Appearance fees

Once again, I apologize if the answer to this is obvious.

What constitutes an appearance fee? Does a player have to start on the first team when a game begins? Or does he get credited for an appearance if he is brought on as a substitute later in the game?

Reason I'm asking is that I signed a young player in hopes of stashing him on my reserve team for at least one season for him to train. He isn't quite good enough to supplant any of my starters, but I'd rather keep him on reserves than potentially pay him his appearance fee for only one half of football at most.

I think its as it says, an 'appearance' fee. If he shows up at any time in the game he gets his appearance fee.
