Burton Albion V Cheltenham Town

On a hot and humid day at Whaddon road, we travelled down to Cheltenham, to play our first competitive match this season. I was very excited, it was finally the start of the league 2 season and the fans were electric ahead of the game. The sides were named and we were very excited to get our league campaign going, but before I tell you about the match, here's the teams line-up's for todays game.

We kicked off and I was quite nervous, it was a big game, it wasn't just a friendly anymore, it was a league 2 game. You may think league 2 doesn't have much prestige, but it does. To us, league 2 has a lot of prestige. The game didn't start very well, it was just a midfield battle, up until the 26th minute when Damien McCrory misplaced a pass, as Terry Gornell latched onto it and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. I grew worried, we were 1-0 down and weren't creating chances, there wasn't a chance we would equalise if we didn't create something soon! When the whistle blew for half time, all I could do was feel disappointed at that moment. I told the players that they needed to book their ideas up quickly, because the performance so far was poor and very sub standard.

The play was resumed for the second half and we passed the ball around quickly, maybe this was some sign of confidence? Maybe the team talk was working already? I just had to wait. The players were gaining momentum and I could sense there was a goal coming. We were finally getting shots away and troubling the keeper, unlike the first half, we were showing signs of life. Suddenly, McCrory played a beautiful for Weir to chase, which he got onto, before playing a lovely ball into the path of none other than Adam McGurk, who tapped home the goal, from about 8 yards out. I jumped up into the air and punch the sky with triumph, 'Cmon! We can win this now,' I shouted towards the players.

The goal had sparked us into another gear, both Lopez and McGurk came close to scoring for us very late on into the match, but we failed to score and the game ended up finishing 1-1. I was pleased with the second half performance, I couldn't really of said to any of the players, 'Oh that was a poor period of play in the second half, you need to improve.'

'till next time,
Manager of Burton Albion, Chloe

Burton Albion vs Blackburn Rovers

Today was the first round of the 'Capital One cup' where we were to face Championship side, Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn were a good side and I knew they were going to be difficult to beat, they are in the Championship after all. In addition to this, it was at Ewood Park, a great stadium, a stadium where once Blackburn lifted the trophy in. I didn't expect too much from us, I don't think you can expect to beat Blackburn when you're a League 2 side to be honest.

We named the side and the players were all ready to take to the field and get ready to give a good preformance, so I hoped anyway. Blackburn named a very much reserve side, but did feature some first team players. Here are the teams.

We had a decent crowd with us today, hopefully they could help the players push on a gear and potentially win us the game. The game kicked off and the fans already were singing. Chanting and singing their praises. However Blackburn started brightly and scored just 8 minutes in, as Rudy Gestede, who blasted the ball past the helpless 'keeper, Dean Lyness. That's where the romp started... first Tom Cairney, just 3 minutes later made it 2-0, before Jordan Rhodes managed to scored a double in the matter of 6 minutes. However, we had our moment, as Rudy Gestede scored another goal, but at the wrong end, after a corner was whipped in and the ball took a wicked deflection off him. At half time it was Blackburn 4-1 Burton. I was not impressed and I decided to tell my assistant to take the team talk, I couldn't bare see the players at the moment, they were playing awfully.

The second half was a different story however. The players shown life and started to show some chemistry with each other, Craig Conway and Jordan Rhodes scored late on, but we took the positives from that second half display. We went out, losing 6-1, but we needed to look to the second half display and look to the game against Rochdale on Saturday. We wanted to continue our league campaign in success. If we want to do that, we need to look ahead of today and try to forget about it... we just need to play our best... time to forget about this game and move on...
'till next time

That would have been funny, had it been at home to Accrington Stanley.
