FIRST DAY AT FULHAM
I am delighted to be in charge of this brilliant football club. I have had a brilliant first day here, meeting the players, setting up my office, chatting to my fellow staff, and doing my first training session here at Fulham.
I was nervous in the morning. Actually, that's a massive understatement. I was terrified of what would happen - what if I said something wrong, that got the players or staff against me? What if I wasn't good enough to manage a football club of this level? But the nerves were completely overwhelmed by how excited I was. I couldn't wait to start my first day, to meet my players and staff, to get started training. I thought to myself: "You've worked as a coach for years at Manchester United, surely you can use the skills you learnt into managment?" So I grabbed my keys, walked out the door, and slowly walked up to the car. "This is it" I whispered to myself.
I arrived at the training ground. Nervously, I slowly went out of my car and walked up to the office. In front of me was Shahid Khan, the owner of Fulham. "Rene, welcome!" "We have organized a meeting with your staff and players, please be ready by 9:00. For now, you can go to your office and set things up." Good start. So I went into my office, not doing much for the half an hour I was waiting for, apart from sitting down. So it was 8:55, and I quickly grabbed my coat, and rushed out of the room.
"Welcome to Fulham! I'm Tomas, your assistant manager." "Nice to meet you" I responded, trying to be careful. The meeting went on with many easy-to-answer questions, so that was a good start for me. I now had to meet the players for the first time. I walked out of Tomas' office, and onto the training ground.
"Hello guys, I would like to introduce myself to you all as the new manager of Fulham." "Welcome, boss." "This season, I believe that we can all finish in the mid-table range, so let's try and get more." That was met by a good response, although I could sense that some of the team thought that maybe it could be harder to finish in the mid-table then I believed. "Come on lads, let's do this" responded Brede Hangeland. "That's the attitude I want here. Well, let's get started with the training."
The day went on quite easily from there. I continued with my training session, which I feel the players enjoyed. Then, it was 1:00 time for lunch. We have a great group in charge of making the lunch, which is certainly better than some I have eaten elsewhere in my career. The atmosphere around the team seemed good, with the team seeming to have a good time with each other. I sat down with the staff, and I was happy with the day so far. Nothing had gone wrong, and quite a lot had gone right.
So after an afternoon of training, it was over at 4:30. After a succesful day, I went back into the office and packed up my stuff, put my coat on and walked out of the office. After this good start, hopefully I can keep it up and move Fulham into a better situation. "Nice work, Rene" I said to myself.
