Ajax in injury blow
Ajax captain Siem de Jong has confirmed that he injured himself in training yesterday (September 5th) and will be out for 2 months with a broken foot, leaving De Godenzonen with a bit of a dilemma as they cannot sign a temporary replacement and the only two strikers they have are on loan Bojan, who is currently used as a winger, and Kolbeinn Sigporsson.
The 24 year old took to Twitter to confirm the news, saying
"Well, I'm spending the next two months in the stands... only gone and broken my foot -.-". De Jong was enjoying a good start to the season with Ajax, who currently sit in 2nd place in the league. The Dutch striker picked up the Eredivisie Player of the Month along with Viktor Fischer who picked up Eredivisie Young Player of the Month.
The news will come as a hard blow to Frank de Boer, who has his heart set on Ajax becoming the invincibles this season, but with de Jong out for two months of this season, this could be a hard thing to accomplish. Also, de Boer has spoken about how he wants to reach the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, where the groups are set to be drawn on September 8th. The striker will miss most of these games and it could cost De Godenzonen their place in the round of 16.
Speaking of the injury, Frank de Boer said
"Of course it's sad when anybody is injured, but the Eredivisie Player of the Month last month has been injured, and will be out for around two months. He will be a huge loss to our first team for those two months, but all we can do now is wish him a speedy recovery from what is a very unfortunate injury."
SC Heerenveen currently take the top spot in the league, despite Ajax demolishing Vitesse and FC Utrecht 6-0 and 3-1 respectively. Ajax will face Heerenveen this month and the match could be crucial in both team's fight for not only a European place, but the title as well.
