Willems: World Cup Spot Is An Honour

PSV's 20 year old left-back Jetro Willems has toda spoken about representing his country on the World's biggest stage. Speaking after his side's 3-0 defeat of Japan, in which he played a pivotal role at left-back, starting attacks from deep inside his own half, and covering a total of 11.4km, the most of any dutch player all game, Willems spoke of his deep pride at playing his part this World Cup.

Jetro Willems, PSV:
"It's an absolute honour to be chosen to represent my country at this level: There are some quality players in the camp, and i'm learning every single day. This victory today will hopefully steady our nerves for the rest of the competition, and I'm hoping to come home a better player."

Jetro also spoke about his surprise that PSV team-mate and good friend Memphis Depay hadn't been included in the squad.

"It was strange, to see my name on that teamsheet, and not Memphis; he's been outstanding this season, and it's baffling why he wasn't included. But of course, the manager has his reasons, and i'm sure we'll see why Memphis wasn't given a spot on the plan in due course."

Depay, first choice winger at Phillips Stadion, made 14 appearances for PSV last season in the league, due to Young's squad rotation system, but in that time, he scored 5 times, made 7 assists, and was voted Man of the Match twice, with an average opta rating of 7.39, in contrast to Bayern winger Arjen Robben, who only made 9 appearances, scoring 3 times, with 2 assists and no Man of the Match awards, and an opta rating of 6.99.

Many pundits are as surprised as Willems at Depay's absence at this World Cup, but this time, Experience wins over quality, it seems.

Young: We Must Keep Improving

Champions: PSV Lifted The Eredivisie Title This Season

His side may have just been crowned champions of Holland for the 22nd time, but manager Tony Young has called on his players to stay focussed ahead of the coming season. With the World Cup just around the corner, some of PSV's players will be travelling to Brazil to spectate, while others will be there to take part. Regardless, Young knows that the tournament will eat into his preparation time ahead of the new season, and is keen to see his players remain on top form.

"Obviously the World Cup is a big deal, and it's great that we've got players going to show what they can do on the biggest stage of all, but I've already warned them: no excessive partying (unless they're World Champions), and everyone to be back here 2 weeks after the tournament ends: that still gives us plenty time to prepare, and I can look at who needs a longer break at that point. We need to be at the top of our game from the very outset this season, if we're to defend our crown."

PSV Sign Van Der Wiel From PSG

Moving On: Van Der Wiel On The Ball Against Real Madrid Last Season

PSV Manager Tony Young has today announced the club's first new signing of the season: Gregory van der Wiel made the switch from Paris to Eindhoven, in a deal rumoured to be worth around £3.9m; a significant chunk of the Englishman's transfer budget for the season.

The 26-year old Dutch right back featured 17 times for PSG last season, scoring once and providing 3 assists, before a rib injury cut his season short. whoscored.com gave him an average rating of 7.13 for the games he featured in, putting his average just below new team-mate Joshua Brenet, who averaged a 7.35 off of 16 appearances last season.

van der Wiel is thought to have been brought in to shore up what was previously a slightly leaky defence, and provide another attacking outlet for PSV, as he uses his pace to support the wingers. The lure of Champions League football is what attracted him to PSV, he says, after he was ousted from the PSG first team by a combination of injury and Christophe Jallet.

"Of course, it was saddening to be pushed out of that first-team position last season, but injuries were unfortunate, and now I am concentrated entirely on PSV, and making this season just as successful as last season for the club."

Rumour has it that van der Wiel may not be the only addition from France this season, with 20 year old Lucas Digne apparently unsettled at PSG as well.

PSV Rounded off their preseason last week, ahead of the Dutch Supercup game against AZ Alkmaar on July 26th. Overall, Manager Tony Young said he had been "impressed by the players" in the pre-season matches, but that regardless, "much work still needs to be done" to ensure the side are competitive at the top of the table this coming season.

Fresh off the back of a quarter-final finish at the World Cup, dutch star Gregory van der Wiel has settled quickly after his move from PSG, clocking an average rating of 7.30 (via whoscored.com) during the 3 pre-season games he started.

Overall, the squad looks to be in good shape ahead of the new season, with Michy Batshuayo showing no signs of last season's form slipping, netting 6 goals in 3 pre-season appearances, with an average rating of 7.80.

Below, we take a look at the games that formed pre-season, and analyse the best and worst bits

PSV 3-2 FC Barcelona

When Barcelona came to visit, many thought PSV would be on the wrong end of a cricket scoreline, but a slightly under-strength Boeren side rose to the challenge of the Spanish Champions, and displayed a backbone that even Jose Mourinho would be proud of. Lionel Messi was contained by Santiago Arias on the right side of defence, and while Neymar caused some problems for Alexander Buttner on the left, the attacking threat was mostly taken care of. In a performance which bodes well for the club's Champions League campaign, the PSV supporters can be delighted with their side.

Brought back to earth with a bump, PSV's fans will be angered that their team didn't settle from the Barcelona victory to tear Utrecht to shreds, but all credit for that must go to the Utrecht defence; solid on the ball, and marking Bakkali and Jozefzoon out of the game, they ensured that Depay was left isolated in the middle of the pitch, and with his only outlet quite often Jeffrey Bruma, Depay was left frustrated. However, the passing play which PSV displayed in the first half was encouraging

A complete turnaround from the Utrecht game, as PSV displayed a terrifying attacking edge to destroy their opponents in an 11 goal thriller. There's no words to describe Batshuayi's performance, as he netted 6 times to delight the fans and his manager, and strike terror into the hearts of Eredivisie teams ahead of the new season.

PSV 2014 Transfer Roundup

With the finalisation of Georginio Wijnaldum's move to Liverpool, as a part-exhange for spanish Youngster Suso, Tony Young has declared his club's transfer business over. And with the strength in depth being brought in, that's hardly surprising.

As we have already reported, the first signing of the summer was PSG right-back Gregory van der Wiel, who has quickly established himself as a fan favourite, with strong performances during pre-season, and a cheeky chappy attitude for the fans.

His arrival was quickly followed by that of Vinnie Vermeer, a 19 year old central midfielder, brought in from affiliated club FC Eindhoven, where he had spent 3 seasons, making 20 appearances in total. Vermeer looks to have a bright future ahead of him, and is a well-balanced player.

AS Cannes' Jonathan Isambart was the next to arrive; the 21 year old frenchman is seen as backup for the midfield, and still has some developing to do, with potential to overtake Bacuna as number one backup, although Mario Pugliese will also be fighting for that honour.

Felipe Guiterrez, who missed out on the World Cup with Chile, was the big signing of the window, arriving for just shy of £10m from league rivals FC Twente. The Chilean's technique and passing ability caused PSV some problems last season, and Tony Young was obviously impressed, using the Lure of Champions League football to get his man.

Sergi Roberto, now 22, was once touted as Barcelona's next superstar. However, despite comparisons to Xavi and Busquets, the youngster from Reus never quite hit top gear, and Young was only too happy to save him from the obscurity of the bench, bringing him to Phillips Stadion with a promise of kick-starting his career.

And finally, Suso. Liverpool had been chasing PSV Captain Wijnaldum for over half a season, and Tony Young saw his opportunity to bring the young Spaniard's asking price down, offering his Captain as part of a swap deal for the youngster from Cadiz. The 20 year old's passing and speed are two of his key attributes, and working with players like Depay and Batshuayi will only improve his game.

The Eredivisie campaign started poorly for reigning champions PSV, as they stumbled to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of SC Cambuur, as new right-back Gregory van der Wiel suffered an injury after just 20 minutes, which looks to keep him out for about two weeks. Cambuur capitalized on the weaknness in the PSV defence to take a 1-0 victory, and stun the PSV support. Tom van Weert was Cambuur's standout performer, scoring on 67 minutes to seal the win, and causing a constant problem down the left flank.

Against recently promoted FC Dordecht, PSV bounced back in style. Michy Batshuayi showed exactly why he was the club's top scorer last season, as he lifted the ball over te Loeke in the Dordecht goal to put his side ahead after just 7 minutes. Karim Rekik, who extended his loan from Manchester City at the start of the week, doubled the PSV lead, heading home from Suso's corner after 11 minutes. Dordecht were on the ropes, and rash tackles were flying left right and center, but that didn't phase PSV, as Zakaria Bakkali made it 3-0 with a sublime volley from the edge of the box after just 24 minutes.

Wout Weghorst put Dordecht back in with the slimmest of shouts just before half-time with a well timed daisy cutter which caught Timo Horn flat-footed in the PSV goal. At half time though, Boeren were well ahead, and looking comfortable; Adam Maher, who was wearing the captain's armband after the departure of Wijnaldum, was inspirational in midfield, harrying the opposition and his passing was nothing short of sublime, and he got his reward for a fine performance after 80 minutes, when he turned on a sixpence to fire home and make it 4-1 to PSV at full time.

Captain Fantastic: Maher Was An Inspiration In Midfield

Against Groningen, lasst season's surprise package, Florian Jozefzoon, scored within 2 minutes, with a gorgeous volley from the edge of the box which delighted the fans behind the Groningen goal. Michy Batshuayi once again showed his brilliance, drawing a vicious tackle in the box to win a penalty, which he then buried, shooting straight down the middle. The Belgian star scored in the dying moments of the game to re-establish PSV's 2 goal cushion, after Michael de Leeuw pulled a goal back for Groningen.

The month's final game, at home to ADO Den Haag, presented the toughest challenge for the side, but also provided new signing Suso with the stage he needed to kickstart his PSV career. Scoring with an impressive snapshot after Karim Rekik pulled the ball back from the goal-line. Suso turned creator for the club's second goal, lofting a cross into the box for Rekik to head home after 61 minutes. The team were flying high, and even Jeffrey Bruma's disastrous own goal couldn't dampen the spirits of the Eindhoven Club, as they pulled into 2nd place in the league, just behind AZ on goal difference

Despite manager Tony Young claiming his transfer business was complete for the summer, two future starlets have turned his head in the last week of August, and, although the board were reluctant to stump up the cash, a £14m double swoop has seen their club land two quality youngsters: Luke Shaw and Ryan Gauld, from Southampton and Dundee United respectively.

Last Summer, Southampton starlet Luke Shaw was linked with a move to Manchester United, who were runners-up in the Premiership last season, but he turned down a reported £100k a week contract to stay with south-coast club Southampton. But he couldn't save his boyhood club from Relegation, and with the club's finances at stake, manager Guus Hiddink had to raise over £60m from transfers before the board would let him re-invest and rebuild the club. And as a valuable commodity, Shaw was one of the first to go.

For a slightly cut-price fee of £7m, Shaw could prove to be a very astute piece of business for Young and PSV: still only 19, and with lots of time to develop, he looks set to take over from loan star Alexander Buttner, who is in his second loan spell with the Eindhoven side, but will surely seek a more permanent move in the near future.

Another astute piece of business is the signing of 18 year old Scot Ryan Gauld from Dundee United. In January, the left winger was linked with moves to Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon, but neither could convince Dundee United to part with their top star. Young did though, cutting United's asking price by almost half, and loaning the star back to them until the end of the season.

The Scottish youngster made 31 appearances for his club last season, and was a constant threat to opposition defences; and Young will be looking for the same this season, as he watches his young winger develop - and look for that to continue upon Gauld's return to the club.
