Burton Albion V Cheltenham Town
We kicked off and I was quite nervous, it was a big game, it wasn't just a friendly anymore, it was a league 2 game. You may think league 2 doesn't have much prestige, but it does. To us, league 2 has a lot of prestige. The game didn't start very well, it was just a midfield battle, up until the 26th minute when Damien McCrory misplaced a pass, as Terry Gornell latched onto it and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. I grew worried, we were 1-0 down and weren't creating chances, there wasn't a chance we would equalise if we didn't create something soon! When the whistle blew for half time, all I could do was feel disappointed at that moment. I told the players that they needed to book their ideas up quickly, because the performance so far was poor and very sub standard.
The play was resumed for the second half and we passed the ball around quickly, maybe this was some sign of confidence? Maybe the team talk was working already? I just had to wait. The players were gaining momentum and I could sense there was a goal coming. We were finally getting shots away and troubling the keeper, unlike the first half, we were showing signs of life. Suddenly, McCrory played a beautiful for Weir to chase, which he got onto, before playing a lovely ball into the path of none other than Adam McGurk, who tapped home the goal, from about 8 yards out. I jumped up into the air and punch the sky with triumph, 'Cmon! We can win this now,' I shouted towards the players.
The goal had sparked us into another gear, both Lopez and McGurk came close to scoring for us very late on into the match, but we failed to score and the game ended up finishing 1-1. I was pleased with the second half performance, I couldn't really of said to any of the players, 'Oh that was a poor period of play in the second half, you need to improve.'
'till next time,
Manager of Burton Albion, Chloe
