In: Wade Elliot on free transfer
In: Jack Redshaw from Morecambe
I bought in Wade Elliot to be my left winger, and also for experience.
Striker Redshaw is bought in due to Kedwell having done very poorly and Midson despite having an excellent season, needs competition. Redshaw, however barely scored and couldn't get in the team due to Midson's form and Redshaw's average form. On top of that, Redshaw's arrival seemed to send a message to Kedwell, and he embarked on an incredible goalscoring record.
Wade Elliot was doing poorly left wing, so I move him to number 10, where he excels, scoring a goal a game and getting a rating between 7.8 to 10 every time. This meant my left winger problem was back, so I search around the loan market. I loan Jonny Fenwick, who manages just 3 games for me before doing his cruciate and I was left with no choice but to send him back, which was annoying as he had done well for me! The loan window now closed, I'm forced to use Arthur and Kennedy as my left wingers for the rest of the season.
Back to the league (Finally)...
Nothing of note happened between january and March 22nd, other than some very average and inconsistent form, with 4 wins, 3 draws and 9 losses. Were are being dragged back into the battle now. Were still a few points clear, but I'd like to put a lot more distance between us...
Wow! What an amazing run! That has put a lot of distance between us and the relegation battlers. That has dragged us out of the bottom 6 category comfortably into the mid-table category, which was the target for the season. My chances for relegation were always slim and we never went below 19th, but I'm very happy anyway. Suppose I should go ahead and play the last 3 games of the season now.
My last 3 games are against Newport, Oxford and Portsmouth. Newport end our winning run with a 0-0 draw, before losing 2-0 to Oxford. Portsmouth steamroller us 5-2 on the final day to round off an OK season.
End of Season 2013-2014

Board overall verdict: They believe we had an OK season
My verdict: I think it was an alright season. It was very up and down, with 2 amazing runs, 1 super long bad run and an incredibly inconsistent run. I'm pleased with my signings, Kedwell got better every game and Elliot did excellently in his half-season. I came a few places lower than I wanted, as I was aiming for about 14th. Overall, it was alright.
Now everyone is on holiday before pre-season, I have the time to look around for players. I'd like to improve on last season's 17th and will aim for top ten with possibly a playoff challenge. For that, the squad need improving. I don't need to completely rebuild the team, but I need to make changes. I'm looking for a left winger (obviously), a centre-back as Fuller had a poor season and a defensive midfielder. My formation is going to change slightly this season. It is the same as last year except that we now have 2 number 10's rather than 1 and only 1 central midfielder as opposed to 2.
While searching around for player's, I have a huge scare. With a month of my contract left to run, the board offer me a contract. I decide to discuss philosophies before negotiating as there are a few things I want to change. There is a glitch with FM14 where sometimes in chats if the conversation goes on for quite a long time, it doesn't let you scroll down so you can't continue the conversation and the end conversation button is out of reach, meaning you have to cancel the conversation. I was forced to cancel the conversation when this glitch happened. But what happened is the game thought I wanted to cancel contract negotiations as well, so basically this meant I had accidentally turned down a contract. I waited in hope that I would get offered another contract, and with 1 day to go on my contract, I still had no offers. This meant I had to literally ask the board for a new contract. Thankfully, they accepted, and I made sure it was a 4-year deal so I wouldn't have to go through that again. Phew!
So, with contract craziness out of the way, it was time to buy.
Shelton Martis from York (37K)
Hrvoje Kovacevic on a free transfer
Callum McFadzean from Sheffield United (loan)
Shelton Martis is a centre-back with very good ratings. He was the definitely the right man and I broke the club transfer record to get him.
Hrvoje Kovacevic is a defensive midfielder also with very good ratings. He wanted a big wage but I got him anyway.
Callum McFadzean is a left winger with good ratings and an excellent potential. I got him on a season long loan.
Time to release players!
Joel Ambalu to Bishop's Stortford
Morgan Ferrier to Salisbury
Jim Fenlon to Luton
Egil Kaja to Canvey Island
Ollie Haines to Carshalton
Billy Bishop to Canvey Island
Oxford sign Callum Kennedy on a pre contract. I was going to release him anyway.
With all transfers done, this is my first team for the season
Goalkeeper: Ross Worner
Backup: Seb Brown
Centre-backs: Shelton Martis, Alan Bennett and Andy Frampton
Backup: Barry Fuller, Aaron Morris and Darren Jones
Defensive midfielder: Hrvoje Kovacevic
Backup: Sammy Moore, Aaron Morris
Central midfielder: Peter Sweeney
Backup: Sammy Moore, Aaron Morris
Number 10's: Wade Elliot and Harry Pell
Backup: Luke Moore
Left winger: Callum McFadzean
Backup: Chris Arthur
Right winger: George Francomb
Backup: Tom Beere
Striker: Danny Kedwell
Backup: Jack Midson
Now that's done, I suppose I'll start the season.
That's a good start to the season! Shrewsbury are a strong side and my tip for promotion so to beat them is very promising. The goals came from Wade Elliot, Jack Midson and Luke Moore. Lots of players had a good game, Elliot and Midson in particular, Elliot getting an 8 and Midson an 8.2.
Capital One Cup time!
Win 13-12 on pens
Now that is what I call dramatic! Against a side two divisions above I was expecting to lose so I rested some key players. Francomb, Sweeney, Worner, Elliot and McFadzean are all on the bench, so Sainte-Luce, Brown, Arthur, Luke Moore and Aaron Morris all play. They went 1 up in the 68th, a few minutes after bringing Elliot on. In the 83rd Sweeney and Francomb also come on, proving an inspired change. In the 89th minute Francomb takes a corner and it meets Sweeney's boot lashing out at it and Sweeney volleys home to take it to extra time. In the shootout, Midson missed my 5th penalty, which would have won it for us if we scored. When Brighton took their 14th penalty and missed for the second time, Elliot had the opportunity to win it and he slotted home. I'm not getting ahead of myself, but I'm very happy with the first 2 games of this season!
Some inconsistent form follows this good start, we draw 1-1 with Southend and then beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 to launch us to to promotion places. We lose against against title-challenging Chesterfield 3-2 and then in the Capital One Cup we play Aston Villa in the Second Round and lose 5-2, which as annoying as we held our own very well. It was 2-2 at the 80th minute! I'm worried that this may be the start of a bad run...
Very happy with that!
