio, Barcelona, Middlesbrough and represent his country on 40 occasions he reveals that he is ready for the step-up into management. He has said that he is looking forward to working with the fantastic youth that Spain have produced.

Thoughts

"We have a good bunch of lads here, they are all determined and i'm sure we can be succesful and they can help this country continue being the best in the world". That's what I told the press and in a way it really is true, we have a fantastic team and if everyone feels determined. Everyone wants to play for Spain but only a select bunch do and that is what everyone on this team is working towards. A place in the Spanish senior team. I walked around watching my team train in the August sunshine and I knew that what I do at this job effects the future of Spanish football, if I fail then these players won't be given their shot at the big time, but watching them train made me feel that that should not happen. Given the ability of my squad made me very excited but as equally as nervous because I knew that if I didn't do my job well enough then I would know deep down that I would only have myself to blame.

Goalkeepers:

Defenders:

Midfielders:

Attackers:

In my first few days as Head Coach I have picked out a few 'Jems' that I figure I need to keep an eye on.

Gerard Deulofeu: Very likeable charector this boy, in a way he reminds me of a young Pedro. He has Flair and can take it past Full-Backs, I feel I may need to try and help him in what he does once he gets past his man though.

Alvaro Morata: Exceptional youth prospect, I cannot wait to see how he develops, he is a fantastic natural finisher and is all round a good Striker.

A few days ago I traveled to the Stade Gerland to watch Lyon v Nice and was disappointing not to see Borja in action.
Nice update and I am looking forward to this

The Game

2' A great passing move from the lads. Duelofeu cuts inside and hits the post, almost an early lead.

9' We should have scored. Another great passing move which ends with Jese putting in a cutting ball into Morata who misses a 1 on 1 with their keeper. Simply put, not good enough from Alvaro!

14' (0-1) WHAT A GOAL!!!! I'm jumping for joy as Koke smashes home a Free-Kick from just outside of the box, their keeper just stood and watched it go in. The 4th official is telling me to calm down so I just laughed and waved him off, the first goal and hopefully many more to come.

21' (0-2) NUMBER 2!!! Brilliant goal from Pardo, another great goal. Fantastic passing move again by the lads and it fell so sweetly to Ruben and he smashed it from outside the box into the top corner, woo.

26' Great corner wipped in by Gerard, and Muniesa just heads it wide of the post. Still passing
around fantasticaly and it seems these Serbians just can't get the ball of us.

28' (0-3) OH IT'S NUMBER 3!!! Passing again is key in the build up, we passed it round just outside the box and Alberto runs wide and collects a fantasticaly weighted Deuofeu ball, he hits it and the keeper parries it straight into the path of Alvaro who just slots it into the net, what a first game!

30' Another fantastic move by the lads, passing it around the Midfield and Vadillo decides to take a shot from just outside the box, the keeper pushes it over and from the corner it gets scrambled around and out of the box to Pardo who shoots just over.

33' First real chance for Serbia, they hit it upfield to Kadrijaj who puts in a decent ball to Kostic who, thankfully, does not have his shooting boots on and puts it well wide.

HT: As the ref blows for half-time I entered the Changing Room and pat each of them on the back. "What a fantastic half, these Balkans don't stand a chance! Just keep doing what your doing and we can win this very comfortably". As I walked out I feel a tap on my shoulder and I turn round to see Ruben Pardo looking uncomfortably at me, he tells me that his ankle doesn't feel to good and that he could do with not playing the second half. This is gutting news as he is my main playmaker and he had been playing superbly but I feel that I needed to go with it, being my first game. I now had a decision to make, who to replace Ruben with. I had two good replacements on the bench in Jose Campana and Sergi Roberto but I felt that this was a game that was there to be attacked and I felt that Sergi was a lot more attacking minded than Jose.

48' A chance for us to go further out in front, Deulofeu picks up the ball and gives it straight to Alberto which I found weird, usually Gerard likes to dwell on the ball and take on a few players before he gives it to someone else, as I recalled he was limping out of the changing room but I thought at the time it was a slight knock, I'm going to have to take him off but not right now. Anyway, Alberto picks up the ball and gives it to Roberto who starts off another good passing move wich ends up at Vadillo who shoots it straight at their keeper.

50' WOW what a miss, Jese hang your head in shame my son. A fantastic run by Vadillo ends with him crossing it into a crowded penalty box and the ball gets spewed out to Jese, and frankly, I didn't think anybody could kick it any higher than he did, it almost went into orbit! I am going to have to bring Gerard off now, Saul is going to have to come on, hopefully he doesn't get blinded by god.

75' Ooooo, I think nerves may have set in there. Saul picks up the ball and takes it past all their defenders and hits it straight at their keeper, I honestly don't think he had a clue what he was doing! Anyway the resulting corner is taken by Saul and goes straight out for a goal kick, he can take players on but he is woeful at corners I guess.

79' Great link up play between Roberto and Koke, after 3 or 4 passes Koke puts the ball through to Jese who puts it just over, we can't seem to hit the target anymore! Still dominating possesion and passing it round very well though.
83' Sergi Roberto puts it just wide, I can't say anything about this chance though as I was busy changing into shorts, lesson one: we can pass well, Lesson two: It can be hot in Serbia.

87' Passing move again creates time for Roberto to dwell on the ball and Vadillo makes a run to his right. Roberto puts in a fantastic ball through and Vadillo hits a bending shot that is very well saved by their keeper. Saul puts in yet another woeful corner...

FT: What a first game! 3-0 in Serbia is a great result no matter who you are! I walked over to shake hands with Radovan Ćurčić who stared at me before brushing past me and storming down the tunnel. He is not a happy bunny. But for me, I am delighted and in the Changing Rooms I make that known to the lads telling them what a very nice victory it was with passion in my voice and that lads just looked really pleased and I hope they keep showing what they shown out their today.

Thoughts

The bus drive to the airport wasn't easy, we were warned before the game of the hostality of the Serbians if they get beat and we beat them with ease. There were people chanting racist slurs running alongside the bus and some kid in a balaclava chucked a brick threw a window and it almost hit Marc Muniesa on the head, poor lad, it must of gave him a heart-attack!

Nice victory but damn those fans were jackasses
Yes! A Zap story, will try and follow this time :P
Spain U-21 v Hungary U-21

Line Ups

The Game

6' Hungary get a soft free-kick and put it over, not as good a start as in Serbia but we should get going soon enough.

14' Still going slowly but passing it around and Jese picks it up and runs down the wing with it, he cuts inside and hits it powerfully straight at their keeper.

16' Really good passing move from the lads, in and out the box. Alberto makes a run in and collects the ball but puts his shot well wide. We're getting into the game a lot more now.

18' Oh Morata really? He gets the ball literally yards outside of the box and hits it straight at the keeper! We should be 2-0 up by now, this is not good enough!

33' (1-0) FINALLY!! After a good corner by Isco and a scramble round the penalty spot, Muniesa keeps his cool to tap it past the keeper who was completly lost in the sea of players. He seems to of shaken of the stir he got on the bus in Serbia alright then, good lad.

37' (2-0) OH YES! The real Alvaro Morata is back! A brilliant passing move leads to Vadillo wipping a fierce low cross and Alvaro pounces on it to make it 2! After a poor start to the game hopefully this can help him push on.

42' (3-0) NUMBER 3! Hungary are completly parking the bus now! We passed it round patiently until Vadillo found a gap and exploited it, he hit a cracker into the top corner but their keeper did get a hand on it to help it in, he maybe should have saved that one.

HT: I'm not going to hold back, we were poor in the first 10 minutes but we more than made up for it in the rest of the half, as I walk into the changing rooms I have mixed emotions but when I see the lads all joking around and laughing I realise that I can only be positive. I can't pick wrong in being 3-0 up at half time after all and so I simply say to not get complacent. Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have done that. Koke and Roberto took on the team talks desired effect and walked out looking more focused but the rest seemed to looking confused and I got a few glares of Isco of which I am not happy about if I am honest. Anyway hopefully that doesn't change anything, it shouldn't, Hungary have been dreadful.

55' We wait until 10 minutes into the Second Half to get a real chance. A good passing move again pushes Isco out wide, Vadillo swaps and takes the ball off Isco as he travels inside and takes a shot but their keeper saves it.

63' Jese is starting to look uninterested. I don't know what this is about as he is not usually like this but I decide to not take the risk, and so I put Isco out wide and bring on Moi Gomez to play in the middle.

69' Hungary get a chance, Szenes runs through the defence and weaves some space but his shot is easily saved by Ortola. We need to tighten up a bit and not let this clean sheet slip!

80' Passing around the midfield and Morata makes a darting run through the defence, as soon as he gets given the ball he shoots from a distance and, to be fair to him, it didn't go that far over, it had some power aswell.

FT: Good solid win, not much to say about this. In a game were we were expected to win comfortably, we won comfortably. So this is what I told the lads after the game and they all seemed to take it pretty well.
