Season Preview

As Bayern Munich’s second season under the leadership of Guardiola, we take a look at the season that lies ahead, and try to digest as much as we can.

Pre-season

For this year’s pre-season trip, Die Bayern travel across central Europe, playing in countries such as Austria and Ukraine. On this trip they play six games. The first is a trip to Mexico City in Mexico to pit themselves against one of the biggest clubs in the country, Club América. This will be a tough game for der FCB, as most of their top German players are still recovering from the glorious World Cup in Brazil, meaning that the depth and the quality of Bayern’s squad won’t be there, making sure América feel they have a chance to get a result against one of Europe’s best sides – no mean feat. Despite the lack of options available for Guardiola, it will tell us a lot about his team. It will tell us if the squad has depth and quality to get results against good sides, something that is important for a team trying to win trophies on various different fronts.

The next game sees Bayern travel back to Europe and play against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. This game will again tell us a lot about Bayern, as they will have a game under their belt, and their fitness will be coming back after the summer off. Salzburg are by no means a brilliant side, but will provide Bayern an adequate test for this point in pre-season.

Bayern then continue their travels around Austria, and play SV Grödig. Grödig are possess far less quality than Salzburg, and therefore should be a stroll for Bayern, even without their world-class players, which they are without for the entire pre-season trip. It will show how Guardiola’s squad will cope with complacency and being favourites to win, something that is important for a team that wants to win domestic cups and titles, as coming up against a team that’s stature is a lot lower than yours, especially when you are club the size of Bayern Munich, is very likely, and they need to be able to deal with pressure like that.

They then travel to Ukraine to play Dynamo Kiyyv. This is Bayern’s first test, as the side possess talents that some of Europe’s top clubs are chasing – such as the likes of Aleksandar Dragovic. Dynamo will be a tough team to beat, as they will want to show that they can be resilient against Europe’s best, a trait needed to go far in Europe’s cup competitions. This will then show if Bayern can break down that play defensively against them – something that will occur regularly when you possess a team with the quality of attacking artillery that Bayern have. Guardiola’s teams, however, have been very good at doing this, so it shouldn’t prove a problem for them.

Munich then travel to Greece to pit themselves against AEK Athens, a team that was recently on the forefront of Greek football, challenging the likes of Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, before being relegated and years of mismanagement took its toll, meaning the club had to start in the third tier of Greek football. Because of this, the club is now an amateur side – meaning this is more of a glamor tie for AEK rather than a test for Bayern Munich, and will be used as a chance to get some more match practice under their belts by the German giants.

Bayern Munich will then travel back to Germany to play Sporting Lisbon, which is probably the toughest test that Bayern will face on this pre-season tour. Sporting are a side that is emerging to be a very good one, possessing many young talents and very good players, and this season will be wanting to prove a point - that they can challenge the likes of Porto and Benfica in the Portuguese League, and a good result against Bayern would set them in good stead for that. Bayern will be using this kind of tie to see how they handle the kind of side they would face in the group stages of the Champions League, and getting a result will be key to establish the quality of these kind of sides.

Season Overview

Bayern Munich will kick off their season against rivals Borussia Dortmund with the chance to get some silverware before the league campaign has even started in the German Super Cup. Bayern will desperately want a result here, as last season Guardiola’s men fell short, losing four-two to the same opponent, and this will hopefully make the side want to redeem themselves.

They will then face a team in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, which is yet to be drawn – but the calibre of sides usually drawn out of the hat at this point is low, meaning that Bayern are unlikely to get a side will provide any real challenge.

Die Bayern’s league campaign kicks-off with a glamour tie against Schalke at the Allianz, a result that Bayern will desperately want as it will show that they can beat one of the better sides in the division. The tough fixtures then continue, as they then face Bayer Leverkusen away before playing Dortmund again away. The tricky start for Munich, though, is in many ways a good thing, as it will give the team confidence for the rest of the season, but if bad results did come, it would be a chance for these teams to build up a head of steam in the title race.

Bayern then kick off their Champions League campaign, again yet to be drawn, and then play Hertha Berlin at home. The fixture list then provides no real challenges until the return fixtures in late January, apart from a games against Wolfsburg and Monchengladbach in November and December respectively. Bayern round off their domestic campaign with a game against Köln on the 23rd of May in Köln.

The Players

Bayern Munich possess many world-class players that will all have to perform consistently if Bayern want to challenge into the latter stages of the competitions on many different fronts. Here we will take a look at Bayern’s squad for the upcoming season.

The Captain

Philipp Lahm led his country to the World Cup in Brazil and once again showed his amazing leadership skills. The full back is regarded as one of the best there has ever been, and will be fundamental to Bayern’s season, and he will have to perform well in the defence or midfield if Bayern want to have a successful season. Possessing brilliant tackling, anticipation and teamwork skills, the thirty year old will be key to Bayern this season.

The Vice-Captain

He is one of the best centre midfielders of his generation. Bastian Schweinsteiger is a true warrior and leader, and someone any manager would want in their side. Now the captain of the German National Team, after being understudy to Lahm for many years, it is his time to shine. Possessing great passing, composure and teamwork skills, he will be the playmaker for Bayern this season.

Key Player

Robert Lewandowski followed many of top players this season, joining Bayern from Dortmund on a free transfer, a fantastic deal by die Bayern. He will certainly have to produce in his first season at the club, as after the sale of Mandzukic to Atletico Madrid, there is no striker that can fill in for the Poland captain. He will have to score plenty in both the Bundesliga and Champions League for Bayern to come anywhere near.

Hottest Prospect

There are many very good young players at Bayern at the moment, like David Alaba and Juan Bernat, but they cannot be considered as a hot prospect as they are key parts of Bayern’s first team. The ‘hottest prospect’ title goes to centre midfielder Gianluca Guadino. The young German will be a part of Bayern’s first team for the first time this season, and will enjoy learning from the likes of Lahm and Schweinsteiger. The seventeen-year old already has good passing, composure and technique, putting him in good stead to become one of the best midfielders in world in the future.

Expectations

This season, the expectations of the board and the fans will be extremely high. They will be expected to win the Bundesliga easily, the DFB-Pokal comfortably and at least reach the final of the Champions League. These hefty expectations will give Guardiola and his players lots to think about, and every one of them will have to perform at the highest level from day one to the last day.
