Player Of The Month - Diego Cervero

    App: 6 Goals: 6 Av. Rating: 7.34

Cervero once again showed this month why he is the most dangerous striker in the league as he hit six goals in six games; including a hat-trick against Celta Vigo's "B" team.

The club's all-time leading goalscorer has been in incredible form all season and has been the league's standout player. Cervero finishes joint 1st with teammate Xavier Annunziata in the race for the Segunda Division B1 golden boot, but finishes 2nd overall on the virtue of playing only 18 minutes less than the right winger.

However in terms of assists, there is no doubt that Cervero led the pack with 21 assists in his 35 league games. Teammate Vicente finished 2nd with 18, followed by Zamora's Jokin Esparza in 3rd place with 15.

    The Manager's View

'What a great end to the regular season. We have played 36 games and won 34 of them, without losing a single match. That is an achievement any team, anywhere would be proud of and because of it we will go down in the record books.'

'The players played their hearts out from September to May and we have an unbeaten season, a league points record, a goals scored record, a goals allowed record, a new all-time leading goalscorer and a historic win over a La Liga team in the Copa Del Rey to show for it.'

'To say I am proud does not justify my emotions, but we must keep our celebrations in check as now we enter the playoffs against a strong Cadiz team who finished the season with 80 points and 5 points clear of 2nd place.'

'We must maintain focus and make sure our performance levels do not drop. Should we win over the two legs we will have secured promotion to the Liga Adelante; but we do not want to stop there. We will play the winner of the other Segunda Divisions winners' play-off to determine who is the overall champion of the Segunda Divisions and that is another trophy I want in the Oviedo cabinet.'

'Thank you again to all of our supporters and everyone involved in the club. This club deserves to be in the Liga Adelante and we will do everything to ensure that it happens.'

Fernando Ruiz Hierro - Real Oviedo S.A.D.

All good things come to an end but thank god we didn't mess up the playoffs and had a 4-0 lead! That would have been disastrous after our perfect season! :O

Olympiakos Volou 1937 Approach Fernando Hierro

  • Greek club offer Hierro interview with intention to appoint the Oviedo boss.
  • Volou have just gained promotion to the Superleague after winning the National B Division.
  • Previous manager Jose Manuel Roca sacked despite winning promotion.
  • Olymp. Volou have no affiliation to the 41 times Greek Superleague champions Olympiakos.
  • Olympiakos Volou (who even wear the same red and white stripes as their namesakes) celebrate their promotion to the Greek Superleague.

Volou Chairman Paschalis Klonaridis confirmed to the Greek media today that he has extended the offer of an interview to Oviedo manager Fernando Hierro:

'We want Fernando to be our new manager. We have contacted Oviedo and offered Fernando an interview, this of course will be a formality as we know Fernando is the man to lead us forward in the Superleague.' Klonaridis told reporters at the Municipal Stadium of Volos today.

'We are a very ambitious club and we have funds to inject into the squad for the upcoming season. Jose did a terrific job and we thank him for it, but we felt it was the right time to bring in a higher calibre of manager.' he added.

Recently sacked manager Roca, who is also Spanish is part of a current trend of Spanish players and managers residing in Greece. Current Olympiakos manager Michel has 4 Spaniards currently in his ranks whilst only 5 of the 18 teams competing in the Superleague this season did not have a player of Spanish nationality in their squads.

Real Oviedo president Jorge Menendez was quick to respond to the news this morning but there is no official comment from Hierro himself as yet:

'I am fully aware of the interest in Fernando today. This was to be expected after his fantastic work this season but I will tell you what I told Olympiakos Volou; he is under contract and is loved by the fans and players here, I see no reason why he would want to leave.' stated Menendez.

Hierro has had a fantastic first season as a manager with Real Oviedo after he took his side on a 43 game unbeaten run in all competitions. The former Real Madrid captain has only lost one game as a manager and is said to already be preparing for life in the Liga Adelante next season.

A statement from Hierro in the next few days as Oviedo fans wait nervously to hear word on his future.
DON'T LEAVE! Oviedo can go so far under your tutelage!

La Liga Clubs Monitoring Real Oviedo's Standout Performers As Summer Transfer Window Approaches

  • Real Madrid and Barcelona enter bidding war for Oviedo youth team star Alexandre Herculano.
  • Hierro rejects bids from Getafe, Elche and Mallorca for midfield engine Angel Martinez.
  • Arsenal look to follow up their previous interest in wonderkid Alex Grimaldo.
  • Steaua Bucharest knocked back in an attempt to sign Andrea Orlandi.
  • Hierro also rejects bids from Elche and Almeria for centre back Adrian Lopez.
  • No official statement from the club following Olymp. Volou's approach for Fernando Hierro.

  • It will most likely be a busy transfer window at the Nuevo Carlos Tartiere as clubs look to sign star performers from Oviedo's unbeaten season.

Following a multiple-record breaking season for Real Oviedo, it was always inevitable that club's would become interested in their star players. It has only been a week since the season ended and the with the planet turning it's attention to the upcoming World Cup 2014 in Brazil; club managers are looking to get their business done early.

Following a succession of rejected bids from Arsenal for Oviedo's 18 year old La Masia prodigy Alex Grimaldo last January, it seems that Arsene Wenger is still keen to get his man as the Frenchman looks set to reignite his interest.

Grimaldo made 37 appearances for Oviedo this season and ended the campaign with 4 goals and 6 assists, but also showed the professionalism and composure of a 10 year veteran. However despite Arsenal's renewed interest in the former Barcelona player, it seems that other European giants have sat up and taken notice as Oviedo chairman Jorge Menendez confirmed this morning at a press conference in Asturias:

'Alex had a great season and now we will have to fight to keep him. There are many interested parties and we have fielded enquires from Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.' Menendez told reporters.

Despite interest from Europe's giants, it is believed that Grimaldo is keen to continue his development with Oviedo.

Another teenager that may be set for a big money move is 16 year old striker Alexandre Herculano. Herculano is a local boy who joined the Oviedo youth set-up at age 8 and signed his first professional contract with the club on his 16th birthday of April this year.

Herculano made 5 substitute appearances in the final couple of months of the season and even registered an assist for Vicente in the 3-0 win over Noja on the final day. It is believed that Real and Barca's scouts have been monitoring the wonderkid for 4 years and have now both made their moves with £5.5m bids for the striker which Oviedo have rejected.

Whether he stays at Oviedo or makes a move to one of Spain's big two, remember the name Alexandre Herculano. Because at bids of £5.5m for a 16 year old, he may just be the next big thing.

Angel made 40 appearances for Oviedo this season and was a vital component in Hierro's midfield.

After joining on a free transfer following his release from English Championship side Blackpool, Angel has thrived in his key role for the title-winning side.

The 28 year old midfield engine scored 5 goals and laid on 6 assists for his teammates this campaign but his responsibility of midfield protection was executed perfectly as he provided stable and reliable performances consistently throughout the season.

Following his exploits this year, recently relegated Getafe have earmarked Angel as one of their top-priority signings and have made a bid of £375k for the Oviedo number 4. Liga Adelante Mallorca have also had a bid of a similar amount rejected whilst Liga BBVA side Elche have only enquired about the midfielders availability.

All bids have thus far been rejected by Hierro as the former Madrid captain looks to keep hold of his star performers from this season.

Bids of £200k for Adrian Lopez from Elche and Almeria have also been rejected whilst Steaua have also had multiple enquiries for Andrea Orlandi rejected. With the end of the season only being a week old it truly is an indicator that this Summer's transfer window will be an interesting one in Spain, with a lot of hard work still ahead for Real Oviedo.
Half of Oviedo is wanted by other clubs, you must be doing something right :)
