Schäfer Makes Good Of Brazil Opportunity

Christian Schäfer's Brazil Side Secured Two Victories In His First Two Games In Charge

It has been all rosy for Christian Schäfer in his new role as Brazil manager so far, winning two games out of two during his first international window in friendlies against Russia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. The first game saw Schäfer return to Germany where Brazil faced Russia at the Allianz Arena in Munich, before then travelling to the Emirates Stadium in London to face Bosnia six days later. Schäfer implemented unique tactical systems in each game as he sampled his new squad and experimented with their abilities on the pitch.

Brazil captain Neymar stole all the headlines once more, scoring three times over the course of the two games. This takes his tally to 93 goals in 134 international appearances, a truly incredible record. Goalkeeper Flávio and full-back Jonathan were debutants against Russia, while central defender Ronaldo scored his first ever goal for his country at the Allianz Arena.

vs Russia (31/08/2022)

Brazil's first game of the Schäfer era came against Russia at the Allianz Arena in an international friendly. Critics and fans alike were surprised to see Brazil line-up in a very unorthodox 3-4-2-1 formation, a team shape that has not been seen much of in the footballing world in recent years. No matter what formation was picked, an attacking trio of Neymar, Oscar and Malcom was sure to cause excitement.

It did not take long for the Seleção to score the opening goal, putting an early stamp on the game. Neymar's free-kick from the right hand side was whipped in to the penalty area with ferocity and Brazilian defender Ronaldo got his head on to the end of it to power the ball low past Russian goalkeeper Lodygin to mark Christian Schäfer's first game in charge with an early goal.

Dória very nearly doubled Brazil's advantage after 18 minutes. Neymar took a quick free-kick to pick out Thiago Maia in the box. The holding midfielder teed up Dória who's shot cannoned off the onrushing Lodygin and away from danger.

Brazil secured their second goal of the game just before the half-hour mark in fortunate circumstances. Wing-back Jorge easily dispossessed Roman Arkhipov, playing a short pass to Jonílson who in turn lofted the ball over the Russian defence. Vitaly Lystsov looked set to clear the ball until he miscued his effort, allowing the chasing Malcom to steal possession and slip the ball in to the Russian goal to double Brazil's advantage.

Russia clawed their way back in to the game, however, as they entered a spell of domination. Pecheritsa's finely struck volley forced an acrobatic save out of Ederson. Poor marking on behalf of the Brazilian defence allowed Arkhipov's back-post cross to be tapped in by Georgy Kostenko, with a minute remaining of the first half.

Russia looked to have leveled the game on the hour mark as Denis Kazakov squirmed passed a multitude of challenges before striking the post, and then seeing his second effort expertly tipped away by Ederson.

It was to be Schäfer's, and Brazil's, day and it was Neymar, the captain, who had the final say. Substitute Wendell powered in a cross from the left which was not fully cleared by the Russian defenders. The ball fell kindly to Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer, who powered a half-volley which whizzed in to the far corner, sealing the victory for Schäfer's Samba Squad.

Alan Dzagoev (Russia) 8.8

Brazil Milestones:
  • Christian Schäfer's first game in charge of Brazil.
  • Flávio (GK) made his Brazil debut when he came on as a sub in the 75th minute.
  • Jonathan (WBR) made his Brazil debut when he came on as a sub sin the 75th minute.
  • Malcom (ST) scored his 30th Brazil goal.
  • Ronaldo (DC) scored his 1st Brazil goal.

vs Bosnia & Herzegovina (06/09/2022)

Christian Schäfer made three changes from the side that defeated Russia. Thiago Maia picked up a hernia during training prior the fixture, and Dynamo Dresden attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino was called up to the squad as a result. Casemiro took Maia's place in the starting line-up, while Lima and Russo came in for Jonílson and Malcom respectively.

It took thirty-five minutes for Brazil to open the scoring. Jorge's cross-field ball was controlled well by Hulk who teed up for Oscar for a first-time shot inside the box. The Chelsea star saw his shot blocked by defender Jozo Spikic, but the rebound fell kindly for Brazil's captain Neymar, who tapped home to score his second goal in as many games.

Oscar had an opportunity to double Brazil's lead before half-time when Lima slipped him in after a clever quick free-kick from Neymar. However, Oscar's shot was tipped away for a throw-in by Asmir Begovic. The resulting throw represented another opportunity for Brazil to score as Russo found space inside the box to power a strike in to the opposite corner. However, Begovic once again produced a theatrical save to deny Schäfer's side a second goal.

It was the scorer of the first goal who looked the most likely to produce something spectacular, and Neymar broke from kick-off of the second half through Bosnia's defence but his rasping strike from twenty yards out was beaten away by the Bosnian goalkeeper.

Neymar did, however, find the back of the net once more, as he fired a first time shot in to the bottom right corner from the fifteen yards out, following excellent link-up play between Casemiro and Lima, to secure yet another victory for Brazil.

Bosnia almost found a way back in to the game with five minutes remaining as Djerlek teed up Prcic at the edge of the box. However, the latter's ferocious drive was parried away by Ederson, but only as far as Djerlek. The Bosnian looked certain to score, but Ederson was on hand once more to protect his goal, producing a masterclass save to keep a clean sheet for him and his team mates.

Hulk (Brazil) 9.0

Next International Break

The next international break will see the Superclásico fixture against Argentina be played. The tie will be played in "La Bombonera" in Argentina this year. This will be Argentina's second Superclásico since Lionel Messi retired from international football, with Nicolás Otamendi now the captain of La Albiceleste. A friendly away to Saudi Arabia will follow the Superclásico, and allow for more tactical experimentation. The Superclásico, however, will be considered a must-win game, and Schäfer's first taste of football's box-office spectacle.

Brazil Squad: October 2022

Christian Schäfer has made three changes to his Brazil squad ahead of his second international window in charge of Brazil. This international window will include the Superclásico de las Américas. Central defender Dória has been replaced by the in-form Marlon of Bayer Leverkusen, while Sporting CP's central midfielder Bruno Paulista comes in for Jonílson. Bayer Leverkusen's 24 year old striker Wesley Santos receives his first ever call up to the Brazil squad, as he replaced Biro. Thiago Maia is the only injury worry, but is expected to recover from a hernia he picked up a month ago to be able to play against Argentina.

With Wesley Santos in line to make his first appearance for Brazil, Schäfer's squad boasts an average age of 26.35, an older side to that which he entrusted last time out. Neymar need just seven more goals to reach a centenary of Brazil strikes, and is now just 10 appearances away (134) from breaking Cafú's appearance record for Brazil (143).

Key Players

Once again, Neymar will be expected to carry his nation to glory. The Superclásico will be a chance for Neymar to stake his claim for the FIFA Ballon d'Or, and to give Brazil an unexpected victory. Neymar scored three goals in his last two appearances to bring him one step closer to reaching a centenary of Brazil goals. A goal against Argentina would, of course, prove to be one of the more memorable moments in his catalogue of historical strikes.

Schalke wing-back Hulk proved to be an important player in the last set of internationals. The twenty-three year old has been in great form for club and country recently and has proven to be a worthwhile presence on the pitch. His physical qualities make him a strong asset to have on the flanks, while his defensive ability provides strong cover for the back three which his manager is likely to field.

Chelsea legend Oscar started both fixtures last time out and has proven to be an influential figure for Brazil. The attacking midfielder possesses fantastic creativity, and shows great intelligence on the pitch. Now thirty-one years of age, Oscar is reaching the twilight years of his career and a solid performance against Argentina would be required in order to keep his place in the side for next year's Copa América. Can he produce the goods?

International Fixtures

Up first is the Superclásico. If Christian can win this, he will have sent out a strong message to the rest of the world that Brazil is back. The friendly against Saudi Arabia will be an opportunity for the fringe players to stake a claim for more game time.

MJK46, yeah he's a great player to have in the squad as he offers a great variety of defensive talent. While he's more comfortable at WBR, he's also brilliant at DC too!

Kaká: Moment Of Truth For Seleção

Kaká Urges Brazil Players To Defeat Their Great Rivals

06/10/2022

2002 World Cup winner Kaká has spoken to Sky Sports reporter Lewie Griffin about Brazil's prospects in the upcoming Superclásico fixture against Argentina. Kaká believes that the coming years will prove to be the most important for the Seleção if they are to return to the dizzy heights of the past.

Kaká: "The Superclásico is always an exciting fixture. Ever since it was founded in 2011, it has produced some very memorable clashes. The winner claims the bragging rights over the other for a whole year. It is a must-win game for both sides, and both sides contest it like no other game matters.

For Brazil, the next few years are vital. It is looking like the current crop of stars could prove to be the last remnants of a golden age of Brazil. In the last few years, there have only been a handful of true star players for Brazil. Neymar, of course, is the stand-out man in yellow, while Coutinho, Oscar and Marquinhos seem to be the only truly world class players. Thiago Maia will hit those heights soon enough, but there are not many other players coming true.

It has been fifteen years since Brazil last won a major trophy, and next year's Copa América may be the last chance for Neymar and the other top players to compete in a major competition for Brazil. Neymar, Coutinho and Oscar are all in their thirties now and these are their final years for Brazil. It is up to them to leave a legacy worth mentioning. If they don't do it, I cannot picture anybody else lifting trophies for Brazil. The quality is just not there at the moment, sadly."

Having played over four hundred times for A.C. Milan and Real Madrid, and lifting the UEFA Champions League title in the process, Kaká is no stranger to European football, and he believes that the philosophies which Christian Schäfer has brought with him from Germany will help strengthen Brazil's chances in major competitions.

Kaká: "Interestingly enough, this is the first time ever that Brazil have had a foreign manager, but I do believe that Christian Schäfer is worthy of such a title. Christian is well-known for the defensive philosophies which he installed at Dynamo Dresden, and went on to win the Champions League with. These defensive philosophies are synonymous with European football, and they would benefit a team like Brazil. Brazil is known for its attacking qualities, not its defensive ones. I am certain that Christian will verse the players in how to defend properly, something which these players have not done so well before he arrived.

This is Christian's first venture in to international management so it is difficult to judge whether he is suited to it or not. If he can bring his ideas across to the players and keep them playing well, the side will be a tough one to face in major competitions. The next few years under Christian Schäfer could potentially be very bright ones, but only if the players take to him and he takes to his new role."

Debut Goal Secures Superclásico For Brazil

Debutant Wesley Santos Becomes Brazil Hero With Decisive Goal

Brazil claimed Superclásico success against Argentina courtesy of a dream debut goal from striker Wesley Santos. Argentina proved unable to reply to Brazil's opener, and the Seleção claimed victory over the greatest rivals. In Brazil's other game of the international window, Brazil put Saudi Arabia to the sword in a crushing victory.

vs Argentina (08/10/2022)

It was always going to be a lively game but despite Argentina being favourites prior to the game, it was the Brazilians who created the first chance. Two and half minutes in to the game, Philippe Coutinho came within a whisker of scoring. From a throw-in on the right, Coutinho controlled the ball on his chest and spun away from his marker, Nicolás Bacolla, before baring down on goal. However, his drive from eight yards out was knocked out for a corner by Argentina goalkeeper Lucas Morales.

The rest of the first half was ground out in a possession battle, with both sides cancelling each other out. However, the second half burst in to life, and Neymar's dipping volley from distance was acrobatically tipped over after the hour mark.

It was then Argentina's turn to strike, and Paulo Dybala's free-kick from twenty-five yards out was tipped on to the bar by Ederson. The rebound was then smothered by the Brazilian goalkeeper before substitute Mauro Icard could poke in the rebound.

Brazil had a new debutant in Wesley Santos when he came on for Oscar in the 65th minute, and the Bayer Leverkusen was soon in the thick of the action. Jorge did well to pick him out with a cross from the left but the striker's half-volley was blocked by Leonel Cardozo.

Philippe Coutinho almost broke the deadlock when the ball broke to him 25 yards out. Liverpool's midfield magician struck a tremendous swerving first-time effort which cannoned off the underside off the crossbar and away from danger. Brazil had been exerting a lot of pressure on Argentina, and it was only a matter of time before the deadlock would be broken.

Indeed, just a minute later, Brazil did take the lead. Argentina goalkeeper Lucas Morales' poor pass to central defender Darío Neira was picked off by debutant Wesley Santos and with the goal at his mercy, Brazil's striker made no mistake in giving his side the lead with just ten minutes remaining.

Santos' goal proved to be the decisive one as Brazil held on to win the Superclásico, and make a real statement of intent for the future!

Jorge (Brazil) 7.8

Brazil Milestones:
  • Wesley Santos made his debut for Brazil, coming on as a 62nd minute substitute.
  • Wesley Santos scored his 1st goal for Brazil.

  • vs Saudi Arabia (11/10/2022)

*EDIT* Saudi had 5 shots, not 95.... accidental graphic-making error :P

Brazil made seven changes to the side which started against Argentina, with Ederson, Hulk, Wallace and Ronaldo the only players to keep their places in the side. Debut hero Wesley Santos earned his first start for Brazil in a make-shift attack, with Malcom and Felipe Anderson taking to the wings.

It took no longer than nine minutes for Brazil to open the scoring, but it was not with their usual grace. Wesley Santos' effort was parried by goalkeeper Hani Al-Salem. The goalkeeper then denied Malcom's rebound effort, but Felipe Anderson was on hand to score on Brazil's third time of asking. This was Anderson's first goal for his country.

Brazil kept up the pressure, and Malcom's effort was saved following an intricate through ball from Wendell. Wesley Santos then picked out Wendell in the box and after beating his marker, the wing-back shot was deflected just wide of goal. Wesley Santos was involved once more as his first-time shot from the edge of the box was tipped on to the post by Al-Salem.

Lima grabbed his first Brazil goal with a curling effort from just inside the box after Casemiro teed him up, putting Brazil firmly in the driving seat. Al-Salem produced two top-class saves to deny Felipe Anderson and Wallace before half-time as Brazil looked to make a meal of Saudi Arabia.

Brazil earned a penalty when Arif Al-Qarni handled the ball inside the box and Neymar, who had come off the bench, rolled the ball in to the net to score his 94th goal for Brazil. Wesley Santos then gave Brazil their fourth goal as he pounced on a rebound in the box to score his second goal in as many games.

Saudi Arabia did pull one goal back, however, as Waleed Al-Ahwas turned home a cross to give his side a consolation goal.

    Fabinho (Brazil) 9.0

    Brazil Milestones:
  • Felipe Anderson scored his 1st goal for Brazil.
  • Lima scored his 1st goal for Brazil.

  • Next International Break

Brazil will play two friendlies at the Emirates Stadium in London during November when they face Mexico and Jamaica. These games will prove to be good opportunities for Brazil's fringe players to showcase their talents, while Neymar is now just six goals away from reaching a century of Brazil goals.

Fantastic start continues mate, keep it up!

Poor Saudi's ... 95 shots on goal with only 1 goal... I am sure I have felt like this has happened to me from time to time!

Nice wins and against the noisy rivals Argentina as well, perfect.
