Sami Hyppia Steps Down
In news that shocks the German Footballing World, former Bayer Leverkusen manager Sami Hyppia has stepped down, leaving the the Bayer Leverkusen managerial spot vacant. Hyppia, 40, who led Bayer Leverkusen to a 3rd place finish last season, has shocked many with his decision to leave one of Germany’s most talented teams. Hyppia however, told the press that his decision to leave boiled down to the fact that he thought winning a trophy against the big 2, referring to Bayer Munich and Borussia Dortmund, was near impossible. Hyppia has a point, there were 31 points between Leverkusen and 1st placed Bayer Munich at the end of the Bundesliga season last year, but the majority of fans think Leverkusen can overtake a Borrusia Dortmund side without starlet Mario Gotze, and are angered by Hyppia's decision to leave at such a crucial point in the club's history. Many are interested in gaining the services of the Finnish manager, Tottenham Hotspurs, who currently have an interim manager in Tim Sherwood, look to be the main suitors for Hyppia. But for Leverkusen fans, the biggest question is who will be the manager of their club coming into a crucial 2013-2014 campaign. Gus Hiddnik and Rafa Benitez are the favorites for the job, but anything can happen at this stage for Leverkusen. Bayer Leverkusen have plenty of talented stars, such as Stefan Kiessling, who led the Bundesliga with 25 goals and Sidney Sam, who finished last season with 5 goals. Those two especially will have to step it up for Leverkusen if they want to break the top 2 this year, and perhaps go deep in the Champions League.
