Thanks for all the support so far guys! Will probably only be posting once a day from tomorrow as I start back to work, so won't have as much time to play and or write! Thank you once again!

UEFA Europa League Group Stage Draw

http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af298/Mg1001/Olympique%20de%20Marseille%20Manager%20Story/Uploads/Grimaldi%20forum.jpg
Welcome to the Grimaldi Forum, here in Monte Carlo, for the Group Stage draw of the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League.

Friday 28th August 2015: Hello and welcome to the Grimaldi Forum for the draw for the Group Stage of the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League. The countdown to the final in Basel is on, and the two teams competing in the final at the end of the season, could well be drawn out of the four pots in this room. So without adieu, lets have a look at the 48 teams competing in this seasons competition.

COMPETITION SEEDINGS

GROUP STAGE DRAW

REACTION

Olympique de Marseille President Vincent Labrune: ”We are very happy with that draw. All three teams deserve a lot of respect from us, and all three will give us a very big challenge, but we are very much looking forward to taking trips to play FC Kobenhavn, Lech Poznan and Southampton.”

Olympique de Marseille Manager Christophe Galtier: ”Yes, yes, it is a nice draw, one that gives us a good chance of progressing from the group. All three games will give us a massive test, all three teams are very good sides and travelling to Eastern Europe is always difficult. We will keep one eye on the rest of the competition of course, there are some fantastic clubs in this competition, and hopefully we can meet one or two of them in the new year.”

An interesting draw. Seems doable. Nice idea with linking the pots!

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

Overall it has been an okay start to the season. Obviously we would have liked to have picked up more points against sides that will probably be down near the bottom of the table come the end of the season, and the defeat against Troyes was very hard to take, as we were very poor. However this team is a work in progress, and hopefully as they start to get used to my methods and tactics results will improve over the course of the season. Losing Michy Batshuayi and Romain Alessandrini were big blows, as was Loic Perrin but we are beginning to welcome all three of them, plus Remy Cabella back into the fold now, and hopefully they can help us move forwards next month with some positive performances.

SQUAD REPORT

On the face of it, we are very strong in goal. STEVE MANDANDA is the best goalkeeper at the club and has been fantastic in the Marseille goal since he joined from Le Havre in 2008, although he has made a few errors in the games he has played for the club so far this season. YOHANN PELE is a good back up keeper, as after a successful 18 month spell at Sochaux he joined Marseille in the summer and hopefully he can be reliable when and if he is called upon this season. Personally, having three goalkeepers in the squad is important to me, and with someone as NICOLAS DOUCHEZ on the market for free after his release by PSG, we may be looking at bringing him in.

Rating:
Mandanda is one of the best goalkeeper’s in the league and Pele would be first choice at quite a few of the clubs in Ligue 1 so 4 stars is very much deserved.

At full back we seem to be very strong. BRICE DJA DJEDJE and JAVI MANQUILLO are both good right backs. Manquillo is of course at Marseille on a two year loan deal from Atletico Madrid so the question is whether or not to give him first team football when Dja Djedje is the better right back at the minute. When you throw in to the equation that we also have MAURICIO ISLA, the competition at right back is very fierce. At left back, again we seem strong on paper, but PAOLO DE CEGLIE is much more suited to a left midfield role, so the on loan Juventus man may find his opportunities limited, especially if BENJAMIN MENDY develops into the player he should do, as he will be the first choice left back.

Rating:
Was torn between giving our full backs a 3 star rating or a 2 and a half rating, just because we only really have one left back who is a left back through and through, but De Ceglie will still hopefully do a job for us when asked. At right back, using Isla’s experience and ability would have been great but Dja Djedje and Manquillo are younger and playing them more consistently will hopefully be more beneficial for Marseille moving forward.

In the center of our defence we were rocked by Nicolas Nkoulou’s departure, and he will be a massive loss. However there is in theory a lot of quality still there. LOIC PERRIN has been added to the mix, and he will bring with him lots of experience and quality, and his suitability to the ball playing defender role is good news meaning we have at least one defender who can move the ball out from defence calmly and also quickly when we want to launch attacks. KARIM REKIK was bought in by the previous regime and hopefully we can make Man City regret allowing him to leave. Makelele rates ROLANDO quite highly however my confidence in the Portuguese defender has been rocked during the early parts of the season as he has made quite a few errors and his discipline has been quite poor. STEPHANE SPARAGNA was initially sent out on loan to AC Ajaccio but after Nkoulou’s departure, he was bought back to add more youth to the squad, and some cover if and when we need it. The other man who can play at centre back is Alaixys Romao, who adds some steel, although he is better at playing in defensive midfield, although with the options we have at defensive midfield he isn’t likely to get much game plan there.

Rating:
Would have loved to have given our central defenders a higher rating but a lot of the quality in the centre of our defence will be evident in the future. Loic Perrin and Rolando are both very highly rated but Rolando has not performed too well in the opening phases of the season, but has had to play as Karim Rekik has been filling in at left back after injuries to Benjamin Mendy and Paolo De Ceglie. Rekik looks like he is going to be a very good player, and has impressed wherever he has been asked to play. Sparagna hasn’t played much either but has been impressive when he has played and hopefully he can develop more and become a bit more of a valuable asset to this squad.

Our defensive midfielders will play a massive part in any success we have this season as they will need to protect our central defence. LASSANA DIARRA is a man full of experience and he has stepped up to the plate in the early phases of the season, and hopefully he can continue his fine form moving forwards. LUCAS SILVA is another player for the future, although that will be at Real Madrid unless we can secure his signing on a permanent basis. But so far he has excelled, barring one little error. Can also play a little bit further forward as a playmaker in the central midfield positions so if needed to he can be called upon.

Rating:
It is hard not to rate Lassana Diarra and Lucas Silva highly as both players are already playing well especially as new signings at the club. Lassana Diarra has been first choice so far but Lucas definitely has the quality to push him out of the team, especially if he continues to excel like he has done so far this season.

Whilst we may look strong in the centre of midfield, unfortunately the ratings are deceitful. Whilst MARVIN MARTIN and ABDELAZIZ BARRADA can play in the centre, both are much more suited to the attacking midfield role. Having said that both Martin and Barrada have been impressive when called upon to play in the centre so hopefully that can continue long into the season. ABOU DIABY could be a strong addition in the centre of midfield by the previous regime but he has so far been very injury prone and has missed a fair bit of action, although, again he has been impressive in the limited amount of game time he has made this season.

Rating:
Unfortunately we are lacking somewhat in the centre of midfield as Abou Diaby is our only recognised central midfielder. If we have the funds this may be something that needs addressing the January transfer window, although with Lucas Silva being able to play here, and Barrada being relatively good in a central midfield role, signing someone new may not necessarily be needed.

This is the area of the pitch where personally I think we are strongest. BOUNA SARR and GEORGES-KEVIN NKOUDOU are both young and look likely to become quality players in the future if they are given the time to develop. Both have been highly impressive whenever they played during the pre-season, Sarr grabbing a hat trick, and although game time in competitive matches has been limited so far they’re both likely to become quality members of our first team squad. ROMAIN ALESSANDRINI has been brilliant for Marseille since he arrived from Stade Rennais in the summer of 2014, and when he has played under my stewardship so far he has not failed to impress adding quality and class to proceedings up front. REMY CABELLA didn’t have the best of seasons last year at Newcastle and has been injured so far this season so hasn’t featured massively. As part of the deal that saw Florian Thauvin head the other way, hopefully Cabella can help replace the outgoing Thauvin and play a big part in our season from his preferred right win position. LUCAS OCAMPOS is a player that has been doubted as a future star for a while now but never really hit it off at AS Monaco despite them changing their approach last season to try and develop more youngsters. However this season whenever he has played out on the left or the right wing he has been fantastic and added a few goals during pre-season.

Rating:
Every player we have in these positions has the potential to be something special for Marseille this year. We have started the season with Lucas Ocampos on the right and Alessandrini on the left but hopefully when Remy Cabella returns from injury he can slot easily on to the right flank. Having said that, I do feel as though it could be crucial for this team to use the likes of Nkoudou and Sarr so that they can become the players theyre forecast to become as in 2/3 years time they could be the stars of the show.

Overall I think we have two very good forwards in this team. MICHY BATSHUAYI has the potential to be something special, he’s young and is enthusiasm should be able to help him score a hatful of goals for us. Hopefully his youth will also see him be able to cope with the demands of the role we want him to play in this team, and hopefully he can adapt to be a quality player in those positions. As for MAURO ZARATE his work rate in the games he has played for us so far has been excellent and although he hasn’t managed to find the net in the Ligue 1 games we’ve played so far, he has come close on numerous occasions and his goal tally will start rising soon I have no doubts about it. He’s come here from a poor spell at West Ham where he has barely played so for him to come in and play as well as he has been doing after a limited amount of football is very commendable. Only have two strikers is quite concerning though, as already Michy Batshuayi has picked up an injury and missed games, so it would be nice to have another striker available. Now that the transfer window has shut, one player who is available on a free is former Tottenham striker EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR. He previously played for AS Monaco and FC Metz in Ligue 1 too, and it was this spell in Ligue where he scored 33 goals which really saw him break out on the European scene, so he is somebody that we may well pursue in the coming months to boost our options up front.

Rating:
I firmly believe that Michy Batshuayi and Mauro Zarate could score a lot of goals for us this season as they are both very good players, and Michy Batshuayi has the potential to develop into something extra special. The rating for our forwards would have been much higher however if we had an extra man to call on, which is why bringing someone like Adebayor into the club could boost us a lot, as he has a track record of scoring goals both in Ligue 1 and in the Premier League.

Overall Squad Rating:
We have a very good squad here in general. We do lack for reinforcements in soon area. I would have preferred for a more solid central defence, as Rolando has been somewhat disappointing in the early parts of the season but with the injuries suffered to Mendy and De Ceglie, Rolando has had to play with Rekik being forced to be deployed out on the left wing. In midfield though we look pretty solid in the defensive midfield roles and out wide in the wing positions. Another central midfielder would be a useful addition, although if Marvin Martin and Abdelaziz Barrada can step up then we could be quite strong. Again, up front we are good but we probably do need another forward which is why Emmanuel Adebayor is being looked at.

Nation: France
Division: Ligue 1
Manager: Christophe Galtier
Captain: Steve Mandanda
Key Players: Steve Mandanda, Loic Perrin, Lassana Diarra, Remy Cabella, Michy Batshuayi
European Titles: 1 UEFA Champions League (1992-1993)
Domestic Titles: 10 Ligue 1
Fans Verdict: ”I’m happy with this group. It’s not going to be easy, not at all, FC Kobenhavn always offer a good test to the top European sides when they compete in the Champions League, but hopefully we’ll be able to come out on top in these ties. Southampton are a fantastic side with a fantastic manager and there position as the 4th tier side in this group is very misleading. Trips to Eastern Europe are never easy and Lech will be a difficult side to face, but hopefully we can get the points we need to progress out of this group.” Predicted Finish: 1st.

FC KOBENHAVN

Nation: Denmark
Division: Superliga
Manager: Stale Solbakken
Captain: Thomas Delaney
Key Players: Daniel Amartey, Thomas Delaney, Nicolai Jorgensen, Andreas Cornelius
European Titles: None
Domestic Titles: 10 Superliga
Fans Verdict: ”This isn’t an easy group at all, and personally I would have liked for a better one. We’ve shown we can compete against big teams in the past though so hopefully we can get something against the likes of Southampton and Marseille. The games against Lech are going to be huge and I do think we’re gonna need 6 from 6 to stand any chance of pushing Marseille and Southampton for a place in the knockout stages.” Predicted Finish: 3rd

LECH POZNAN

Division: Ekstraklasa
Manager: Jan Urban
Captain: Gergo Lovrencsics
Key Players: Niklas Zulciak, Denis Thomalla, Gergo Lovrencsics
European Titles: None
Domestic Titles: 7 Ekstraklasa
Fans Verdict: ”Apparently, according to UEFA we are ranked as a better side than Southampton in this group, so if UEFA are correct, we should finish third here. I’m probably not the only one who knows that that probably won’t happen and who knows that we’re going to struggle to get anything out of this group. A shock win against Marseille at the Stade Velodrome though would be fantastic! We can dream right?” Predicted Finish: 4th

SOUTHAMPTON
http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/af298/Mg1001/Olympique%20de%20Marseille%20Manager%20Story/Uploads/Southampton.png

Nation: England
Division: Barclays Premier League
Manager: Ronald Koeman
Captain: Jose Fonte
Key Players: Jose Fonte, Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Jay Rodriguez, Sadio Mane
European Titles: None
Domestic Titles: None
Fans Verdict: ”Considering where we were a few years, just to be in this stage of a European competition is amazing and every step of the journey has been brilliant so far. And now in the group stage we’ve got a great draw, and every single one of us, is delighted to be given the chance to go to Copenhagen and especially the Stade Velodrome. We’re not taking anything for granted in this competition, so if we don’t qualify we won’t be too disappointed but I am fairly confident we can beat the likes of FC Kobenhavn and Lech to get enough points to progress. Whatsmore I am fairly confident, that despite the losses we’ve suffered in the summer we can still give Marseille a damn good game, and maybe pull off a shock.” Predicted Finish: 2nd

Overall, September has been a much better month. Two victories, a draw and a defeat is definitely progress for this side and it has coincided with a change in tactic from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3, and utilising Lucas Ocampos and Remy Cabella as a winger and an inside forward. The victory over Lyon was fantastic, especially to put them to the sword in such rapid fashion. The defeat to Bastia was disappointing especially as our second half performance merited a better scoreline. To be 7th after 8 games, when we were 12th after 4 is much more pleasing to look at. Although the gap between ourselves and surprise package Stade de Reims is 5 points at the moment, there is still a lot of football to play and I am confident we can close that gap. In terms of our Europa League campaign, it was our best performance of the season (pre-Lyon) and it was gutting to concede right at the death like we did, but a draw is still a positive result and hopefully we can build on it next month with games against Southampton and Lech Poznan.

really nice updates man, and a decent draw in Europe - good luck!
Thanks man, means a lot, glad you're enjoying them! Got nearly a whole seasons worth of material written up now so updates are going to keep coming!
A decent month mate but must be devastated by that damn lat equalizer to Kobenhaven
Thanks mate, much better in terms of performances, but the draw was sooo frustrating, we should have been a couple of goals up at half time so to draw was gutting!

Fans Verdict: ”Marseille are a good side and will give us a very good game. But I do think we are the strongest side in the league at the minute, and I don’t think they’ll be able to cope with the likes of Di Maria, Ibrahimovic and co.” Predicted Result: 3-0 PSG

Fans Verdict: ”What can you say about Paris Saint-Germain that doesn’t make you sound jealous. They’re squad at the minute is filled with world class talent. Ibrahimovic only gets older by number, and his quality doesn’t ever seem to drop off, and now that he has the service of Di Maria as well as the other world class players they’ve got I can’t see PSG doing anything other than winning at least the Ligue 1 title again, and I fear this match will just be another victory in their march to the title.” Predicted Result: 2-0 PSG.

The progress within this squad this month has been evident. If you take the two defeats at the start of the month against Southampton and PSG out of the equation we have been fantastic and the way the team played in the games against FC Lorient and FC Nantes has been fantastic. Our attacking players are really starting to come to the fore now, and are starting to chip in with the goals, which have propelled us up the league and into 6th with a game in hand on 4th placed Renne who are 5 points ahead. Hopefully we can keep working on closing that gap. As for the Europa League, obviously the defeat at Southampton was hard to take, they were simply the better side and deserved the three points at St. Mary’s. As for the Lech game, we were fantastic for 60 minutes and then it all went to pieces, our defending was poor and really, based on the last half an hour of the match, Lech were unlucky not to come away with at least a point. As it stands though, we’re level on points with FC Kobenhavn so another positive result against Lech in our next game and hopefully we can jump into a qualification place.

Here at L’Equipe we were lucky enough to be granted access to the Marseille training ground on the 4th November, as the club officially announced their newest signing, at a press conference organised by Club President Vincent Labrune. Released by PSG during the summer transfer window, Marseille manager Christophe Galtier stated that the opportunity to bring Nicolas Douchez in on a free transfer was too good of an opportunity to turn down. The player and his new manger then joined us for a quick interview.

L’EQUIPE: Welcome to Marseille, Nicolas. Christophe what inspired you to bring in a keeper with such vast experience as Nicolas?

GALTIER: I think that question answers itself. Nicolas has been there and done it all, and playing for PSG for the last couple of years has given him an amazing amount of experience at, frankly, one of the biggest clubs on the continent now, and hopefully he can bring that here and help the lads here.

L’EQUIPE: Nicolas, you won 9 trophies during your time at PSG, have you seen anything at this club so far that makes you think you can add to that tally here at Marseille?

DOUCHEZ: Yes of course, I’ve seen a lot! This club is a massive club, everyone knows that, it’s one of the most supported clubs in the country, with fantastic facilities and a very good squad, with a lot of youth mixed in with some experience. Hopefully, coming towards the end of my career, the younger lads can come to me about anything and I can help them learn as we move forwards.

L’EQUIPE: Okay then, in terms of this current season, the first game this club plays whilst you’re here is against Lech on Thursday in the Europa League. The club didn’t have the best of starts but seem to have picked it up now, and the same seems to have happened in the league too. With this in mind what do you think Marseille can achieve this season?

DOUCHEZ: Anything is possible to be honest, we might not have had the best of starts this year but the manager is starting to work his magic on the squad and I think we could achieve whatever we wanted to. The Europa League is well within our reach for next season, so having another season in Europe would be great, but I think the minimum that any of us want to achieve is a place in the Champions League. I know I wasn’t here, but the club came so close last season, so getting into it next year would be fantastic.

L’EQUIPE: Finally then Christophe, how big a part will Nicolas be playing in any success that Olympique de Marseille enjoy this year?

GALTIER: Nicolas knows he’s going to have a massive part to play. He knows that Steve Mandanda is a fantastic goalkeeper and Nicolas knows he’s going to have to work really hard to displace him. But a player like Nicolas doesn’t just have an impact on the pitch. I hope he won’t mind me saying it, but Steve is younger than Nicolas, and hopefully he can help Steve if an issue ever arises. Moving forward Nicolas is going to have a big part to play, just like every player at this club.
