Transfer Deadline Day: 5 Biggest Buys (Summer 2014)
It has been a busy transfer window across the globe, with some top deals being made. As we have arrived at Transfer Deadline Day, we'll give you a run-down on the five most expensive buys of the last few months.
#1 - Luis Suárez - Liverpool to Barcelona - £75 million
The most expensive signing of the summer was made by Spanish giants Barcelona. Before the FIFA World Cup, many said it was inevitable that Luis Suárez would leave Liverpool, but more controversy from the Uruguayan striker put his future in doubt. Barcelona decided that the 26-year-old's quality outweighed the risk of more controversy.
Despite a four month ban from all competitions, Luis Enrique splashed out £75 million on the player, who topped the Barclays Premier League goalscoring charts for Liverpool last season with 31 goals.
Barcelona will be without the player until late October time, but the quality they possess up front, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and recent acquisitions Timo Werner and Andriy Yarmolenko should be enough to tide Barcelona over until Suarez's return.
Liverpool have spent some of the money that the sale brought in, but have not yet secured a top class striker, something which many claim is needed to fill the gap left by Suarez.
#2 - James Rodríguez - AS Monaco to Real Madrid - £71 million
After stunning everyone with his performances at the World Cup, it was Real Madrid who captured Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez, for a big fee of £71 million. Many feel that, although the player is quality, Madrid overpaid for the Monaco player, who is just 22-years-old.
They also claim that Rodríguez is not necessarily needed at the Bernabeu, with the likes of Isco and Toni Kroos already battling for places in the first team squad.
And early signs suggest that they could be right - Madrid have played three league games, but James Rodríguez has not featured in a single one, Ancelotti preferring Croatian midfielder Luka Modric to the Colombian.
However, it is very early on in the season, and Rodríguez still has the chance to make a big impact at his new club, whose fans will be hoping that he will not be wasted on the bench.
James Rodríguez signed a six year deal with the UEFA Champions League holders.
#3 - David Luiz - Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain - £50 million
One piece of business that has been criticized is that of PSG's £50 million acquisition of Brazilian defender David Luiz from Chelsea.
Laurent Blanc's side wrapped up a deal for the 27-year-old, breaking the world transfer record for a defender.
The deal was completed before Brazil's disappointing World Cup campaign in their own backyard, where they were humiliated by eventual winners Germany.
The centre back, who can also play as a defensive midfielder has played in just one of PSG's four opening games, though this has been due to injury.
Fans do feel like the defender can be a success in France, but were left confused at the huge transfer fee involved.
#4 - Alexis Sánchez - Barcelona to Arsenal - £35 million
Initially expected to be a part of the deal to bring Luis Suarez to the Nou Camp, Chilean forward Alexis Sánchez eventually joined an English club - but it wasn't Liverpool.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was delighted to bring the 24-year-old to the club, and the player committed to a five year deal.
He has already made a fantastic impact with The Gunners, helping the club to a win over Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield, and scoring his first goal in a 5-2 home win over Swansea City.
Arsenal fans are understandably thrilled at this capture. Sanchez has been deployed on the right wing, with former Real Madrid star Mesut Özil attacking the left flank, both players feeding in French striker Olivier Giroud.
#5 - Diego Costa - Atletico Madrid to Chelsea - £32.5 million
Another former La Liga star rounds off this list, with Spanish striker Diego Costa joining Chelsea for £32.5 million.
The 24-year-old has picked up a minor injury, but made a good impression in pre-season, scoring five goals for the club in just three starts, making four appearances from the bench.
However, he has not been able to carry that form, and the form he was in last season, through to the new league campaign with Chelsea, failing to score in two consecutive competitive matches.
Chelsea fans treated this signing as a blessing, having lacked a quality striker for the past couple of seasons.
Coupled with the return of club legend Didier Drogba, they were delighted at the business that Jose Mourinho was getting through, but will hope that Costa pulls his finger out soon to avoid being labelled as a flop.
