After two back-to-back promotions, Rangers sit in the Scottish Championship, meaning one more successful campaign would see them back in the Premiership in the first season it would be possible for them to do so. Many saw McCoist as the man to do this, but following personal issues and conflicting interested, McCoist resigned from his post to leave the job vacant.

Multiple managers have been suggested for the role since McCoists departure, many proven candidates who would no doubt be welcomed with open arms by the Gers.

Several sources, however, have linked the job to young coach Ian Cathro, who turns 28 next month. Cathro has spent spells as assistant head coach at Dundee United, Rio Ave and currently, Valencia CF. Cathro's appointment would make him the youngest ever coach in the SPFL, breaking the record of 33 years old.

Speculation has yet to lead to anything else, neither Cathro nor Rangers F.C. speaking out on the topic. It is expected, however, that Rangers will have appointed a new manager by the end of the week, and Cathro has been made quite a front runner by local bookmakers.

This morning a press conference was called to announce that 27 year old Scottish coach, Ian Cathro, would be the man to take Rangers forward. Cathro revealed his thoughts on his new job. "I am very exited. I know I'm ready for this role. I know people will doubt me because of my age, but I'd like to assure everyone that I have the same qualifications as anyone who'd be looking at this role. I'll prove myself in time."

Cathro then announced his purposeful five-year plan. "I've sat down and had a long conversation with Daivd [Somers] (Chairman), and we've discussed the future of the club. We've agreed that promotion this year is a must. The league title, if possible. The next four years, our hope is to become a solid Premiership club and get ourselves some silverware. Five years from now, we'd like to be challenging for the title, and to be playing is Europe. I know that could sound a bit ambitious, but I know I have the backing of the board, so we can make it happen."

Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville, commented on the appointment. "I think that [Rangers] are taking a huge risk in putting someone so young in charge of a football club. There are people twice his age who don't have the experience to manage such a reputable team. This is a pivotal season in Ranger's history and I don't know if they should be taking gambles like this at this stage."

"That being said, he is a promising young coach and, going on what his colleagues alone have to say about him, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes out there and does a good job. But it just seems like a big risk, and you have to applaud the board's confidence to pick someone like that."

Cathro's appointment has been received in a similar way by the Gers' fans, most very apprehensive over the situation. Judgement has to be reserved, however, until Cathro has been in charge for a little while.
