Honduras Star joins NYCFC

Today, NYCFC made the announcement that they had agreed to sign Honduran winger Marvin Chavez on a free transfer after his contract with Chivas USA expired.

Chávez – who is nicknamed "el hijo del viento" (the son of the wind) – spent the early part of his professional career playing in Honduras, for Victoria and with Marathón.

Chávez signed with FC Dallas of Major League Soccer on a loan deal in August 2009.[2] During the 2010 season Chávez became an important player for Dallas helping the club reach the MLS Cup final. On November 21, 2010, he played 105 minutes in the MLS Cup 2010 in which his club fell to Colorado Rapids. Chávez continued his fine play in 2011 and was named to the MLS Team of Week 10 and 12 during the 2011 MLS season for his goal-scoring performances against Real Salt Lake and New England Revolution. He gained Team of the Week honors again in Week 19 against New York Red Bulls.

On December 16, 2011, Chávez was traded to San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation money. Chávez had a breakout season in 2012 for San Jose as he made 27 league appearances and recorded 3 goals and 13 assists in helping his new club capture the 2012 Supporters Shield.

His stay in San Jose ended on January 7, 2014 when he was traded to Colorado Rapids in exchange for Atiba Harris. Colorado was not a good fit for Chavez. He played only 39 minutes for the club before being traded to Chivas USA on May 8, 2014 in exchange for Luke Moore.

e made his debut for Honduras in an August 2006 friendly match against Venezuela and has, as of July 2012, earned a total of 25 caps, scoring 2 goals. He has represented his country in 6 FIFA World Cup qualification matches and played at the 2009 and 2011 UNCAF Nations Cups as well as at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

MLS Supplemental Draft 2015

In the recent MLS Supplemental Draft, NYCFC added a handful of potential world class players to their roster.

Now, the MLS Supplemental Draft is unique in the North American sports world, and the best way to think about it is like this: The Supplemental Draft is the continuation of the SuperDraft. The Supplemental Draft consists of four rounds, which are called Rounds 1 through 4, but in many ways it is Rounds 3 through 6 of the SuperDraft.

However, unlike the SuperDraft, which includes all the glitz and glamour that anything "super" deserves, the Supplemental Draft is done via a conference call with all 19 clubs and the league. That's not to say there aren't guidelines, though.

The Supplemental Draft guidelines are as follows:

  • Each club designates one person who is authorized to make draft selections.
  • Clubs are permitted three minutes to make a selection during each round of the draft.
  • There is a three-minute break between rounds.
  • If a club fails to make a selection in the allotted time, the next club in order will be permitted to make its selection. The club that failed to make its selection will then be given the opportunity to immediately make its selection. If no selection is made, it will have to again wait until the next club in order makes its selection.
  • Each club is given one three-minute timeout.
  • More than two timeouts may not be used consecutively.

The Supplemental Draft allows for only players who have finished their college eligibility and been nominated by an MLS club, as well as youth internationals made available by MLS.

By its very nature, the Supplemental Draft is not where most of the blue-chip prospects are selected. But that's not to say there aren't more than a few Cinderella stories.

In fact, arguably MLS's greatest Cinderella story of all time started in the Supplemental Draft. San Jose's goal machine Chris Wondolowski, who won the MLS Golden Boot in 2010 and 2012, was taken in the fourth round of the 2005 Supplemental Draft.

Amazingly, he wasn't alone that year. Fellow fourth-rounders in 2005 include Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and Chicago Fire midfielder Jeff Larentowicz.

Other Supplemental Draft picks through the years include San Jose's Jason Hernandez (2005), New York's Kosuke Kimura (2007), New England's Chris Tierney (2008), and Philadelphia's Antoine Hoppenot (2012).

NYCFC selected the group of defensive midfielder Bruce Sassano, midfielder Nick Hutchinson, goalkeeper Thomas Lee and goalkeeper Shawn Fraser in the Supplemental Draft.
Nice couple of updates there, NYCFC look strong!

NYCFC secure McLaughlin loan

Today, NYCFC announced that they had agreed a deal to bring young Liverpool starlet Ryan McLaughlin to the Yankee Stadium on a season-long loan.

Liverpool signed 16-year old Ryan McLaughlin in the summer of 2011 from Glenavon F.C. on a three-year deal.

On 9 January 2014, McLaughlin was signed by Football League Championship side Barnsley F.C. on a 28-day loan deal and was given squad number 27. He made his club and senior career debut on 18 January against Blackpool in the Championship. On 29 January 2014 it was announced that McLaughlin sustained an injury that will keep him out for four weeks. Two days later his loan was extended until the end of the season.

McLaughlin has represented Northern Ireland at Under-16, Under-17 and currently at Under-19 and Under-21 level. He was called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad for a friendly against Finland on 15 August 2012 but was forced to withdraw due to a hip injury.

On 19 May 2014, he was once again called up to the senior squad for two friendly matches in South America. On 31 May 2014, he made his National Team debut as a substitute against Uruguay. McLaughlin became the first Liverpool player to appear for Northern Ireland since Elisha Scott 78 years previously.

He is the younger brother of Fleetwood Town right back, Conor McLaughlin.
