Brendan Rodgers signs contract extension

Brendan Rodgers has signed a new, improved, contract designed to keep him at Liverpool for another season. Quite apart from rewarding Rodgers for his achievement in steering the club into second place in the Premier League and guaranteeing Champions League football at Anfield next season, the deal is intended to thwart any attempts to poach the 41-year-old.

The Northern Irishman had a year remaining on his previous agreement and this lucrative extension – its precise length has not been specified but it is understood to extend to 2015 – will make it very expensive for any potential suitors to prise him away from Anfield.

“I am both humbled and privileged to be offered the chance to extend my stay at this great club,” said Rodgers. Appointed as Kenny Dalglish’s successor in 2012, the former Swansea manager experienced a deceptively slow-burn start, leading Liverpool to seventh place in 2012-13.

If progress was initially incremental it has become dramatic in recent months, with Liverpool finishing the season just ended two points behind Manchester City after a campaign in which they came within touching distance of securing their first title since 1990.

No matter, they qualified for Europe’s showpiece competition for the first time in four years and Rodgers was named the League Managers Association’s manager of the year.

Rodgers, a coach at Chelsea under José Mourinho who subsequently managed Watford and Reading with mixed success before establishing himself at Swansea, has turned Liverpool into one of England’s most attractive teams with his clear footballing vision and principled playing philosophy.

Quite apart from improving almost beyond recognition previously struggling individuals such as the midfielder Jordan Henderson, Rodgers has kept the club’s star striker, Luis Suárez, happy while also modifying his old Swansea “pass the opposition to death” mantra sufficiently to make best use of players such as Steven Gerrard. Off the pitch, he earned further credit for an impressive demeanour and instinctive empathy with the club’s history, most notably involving the Hillsborough disaster and its victims. The manager said: “I am very happy to build on the foundations we have built over the last two years. Now we move on to the next phase which I believe will be as exciting, challenging and rewarding.”

John Henry, Liverpool’s principal owner, and Tom Werner, the club’s chairman, issued a joint statement, stating that all at Anfield were “very fortunate” to have Rodgers at the helm.
“We place our trust in Brendan to deliver the vision we share for Liverpool Football Club,” the American businessmen said. “Brendan is at the heart of what we, as an ownership group, are trying to achieve on the pitch.
“This season has reaffirmed everyone’s belief that we can bring football success to Liverpool and we are all committed to working together to achieve that. Players and supporters have made it clear how important Brendan is to our success and so to have him commit to us for the long term is a great boost for everyone.”
Henry completed his £300m takeover of Liverpool from his fellow American Tom Hicks and the US hedge fund Mill Financial in October 2010 and, four years on, Anfield is an infinitely happier place.

If the prospect of Suárez potentially being rushed back into Uruguay’s side following the minor knee surgery the striker underwent last week – not to mention Real Madrid casting covetous eyes at Rodgers’s prize asset – has potentially clouded the horizon, Liverpool fans remain excited by what the manager terms “the next phase”.
It is likely to see Dalglish’s successor targeting, among several others, the Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana. “Obviously it’s the off-season and we have the World Cup and other various things going on,” said Rodgers. “People need to refresh and have a break but we’re still working on signings.
“The signings are complex; they’re not all simple signings. But we need to strengthen up the squad and that’s something that we’re working hard to do over the next number of weeks.

“Our dream and goal is to win the Premier League. That’s what we want. We’ve shown this season we can compete for that. With some new additions we believe that we can fight again.

“The objective for me was to try to get Liverpool established again as one of the leading clubs in European and domestic football and we’re on course for."

Liverpool complete summer spending spree

Final spend is in region of 140 million pounds

The Reds lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona earlier this summer but have signed a number of stars since his departure and the Northern Irishman is delighted with his acquisitions.

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool's summer signings are an indication of how far the club has come in recent seasons.

Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have all arrived from Southampton since the end of last season, while the Merseyside club has also signed Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Javier Manquillo and Divock Origi, with the latter rejoining Lille on loan for the 2014-15 campaign.

Liverpool also finalised the transfers of Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno and AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli and Rodgers believes the Premier League runner up has a growing reputation in Europe, despite the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

"It's a huge indication of the progress of the club - a really good symbol of where the club is at," the Northern Irishman told reporters. "We have made huge strides in the last couple of years. That ability to attract top players is great. Lovren is a top player and a guy sought after by a number of clubs, so for him to say he only wanted to come to Liverpool was great. Young Markovic had two or three other clubs there waiting to take him - clubs where he had mates from his international team - but he wanted to come to Liverpool.

"These guys watch football throughout Europe. They watch us and want to be part of what we're doing. It hasn't just happened by accident, the most important thing is to have an identity. There is real excitement around the club. If you’re a football player in Europe watching how we played last season and saw our supporters, your reaction would be that you'd want to play in that environment - it's a team that plays exciting football."

"People claim that Liverpool will struggle for goals without Luis Suarez, people forget that Liverpool were fine in his absence, we have total faith in Mario and Rickie to make up for Luis. Liverpool are not a one man team, no man is bigger than this club."

Liverpool open this season's campaign against Burnley on Saturday.

Liverpool make good start to Premier League season

Brendan Rodgers says league position has no importance at this stage

Liverpool have began life without Luis Suarez in fine fashion, losing just once this season. However, draws against Queens Park Rangers and West Bromwich Albion have seen the Reds sit in sixth place, seven points off leaders Chelsea. In an interview with Metro Sport, Brendan Rodgers told us that he expects Tottenham and Southampton to fade into obscurity over the coming months.

"After six games, the league table is not reflective of a team's real standing. I can't see Southampton and Tottenham making the top six, let alone the top four, the current bottom three will all stay up and Liverpool will be in a higher position. We've had a solid start, we were complacent against Manchester City and I let the boys know that, I think we can challenge for the title, definitely." He said when asked about his side's start.

Liverpool were leading 2-1 at the Etihad before a quickfire double from Sergio Aguero saw the Citizens take all three points. "It was an unfair result, mistakes were made, defensively, and we suffered because of that. We deserved more."

Well, Liverpool have won three of their six league games, drawing two and losing one.
They opened the campaign at Turf Moor, scoring six but letting in four in a Premier League goalscoring record game. Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana scored on their debuts while Suso scored his first goal for Liverpool, after recently signing a new deal which ended speculation over a move to Milan. Daniel Sturridge hit two while Raheem Sterling grabbed one enough to see of the newly promoted side, and a Danny Ings hat trick.

Sturridge and Sterling continued their goalscoring form into the club's opening home game at Anfield, revenge earned against Crystal Palace, who's infamous comeback from 3-0 down at Selhurst is considered a key reason why Liverpool did not win the title. Mario Balotelli made an instant impact, being subbed on to make his debut and marking the occasion with a goal, just three minutes later.

Liverpool then lost for the first time this season, losing a 2-1 lead to league champions Manchester City, well, Sergio Aguero.

The Kop went on to draw the next game, at home to Queens Park Rangers. A goal by Raheem Sterling against his former club not enough to take all three points, thanks to Charlie Austin's opener.

However, Brendan Rodgers' side were quick to return to winning ways, sending three past rumoured target Asmir Begovic with Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling again making the scoresheet.

The results see Liverpool lie in sixth place but with 32 games to go, nothing is set in stone yet.
