Gladbach: January Transfers

Borussia Monchengladbach had a busy transfer window, with 10 players joining the club, while five left. Firstly, the expected departures of Andre Hahn, Yann Sommer, Ibrahima Traore and Nilmar all completed deals, moving elsewhere for a total fee of £8.9M.
Traore joined Kobenhavn in Denmark for a fee of £3M, while German winger Andre Hahn, joined Bundesliga side Mainz for a cut-price of £1.9M. Both players only joined in the summer, and failed to establish themselves as a part of the club during their 6 months.
Yann Sommer, the Swiss goalkeeper left to join Grasshopper for a fee of £1.8M. This means Gladbach made a £5M loss on the keeper, formerly of Basel. Nilmar, the nomadic Brazilian striker who joined on a free, left for Dinamo Moscow for a fee £2.2M, after Gladbach rejected lower offers from Inter and Santos. Branimir Hrgota, the Croatian attacking midfielder also left the club, this time on loan bound for Werder Bremen.
Coming into the club were lots of youngsters, after manager Lucien Favre announced that he would be rebuilding the club's youth setup. Five Swedish players, all joining from Malmo arrived for around £2.5M. Anton Gustafsson, who has already made one appearance for Sweden Under 21's, plays up front, as well as Philip Johansson. Lewicki is a highly rated right back, while Nilsson and Andersson both play as defensive midfielders.
Robin Perdersen joined from Norwegian champions Molde, and cost Gladbach £11.25k. Gladbach negotiated a deal with Perdersen after fighting of interest from Arsenal and Liverpool. Jim Roberts, the young attacking full back from America, joined for a deal rising to £5M from Houston Dynamo.
The biggest signing was without doubt Diego Reyes, the Mexican centre back. He joined from Porto for a fee of around £17M, and will look to slot straight into the back 3. Reyes, who also played for Club America in Mexico, has made 12 caps for Mexico, while also playing in last summer's World Cup.
Finally, Danny Cabezas, the Ecuadorian attacking midfielder joins for £275k from hometown club Liga de Quito, while centre midfielder Darrell Brennan joins from Sligo Rovers in Ireland.

Final Matches
So, after a long and exciting Bundesliga season, a result will be revealed based on one set of results. Gladbach, currently occupy first place, and hold a three point advantage over Dortmund. Gladbach can also boast a higher goal difference. Bayern Munich, who were title favourites, cannot mathematically win the league, as they are on 69 points.
So what are the scenarios?
Scenario 1: Gladbach beat Augsburg away: they win the Bundesliga, no matter what happens at Dortmund, who face Hoffenheim on Saturday.
Scenario 2: Gladbach draw: They win the league regardless.
Scenario 1: Gladbach lose, Dortmund win: Dortmund would have to make up an unlikely 14 goal deficit.
Overall, Dortmund must win for a chance, while Gladbach only need a point to secure the title. Gladbach will know their fate when they head into their match at Augsburg.
Preview
Borussia Monchengladbach
Gladbach came into this predicted to finish in 6th place, comfortably in the Europa League slots, and, at 40-1 odds for the title, nobody expected them to be in the position they are in at the moment. With 22 wins in the league this season and only four defeats, Gladbach will be determined to gain reward for their hard effort. After a poor month in March, Gladbach have fought back with five straight victories, beating Dortmund, who are in 2nd place, with a 92nd minute goal in what might turn out to be the decider.
Gladbach had also been fighting on three fronts, with their Europa League campaign, as well as the DFB Pokal. The Europa League unfortunately ended at the hands of other Bundesliga dark horses Wolfsburg, who have since fallen off the pace in the league. In the DFB Pokal, Gladbach have found themselves ready to face Bayern Munich in the final after the season ends, hopefully leaving a chance for Bayern to win something.
Much of Gladbach's success has been down to Englishman Will Hughes and striker Kevin Volland, who together have been involved in 87 of the team's goals in all competitions this season. Volland will be hoping for a few more goals against Augsburg, as he tries to win the Top Goalscorer award, where he is two goals behind Ivica Olic. Hughes meanwhile, winner of the European Golden Boy award, is second only to Kevin De Bruyne on the assists count in the Bundesliga.
Manager Lucien Favre, who announced a clear out of the club last summer, has also been pivotal to a season that promised so little for Gladbach fans, but his rewarded them with so much.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund are very much at the opposite end of the spectrum to Gladbach. Expected to fight it out with Bayern Munich for the top two spots, Dortmund have found themselves where they want to be: above Bayern Munich. However, they are also behind Gladbach. At 5-4 odds on winning the league, Dortmund were expected to challenge.
And so they have.
With the signings of Adrian Ramos, Ciro Immobile, Shaqiri and Stanciu, Dortmund filled the huge void left by Robert Lewandowski more than adequately. Along with Marco Reus, Aubamayeng and Mkhitiryan, Dortmund have a formidable attack. Goals came from the four new signings as well as the three aforementioned.
And while Dortmund have been strong in the league, they have not been up to much elsewhere. An early season victory over Bayern in the Super Cup is all they can boast about, after being knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Gladbach in the quarter finals, and, having lost to Monaco in the first knockout round, crashed out of Europe around the same time.
Klopp has certainly also been a part of Dortmund's season, with excellent tactics and substitutions, it is unlucky that they find themselves in 2nd place and with a very slim, unlikely chance of grasping the Bundesliga.

LIVE: Gladbach vs Augsburg

Summary
- Dortmund won 4-0 yesterday
- Gladbach win league as long as they don't lose by 10 goals
- A win secures the title
- Goal highlights available at bottom of page
Guten taag Ladies and Gentlemen! Today we bring you coverage of the Gladbach vs Augsburg match. This match can decide who the Bundesliga will go to, after Dortmund won 4-0 yesterday afternoon. Gladbach will win with any result, as long as they don't go down by something ridiculous.
16:37 It looks as though the teams are about to come. The weather is cloudy with showers here at the SGL Arena in Augsburg. It looks as though we have a capacity crowd as well, probably of Gladbach fans who made the 600km journey.
16:43 Augsburg lost 5-2 to Gladbach when they visited Borussia Park in December. Goals from Volland, Kramer, Di Natale and a brace from Johnson sunk them that day.
16:49 The referee for today will be Peter Sippel. The German has taken charge of 64 matches this season, handing out 68 yellow cards and four red cards.
17:19 And we have the confirmed team sheets now. Augsburg (4-4-2): Hitz, Verhaegh ©, Hong Jeong-Ho, Klavan, Ostrzolek, Baier, Medojevic, Petsos, Sissoko, Matvz, Djurdjic. Sub: Manninger, Kohr, Caiuby, Seferovic, Callsen-Bracker, Giesselmann, Sararer. Gladbach (5-2-1-2): Horn, Reyes, Strandberg, Balanta, Jantschke, Johnson, Kramer, Xhaka, Hughes, Johansson, Volland. Subs: Dominguez, Stranzl, Carvalho, Di Natale, Murru, Herman, Kurt.
17:30 Looks like everything is set. And we're off!
17:31 Augsburg starting strong down the right, and Matvz finds space to get a shot away! High and wide, but the intent is there. Augsburg aren't here to roll over.
17:53 GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Gladbach take the lead in brilliant fashion, as Fabian Johnson found space down the left hand side. He whipped in a fantastic cross with plenty of pace, which none other than Kevin Volland met with a bullet header in to the roof of the net. Hitz left helpless.
18:01 That's a silly challenge, and Cristoph Kramer picks up a deserved yellow card. He loses the ball, before clattering into the back of Augsburg's Sissoko.
18:09 GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Gladbach double their lead with a strike from young Swede Philip Johansson. Hughes deep corner was headed clear, only to Johansson who arrived about 10 yards out to volley first time between Hitz and Sissoko.
18:45 Half-time here in Augsburg, and it is party time for the travelling Gladbach fans. 600km for the winning of the title. Definitely worth it!
Former Germany international Michael Ballack Gladbach have played well so far. Two good goals and some excellent passing, especially from Strandberg and Kramer. Both have been exceptional.
19:00 Gladbach get us back underway, and they head straight towards the Augsburg goal, where Johnson is unlucky not to thread a pass through to Hughes.
19:02 Volland is tackled as he goes through on goal, but the ball lands at Johnson's feet. Another brilliant ball is played in which Hitz struggles to deal with. He is still on the floor when Volland has another effort from close range, but Hitz manages to save with his shoulder. Still 2-0.
19:05 Balanta receives a booking from the referee, as he follows Matavz to the ball, before tripping the Slovenian striker over.
19:06 And from the resulting free-kick, the ball ends up at Djurdjic's feet, but he balloons his effort towards Row Z.
19:23 GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! Daniel Baier pulls one back for Augsburg as he finds space behind Johnson, before firing into the far corner past Horn. Poor defending from Johnson!
19:25 And Gladbach react to that goal with a triple substitution. Balanta will make way for captain Stranzl, who will leave the club this summer. Johansson will be replaced by Di Natale, with this probably being his last match in football, and the poor Will Hughes will be replaced Patrick Hermann, with Volland dropping into attacking midfield.
19:35 Stranzl gets in a mix up with the ball, and hoofs his clearance into Matvz. The ball rebounds to Djurdjic on the edge of the D, but he places his shot just wide. Lucky for Stranzl!
19:38 Now the Augsburg onslaught begins, with Sararer crossing deep to the back post. Matavz can only nod down for goalscorer Baier, but his shot is well held by Timo Horn.
19:45 Celebrations in T-Minus three minutes! Not long now for Gladbach fans!
19:46 Hermann goes close for gladbach on what will likely be his last Gladbach appearance. The Gladbach trainee should have scored there.
19:48 The Gladbach are jumping around to my right now. Flares are being lit up! No pyro, no party they say! And there it is! The full time whistle. BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH ARE CHAMPIONS!!!
