In this save with FC Basel my aim is to take this team, dominant in their own domestic league, to the dizzy heights of Champions League glory.

In order to do this I'm going to have to try and consistently reach the group stages of the Champions League, that's my minimum expectation every season. This will provide us with a good income, and should raise our profile in Europe. This in turn should allow us to be able to attract a high standard of players to the team. Pair this with our excellent youth training facilities and extensive youth recruitment will hopefully become a recipe for success.

***

Facilities

I asked the board if they could improve our youth facilities, one of the main philosophies of the club was to develop our own players, so the board were happy to oblige and give me what I wanted.

I also wanted the board to buy the stadium, this saves us £2.5m per year and will hopefully allow us to further improve our financial stance in the coming years.

Transfers In

At the time of writing this post I'm getting towards the end of my first season at the club. I won't give any spoilers about what has happened over the season so far, but with only 8 games to go both transfer windows have been and gone so I'll go through the in's and out's for both in this post.

André S(C) £1.4m from Atlético Mineiro

At the start of the game I wanted to add a little more depth to my attacking options. As you'll see when I show the tactics that I'm using although I'm only playing with a lone striker with one of my two strikers at the start being preferred as an inside forward it left me only with a single striker so André came in and added that much needed depth and has so far been worth the money spent to bring him in.

Lucas AM(R)/M(R) £1.1m from Real Madrid

I wanted to play with some attacking inside forwards and I felt this was something that was really lacking at the club and Lucas was offered to me by his agent. He was transfer listed at Real Madrid, my scouts raved about him and he was available for the measly price of £1.1m I could not refuse it especially with his small wage demands and bought him in. Nothing really stands out to me stats wise but he has a lot of good stats, if only a few outstanding but he has been one of my players of the season so far.

Matías Kranevitte DM/M(C) £5.25M from River Plate

Kranevitte was my only winter signing, I wanted a holding midfielder so that I was able to tweak my tactic slightly and sure up the defense a little. I scouted him and was massively impressed by those mental stats for a young player. His price tag was a little more than I perhaps wanted to play but most of that will be spent over the next 48 months so as long as he is a success for a few seasons to come, and I think he will be, then it'll be a decent transfer which will help us defensively especially against bigger European sides.

Transfers Out

Zdravko Kuzmanovic M(C)/DM £2.9m to Girondins Bordeaux

There was only really one notable transfer out of the club and that is Kuzmanovic. Yes he is a similar player to Kranevitte, however he prefers to play in a more typical central midfield role and not a defensive role. He also picked up a long term injury at the start of the game for about 4 months. He would have been one of my better midfielders if he didn't get injured but he just didn't get back into the side after coming back from injury and he wanted to leave. He never really made it into the team for us so we won't miss him.

There were some other minor outgoings during the two transfer windows but none that were of any real impact to the team. Mainly ageing players, or younger players who weren't going to break into the team.

***

Tactics

I've been using 2 tactics through the season, although for the latter half I've only really used the one.

This has been my main tactic since Kranevitte signed around halfway through the season.

Although I'm only playing with a lone striker, Kakitani out on the left has also been getting in on the goals whilst Lucas has been the main source of assists out on the right. Before this tactic was using an attacking midfielder but the choice to drop them back to a more defensive role which is now occupied by Kranevitte has worked well, it's tightened up the defense which I think will be crucial for European campaigns in the future.

My other tactic which I used early on during the season was this:

This was a much more attacking formation than the one I'm using now and I haven't really gone back to it since moving to my current one. There were never any issues scoring goals with this tactic but it wasn't quite what I was looking for defensively which is why I much prefer using the 4-1-2-2-1 formation I am now.

***

That's all for now, like I said I'm really close to the end of the season so I'll do a season update once the season is over.

Following the trophy presentation at The Stade de Suisse Wankdorf ESPN FC caught up with the Rotblau manager Gareth Townsend who had this to say on his teams remarkable 12-11 penalty shootout victory over fierce rivals Young Boys. "I'm delighted, to win in this fashion over one of your most bitter rivals is incredible. I have to admit there were times during the marathon shootout where I just couldn't watch anymore, the roar from our end of the stadium told me all I needed to know. It's going to take a little while to sink in but for now I'm just going to enjoy the rest of this tremendous occasion with my players, they've been fantastic all season and now they can soak it all up and celebrate their, our victory. They've really earned it!"

After reaching the previous two finals only to fall at the final hurdle fans of the Rotblau will be delighted to have finally gotten over their mini slump in finals.

Basel's Stadium Plans Shelved

Previously we reported that FC Basel manager Gareth Townsend had been successful requested that the board purchase St Jakubspark and as a result the club would be able to save £2.5m per annum. However the reports coming from Switzerland now are that the board have been forced to put their plans on hold due to financial restrictions.

Townsend was hoping to purchase the stadium to save money on yearly rent

Despite this clear setback for the young manager it isn't all doom and gloom since the board have decided to go ahead with plans to upgrade the youth facilities at the club. The chairman is said to be keen on the club developing their own players through the youth system and when Townsend came to him with this request it was something they saw eye to eye on and was quick to accept the request coming up with the £2.5m cost without the need to secure funding through a loan.

FC Basel should really start to see the benefits from these upgrades over the next few years when the quality of youngsters coming into the club improves. Us at World Soccer will certainly be interested to see how Basel bring them through and bed them into the first team.

Could these youngsters be the key to Champions League success for Switzerland, only time will tell

UEFA Champions League

Today we will be continuing our review of FC Basel’s 2014/15 campaign, it’s now the turn of the UEFA Champions League. The Rotblau entered at the third qualifying round and would have been expecting to at least reach the Group Stage of the competition.

Third Qualifying Round vs Omonoia

Turned out to be an easy victory for Basel after dominating the first leg at St Jakubspark they were able to take it a little easier away from home. Omonoia never really posed any real threat to Townsend’s side and their attacking options proved too much and they progressed easily to the playoff with a 6-2 aggregate win. Basel will face Portugal’s Sporting in the next round.

Basel responded brilliantly after going a goal down after the first leg. They could easily have let their heads drop and Sporting walk all over them during the second leg but they didn’t. Whatever Townsend had worked on in training and said in his prematch team talk clearly did the trick as they thrashed Sporting 6-0 at St Jakubspark to progress to the Group Stage with a 6-1 aggregate victory. It would have been disappointing for the Swiss champions to bow out at this stage and after this there will surely be some exciting matches to come.

Group Stage Draw

FC Basel
AS Roma
Rapid Wien

FC Basel’s reward for overcoming a first leg deficit against Sporting was to be drawn into a difficult Group C. In order to progress to the knockout stages FCB will need to get a result against either Italian heavyweights AS Roma or Portuguese champions Benfica, both of which will prove to be tough opposition for the Swiss side.

Some fantastic results against AS Roma ensured that Basel progressed through to the knockout stages where they were drawn against Manchester City. The draw could definitely have been kinder to the Rotblau, with players such as Sergio Aguero and David Silva to try and nullify it could prove difficult for the defence to deal with. Basel will be looking to their attacking stars such as Lucas and Kakitani to provide and score the goals to send them to the quarter finals.

A tough trip to the Etihad Stadium ultimately ended Basel’s European campaign. Unable to overturn the 4-0 deficit a good 3-3 draw at home meant that they could bow out with something to be proud of.

Having exceeded expectations in this seasons Champions League by reaching the knockout stages Townsend will surely be looking to repeat the feat again next time out.

Join us next time where we will review Basel’s 2014/15 Swiss Super League campaign.

Swiss Super League

Today ESPN FC review the 2014/15 Swiss Super League and present the award winners.

2014/15 Super League Champions

FC Basel

A season to remember for FC Basel who completed a domestic double beating Young Boys to the title. Townsend will be pleased that his side were able to wrap up the title with a nice points cushion to YB in second.

It was also a season to remember for Sion who were never expected to finish in the European places yet challenged YB all the way to the final day of the season for the final Champions League place. A draw with YB on the last day of the season meant that due to goal difference they would have to settle for the Europa League.

Zurich were seen as contenders for a European place at the start of the season but it turned out to be a disappointing season for them and after sacking manager Urs Meier and bringing in France and Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane they will be hoping for a much better season next time out.

Aarau will be hoping to bounce right back up after facing relegation in a battle which went right down to the final day of the season. Thun occupied the lone relegation spot for the majority of the season but a poor run of form in the last half meant that it was in fact Aarau that suffered the dreaded drop.

Team of the Season

Great season there and a very unique lay-out, I love it! Can't wait to see what happens next campaign.

Basel complete Peruzzi signing

Townsend has landed his main transfer target for the summer towards the end of last season he had made it clear that his main interest in the transfer market was to strengthen the right back position and he has done so early on in the window.

http://cdn01.pf.infobae.com/adjuntos/165/imagenes/012/433/0012433009.JPG
Gino Peruzzi becomes Basel’s first summer signing

Gino Peruzzi signs from Boca Juniors for a fee in the region of £6m with half of the money upfront and the other half in monthly instalments over the next 24 years.

Reports are that Peruzzi agreed a 4 year £20K a week deal with the Swiss champions which would make him the second highest paid player in the team.

With both Matias Kranevitte and André signing from River Plate and Atletico Mineiro respectively FCB fans will be hoping that their new man settles into the team as quickly as his South American counterparts.
Don't let Kranevitter go! He becomes into, singlehandedly one of the best DM's in the world over time!
Peruzzi is a great signing, I can see Basel turning into wonderkid central soon! :P
Pauker: He's already one of the best players at the club, seem's like he was worth every penny of the £5M i spent on him.

IWelshWizard: He's been really really good since I've got him. Funnily enough my scout has just recommended a certain Balanta, maybe you're right about wonderkid central

One for the future

Only a matter of days after unveiling right back Gino Peruzzi there has been yet more transfer activity at St Jakubspark. This time it’s a player for the future.

16 year old Justin Kluivert last night completed his transfer from Dutch club Ajax for a fee of £3.2m.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/10/12/1413143603819_wps_40_WEINGARTEN_GERMANY_MAY_20.jpg

“We were in need of a quality on the left flank for the future I have faith in Kakitani for the next few years but I just wanted to add a youngster into the mix who I think can develop into a real gem for the club for years to come.”

Our sources report that Townsend left the contract discussions to his Head of Youth Development and Kluivert agreed a 5 year deal earning £4.5k a week once he turns professional on his 17th birthday.

It is believed that Townsend will look to loan Kluivert out so that he can get exposure to first team football early on in his career.
