Favre signs new deal

Favre celebrating with fans after the 5-2 victory over Augsburg

Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that manager Lucien Favre has extended his contract for a further two years. Favre, who took over in February 2011, immediately saved the club from relegation, before guiding Gladbach to the Champions League the following season.

Favre has been enjoying a fantastic season with Gladbach this year, and the Foals sit top of the league heading into the winter break, 2 points ahead of Wolfsburg in second, with Bayern and Dortmund a further one and four points behind respectively. Favre, who previously only had a year left to run on his contract, has reportedly taken a pay cut, and will only earn £8,750 p/w.

Favre, known for his expert tactics, had experimented with many styles during pre-season, but now seems to have settled on an attaching 5-3-2, much like that of Louis van Gaal's with Holland and Manchester United. This has led to only two defeats in Favre's first 28 this season, while Gladbach have been scoring an average of 2.4 goals per game.

However, not all is well at Gladbach. New signings Yann Sommer, Ibrahim Traore and Andre Hahn have all handed in transfer requests, each citing a lack of first-team football as their reasons.
TaroMisaki: I keep forgetting to add it. You will be able to see soon, as there is a mid-season update coming.

Lucien Favre: The Special One

Today here at bild.de we will be talking to Borussia Monchengaldbach boss Lucien Favre. The Swiss has been taking the Bundesliga by storm, and Gladbach lead the table at the Christmas winter break, while also being through to the DFB Pokal quarter finals against Dortmund in March, and a tasty Europa League draw against Ajax.

Favre's excellent work as a tactician, with the use of a fairly average team, have lead to people in the media dubbing him 'The Special One', much like Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho did to himself when he joined the Chelsea in 2004.

Ah, Mr Favre! Welcome to bild.de! First of all: how come Gladbach are doing so well at the moment?

Hello, thank you for having me here! Well, I like to think that it is the team developing. We have some brilliant players all across the park, with some players really prepared to give their all in every match.

We have been playing good football, while still remaining solid at the back: when Augsburg scored the other day, it was only the first Timo (Horn) had conceded in over 500 minutes.

Ah, and while we talk about Timo, what about all the signings?

Well, we made 13 transfers this summer, which I think the club definitely needed. We let go of Kruse, Raffael, de Jong, Wendt and Brouwers, so I think that we had to go all out and replace them. All the players that we have signed have impressed, and it is sad to see that Ibra, Andre and Yann (Traore, Hahn and Sommer) all want to leave. I do understand their point, but it would be nice to have them at the club for longer, as they are all great guys.

Timo, Fabian, Stefan and Eder have all immediately become a major part of our defence this season, and they are the reason we have been so successful.

And what about the midfielders and attackers?

Well, again, Will Hughes has be a revelation. I mean: to be 19 years old, moving from England's 2nd tier to a top club in Germany, and being able to produce these sort of performances? Wow, it amazes even me. Everyone in Germany knew about Kevin, as he is a brilliant talent. It was great to see him pull on a Germany top earlier this year.

And Antonio and Nilmar have been excellent additions as well. Antonio has supplies goals and scored them, while Nilmar has been brilliant in training. He is very skilful, and loves a good laugh with the boys. But he is also a great professional, very helpful with the younger lads.

Are you looking at any deals during the upcoming window?

I have my eyes on one or two players, but mainly I will be rebuilding our youth setup. I have already agreed deals for five players, all coming from Malmo in Sweden. They are all very talented, and have come through together. Although we don't have any Swede's, Stefan (Strandberg) is the guy I will look for help from.

Well Mr Favre, it has been a pleasure talking to you, good luck for the rest of the season: I'm sure we will talk again soon.
<3 I love that scout report XD
basham97: Cheers mate, took ages as well. So much code etc.

Will Hughes: European Golden Boy

Borussia Monchengladbach's Will Hughes has been in excellent form for the Foals this season. In 28 matches, he has scored eight goals, assisted 15 and all at an average rating of 7.52.

And it hasn't gone unnoticed.

The 19 year old, who joined from Derby County for £11.25M, was awarded the European Golden Boy award at the FIFA Ballon D'Or gala dinner. Hughes can now claim to be the best youngster in Europe, and joining former winners such as Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney, he will be hoping to be up for the Ballon D'Or in the future.

Hughes, who joined Derby at the age of 14, while he was still a schoolboy at public school Repton, played 38 times for the Championship club, scoring two goals. Although he is a boyhood Liverpool fan, Hughes always took a liking to Paul Scholes, and said that he hopes to be like him in the future.

"I can't believe I have won a trophy such as this! It means so much to me and my family. It has been a brilliant couple of years, first becoming a regular at Derby before moving to Gladbach, and now I'm a regular here!"

The other winner on the night was Juan Mata, who pipped Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta to the Ballon D'Or.
