David Moyes - Rebuilding a Reputation

Panathinaikos have confirmed the loan signings of Jesse Lingard (left) and Michael Keane (right) from Manchester United. Both young englishmen had been told that they would be loaned out by Louis Van Gaal, in order to gain some valuable first team experience. They join fellow Englishman Rio Ferdinand who also took the journey to Athens after his contract at Manchester United expired.

Jesse Lingard impressed last season during a successful loan stint at Birmingham City, where he netted 4 on his debut and would go on to score 6 goals in 13 games. Michael Keane also was loaned out last season enjoying first team football at both Derby County and Blackburn Rovers. Both young men are held in high regard by the coaching staff at Manchester United and have been tipped to have bright futures ahead of them.

It's always important in my eyes to have a blend between youth and experience at a football club, and that's what we're trying to do here stated Moyes. The chairman is a big fan of blooding in young footballers so I deceided to bring the two young lads in who I've seen first hand.

I wouldn't expect any more activity from us now, I'd imagine thats the business done. We aren't the richest team in the land and money was tight this season, but under no circumstances would we jeopordize the club by signing players who we cant afford.

Those signings have been good, however.

David Moyes has endured similiar agony during his opening games with Panathinaikos as he experienced at Manchester United, as the Greek side crash out of the Champions League during the qualifiers. Belgian powerhouse Standard Liege proved too much for David Moyes and co, who put up little resistance especially in the first leg. A 4-1 aggregrate score condemned Panathinaikos into a playoff for a Europa League spot, but in truth the club craved Champions League football, with much needed income on offer.

Moyes lack of European experience had been highlighted before he took the Manchester United job, yet infact it was in this very same competition where he managed to excell, reaching the quarter finals in a lacklusture season domestically. However there was to be no such feat with his new project, with the Greeks showing little in attacking play throughout both games. To make matters worse for Moyes, new signings Rio Ferdinand, Michael Keane and Jesse Lingard were all unable to feature having not been registerd in time.

Panathinkaikos did however manage to progress to the group stages of the Europa League, rather fortunately overturing a 1st leg deficet to defeat RNK Split after extra time. A first leg 4-2 defeat heaped more pressure on Moyes as the Greek press slated the teams lack of desire. The Serbians had been given little chance by many before the tie kicked off, and could hardly believe what was happening, with all players and staff celebrating each goal as if they had just won a league title.

However the return leg was a different story altoghther, with the Serbians almost in awe of the atmosphere created by the Panathinaikos fans. Panathinaikos did however have to hold their lead throughout extra time, with the away goal rule not kicking in until after the 120 minutes.

Moyes will be hoping for a much better preformance form his side when they kick of their league campaign in the coming days, and will also be looking forward to the Europa League groupstage draw which takes place tomorrow evening.
