I have used genie scout for the first time this year and although I think it is very useful, I do have issues with it and I have not been able to find any answers on the internet.

My problem is this, I am playing as Crewe and they have some good prospects obviously. In the game Max Clayton and Ryan Colclough show as having potential to be good prem players but the genie scout ratings do not seem to even think they will be good championship players.

What I want is some tips on how you use genie scout and which ratings you look out for when looking for good prospects. Is in Potential ability? or best potential rating? Or best potential for a particular role? (I currently go off the latter)

Any help or tips on using genie scout would be appreciated.
I actually need to know this my self, i have used this for a few years but i now fine the best ability does not seem to be as good as the best rating (in lower leagues)
however in top divisions i find ability is better than rating ??? so i'm just a confused as you.

good question and i hope some one answers soon
There are quite a few topics here on the subject. And when it comes to Genie Scout, there's no other place to search really :)

Rating is more important than ability for me. Ability is just an indication of how a player can develop, while rating is how good a player really can perform.

Current ability (CA) means his attributes are the ones you see, while potential ability (PA) gives you an idea how much he can improve. The more difference between CA and PA, the more increase in attributes when he reaches his PA (if he manages to reach that - not all of them do).

While Genie's rating is not absolute, I personally use it as a guide. Different attributes have been given more or less weight in the calculation according to what the author (Eugene) thinks is appropriate. But normally the scout ratings in-game should more or less agree with Genie's rating. For example, if GS gave a best potential rating (PR) of higher than 75% your in-game scouts would probably give a potential rating of 4 stars or more, and the same applies to current rating.

Note that the potential rating in GS can change. If you sign a defender who has a very poor marking attribute, his potential rating in GS would be lower. But if you concentrate his training on marking, causing a dramatic rise in this attribute, then his potential rating will increase.

The best players will be those with high rating AND high ability! But rating is more important because it's directly related with how good a player is based on key attributes for his position.

MY ADVICE
When you open a player's profile in GS, use the "show potential attributes" option to see a projected growth which is roughly a reliable way to know if a good prospect is likely to blossom.

Also be sure to check the hidden attributes of "Consistency" and "Important Matches", as they make a big difference.
