So far I have struggled to stick with a save so hopefully I can stick with this one as it will be more personalised.

Frustrating times (October-December)

Having only Sunday League experience doesn’t give you many opportunities in the managerial job market. Until October I had found no jobs which I had any chance of getting but the job opening at Brackley changed that. I met with their chairman Mr Oliver who welcomed me to their ground of St James’ Park which is surrounded by small terraced houses. Ultimately we couldn’t agree, the suggestion of me taking a club from 21st to 6th while cutting the wage budget of squad was ultimately prohibitive. They chose to hire Beck as their manager instead and it was off to Farnborough where I would have a chance to work with players such as Pele and Maradona (they renamed the players as part of a sponsorship deal). The Paddy Power Stadium is situated conveniently close to the M3 meaning that I easily reached it however despite only detailing a mid-table finish in the job advert they now demanded that I reach the play-offs and I felt that I could not achieve this so withdrew my application. I came to Guiseley next but again had problems and I was beginning to give up on my dreams.

Sight of the promised land (January)

For weeks since the Guiseley I had been failing to attract any more interviews but eventually I got one. The Dover post recently came up for grabs after a poor streak of results however the club stood only about 5 points off the play-off spots which was the clubs aim for the season. 4 days after my original application I got a call from the Chairman asking me to meet him at King Street in Dover town centre. This interview was different to any other I had been on he showed me around Dover taking me up to the castle and to see the magnificence of the white cliffs explaining the importance of the club to the region. We settled in a restaurant in the town centre where the formal part of the meeting where we agreed on almost every issue included the clubs aims. The budget for once was not an issue and we parted on very good terms however the club decided to take a different path and Paul Buckle was hired as manager.

Eventually a job (February-May)

After the Dover interview there were no job offers. Nobody in the Non-League got fired for 3 months and when I applied at teams such as Brentford I didn’t even get the courtesy of an interview. I was getting tired, the stress began to make me grow older and I snapped at the chance of a promotion in my engineering job. However in May this was all to change, the season was over and now managers who had not achieved promotion were being fired. I managed to get an interview at a small non-league club. I met the chairman outside the ground and we quickly got down to business agreeing wage and transfer budgets and expectations for next year. Later I got confirmation that I’d got the job at…

The Sandgrounders announce Taylor as new manager

Southport have had a disappointing season this year and were relegated in 23rd place despite some stronger form towards the end of the season. However they sacked their manager and now the hunt for the new one has concluded with Taylor.

Mark Taylor was born in Newcastle in 1987 and has been linked with many jobs this year such as the one at Dover. He has only ever played Sunday League football however Southport have seen fit to make him their new manager.

There have been minor fan protests at the club regarding the clubs lack of ambition to get back into the football league where many fans feel they belong, these were made larger due to the relegation of the club to the Skrill North.

We spoke to several Southport fans.
Fan No.1: ‘I have supported this club for 40 years but I haven’t seen a worse decision from the club.’
Fan No.2: ‘I believe that we must give Mark a chance but we should have chosen someone local.’
Fan No.3: ‘There is a reason why he’s been appointed and we should respect that.’

PO: The interview will commence, you may now ask any questions you wish.
NM: Hello it’s Sam Elliot from the Non-League Paper. Many Southport fans have reacted by saying you’re too inexperienced to lead them to glory. What is your opinion to this?
MT: Yeah, well everybody starts off with no managerial experience and even though I wasn’t the best footballer I can still achieve. Who had heard of Jose Mourinho before his management career?
LM: Yeah it’s James Dawson from the Liverpool Echo, What are your aims for this season.
MT: Well unfortunately it appears that a lot of the players want to leave so I will have to rebuild, however a promotion push is certainly what we are all aiming for.
LM: It is Daniel Jobson from the Southport Visiter, Martin what funds will you be giving Mark this year.
MF: I don’t wish to disclose that information but there will be a transfer budget.
PO: Does anyone have any more questions?
NM: Yes, Thomas Proudfoot from the Non-League Daily. Will you purely focus on the league?
MT: Of course the league must be priority but what is football without the magic of the cup. I will certainly look to reach the FA Cup 1st Round Proper.
