UPDATE 6 – Season 2020/21

Transfer Round Up

IN

Life in the Championship wasn’t going to be easy and despite back-to-back promotions there were no thoughts on our mind for three in a row. So we had to strengthen in most areas, or add depth to areas that were lacking. Two new strikers arrived as Dylan Mackin arrived fresh from his free scoring season with Brechin, and Jordan Allan came in on a free transfer. Lee Penrice, a young centre back, came in for free after his release by Celtic along with another centre back in Scott McMann who arrived at the club for £23,000. Joao Ribeiro came in on loan from St Mirren before requesting it be terminated only half way through. Two wingers came in also as Jamie Frost and Jack Whittaker came in for a combined £17,000.

Competition Progress

Challenge Cup

First Round

New signing Dylan Mackin continued his form from his Brechin City days in this early season fixture as he bagged a brace to help us overcome Kilmarnock 2-0 at home. Kilmarnock had just been relegated into the Championship from the Premiership so this gave me confidence for the season ahead.

Second Round

St Mirren, another Championship side, proved stiffer opposition than Kilmarnock as the brushed us aside in a 3-1 win for the away side. We went in level at the break however just 2 minutes after that an OG put us behind once more and St Mirren didn’t look back from there.

League Cup

First Round

Once again we would meet with Stranraer and we would again come out on top despite a shaky first half. 1-0 down at the break we came out swinging to level the game after 47 minutes and Jack Whittaker would net the decider 12 minutes later seeing us progress to the second round.

Second Round

Despite our best efforts Raith Rovers, of the Premier League, would prove too strong in this second round tie. An early goal courtesy of Mackin put us ahead but poor concentration led to a Raith equaliser just 5 minutes later. Raith would then take the lead after just over an hour but we fought back and took the tie to extra time. Aaron Muirhead netted the only goal of extra time with 2 minutes to go to ensure the upset was off the table.

Scottish Cup

Third Round

The third round match against Brechin turned out to be a routine win as a wonder goal from Giuseppe Capuano put us in the drivers seat with Dylan Mackin adding to that goal with 18 minutes to go.

Fourth Round

We faced Stranraer AGAIN and came out on top once more with a single goal being enough to separate the two sides. It could’ve been more however we weren’t clinical enough and failed to take the numerous chances which came our way.

Fifth Round

A fifth round tie with Falkirk awaited in what was a really nerve wracking game. We had our backs against the wall for most of the game and snatched the win with a late winner from Scott Lochhead.

Quarter Final

A Scottish Cup Quarter Final, who would’ve thought. Sadly this would be where our run would come to an end as Partick Thistle’s early goal put them firmly in control. We couldn’t create any chances and paid for that as Stefan Goodman added to Steven Lawless’ opener to give Thistle a 2-0 win.

Ladbrokes Championship

January 1st

Results

The season actually started off pretty well considering the expectations being that we would go down without a fight. 7 points from our opening 5 games was a good foundation for the season and a 5 game unbeaten run during October and November gave us hope of staying up. This was followed by 4 games without a win however, but we would finish the year on a high with a win and a draw against Dunfermline and Ross County respectively.

League Table

This meant that at the New Year we were sitting 7th in the table, 10 points from Falkirk in the automatic relegation place. We were actually closer to the promotion play-off places than we were the relegation place but we were just the 2 points from the relegation play off place. A big second half to the season awaited..

End of Season

Results

The post January 1st results don’t look good on paper with just 3 wins to our name. The going became tough and scoring goals was a real problem for us, would it be enough to stay up?

League Table

It was! We managed to avoid being automatically relegated AND avoid the relegation play-off too which was a bonus. 2 points ahead of Queen of the South and 5 ahead of Falkirk with what turned out to be the worst goal difference in the league, but we would accept that as we stayed up!!

Next season will of course be tough once more but we hope to stay in the division again. There are some bigger teams in the division at the moment such as Motherwell, Kilmarnock etc so it’s a tough league no doubt about it.

With staying in the division as well as a run to the Quarter Final of the Scottish Cup, I would class this as yet another successful season and hope for another one next term.

Nice job avoiding the drop there is quite the step up from League 1 to the Championship as most teams go from part time to professional so you did well to stay up. Now to press on for next month

UPDATE 7 – Season 2021/22

Transfer Round Up

IN

There were a few new faces at the club this term as we looked to improve on last seasons 8th placed finish and push up the table. I wont go through them all however I will mention the ones who went on to play a key role this season. David Craddock became our new number one when he arrived from Stirling for £14,500 and Ross Matthews would become a key player out wide after his switch from Alloa. Jordan Ross became our new right back for the starting 11 while Andy Anderson made the midfield his own. Conner Duthie would bring goals to the side as we looked up the table..

OUT

A fair few players left again this season, mostly on free transfers except for two players, Reece Lowdon and Lewis MacPherson, who went out on loan for the year. Gareth Watson had been our first choice keeper for a fair few seasons however he rejected all contract offers we put down and moved on.

Competition Progress

Challenge Cup

First Round

We would face Championship counterparts Kilmarnock in this first round tie and I was expecting a tough game however it didn’t turn out to be this way. Andy Anderson put in a dominant display and grabbed himself a double to give us a 2-0 win. A thoroughly dominant performance by ourselves gave us confidence ahead of the league season.

Second Round

Stranraer. Again. Is there ever a season where we don’t meet them at some point? Anyway, they gave us a shock early in the game by going ahead through Jordyn Sheerin however we fought back and began to get hold of the ball and dominate. Lochhead equalised 10 minutes after Stranraer’s opener and Jack Whittaker put us ahead after 54 minutes. It took until the 81st minute to seal the game but Jordan Allan did just that with a close range effort as we progressed to the third round.

Third Round

A pretty dull 3rd round tie would end in a narrow 1-0 victory against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank. Jordan Allan stepping up to the plate again to seal another cup victory.

Semi Final

Alloa would be our opposition in the Semi-Final and they gave us a tough game however Ross Matthews found space in behind the defence and was found by an Andy Anderson pass to get the vital goal of the game. We were off to the final..

Final

Cowdenbeath stood between ourselves and cup glory in what turned out to be a very exciting game. They would take the lead after 15 minutes but lost concentration as we pulled level just 3 minutes later. A Logan Davie own goal would take them into half time infront so if we were to win, we were going to have to do it the hard way. Conner Duthie netted from the edge of the box 5 minutes after the restart and just 7 minutes after that, Dylan Mackin who had come on at half time, netted the all important goal.

WE WON THE CUP!!

League Cup

First Round

Ayr United would be our opponents in the League Cup First Round and a tough opponent they would be. Scott Pittman, a player I had tried to sign, put them ahead after 38 minutes however we fought back quickly as Ross Matthews netted the equaliser after 40 minutes. Whittaker would bag the winner with just over an hour to play and we were through to the second round.

Second Round

Motherwell would be our next opposition and we already knew that they were a good side given their league form. They would race into a 3-0 lead at half time and there was no real way back from that. Ross Matthews pulled one back but Gary Oliver would restore their 3 goal lead with 16 minutes left to play. We would pull another back through an own goal however it wasn’t enough and we were out of the League Cup!

Scottish Cup

Third Round

Ross County in the Scottish Cup Third Round was a game I didn’t really know what to expect given their fluctuating league form. We did take the lead however, through Scott Lochhead but they fought back with Callum Paton levelling it up 10 minutes before the break. Dylan Mackin scored the winner with 25 minutes left to play and on we went in the Scottish Cup.

Fourth Round

We managed to get ourselves a somewhat favourable draw in the Fourth Round as we played Clyde. A routine win was expected and a routine win was what we got through a brace from Conner Duthie and Jordan Allan added a third with just over 20 minutes to go.

Fifth Round

We would play Inverness of the Premier League next and it wouldn’t be as routine as the previous round. Despite taking the lead after 39 minutes, we seemed to have some sort of meltdown 5 minutes either side of half time in which we would concede 4 goals. We couldn’t really recover from that and so we were out of the Scottish Cup.

Ladbrokes Championship

January 1st

Results

We played 24 games between the start of the season and January 1st and I think they went pretty well. We picked up some solid wins and a few draws against the bigger sides in the league such as Partick Thistle.

League Table

Picking up 10 wins and 6 draws from our 24 games so far saw us sit in 5th place going into the business end of the season. Just the 2 points behind Livingston in 4th and just 6 from 1st placed Motherwell we were in with a real shout of Play-Offs or, dare I say it, winning the league. Being 15 points from the relegation Play-Off place was the main aspect however, as this gave us a very comfortable gap and we could look up the table rather than down.

End of Season

Results

Results in the second portion of the season really didn’t go so well. It started very very poorly as we went 7 games without a win. The 6-5 defeat to Cowdenbeath was a game which in all honesty, I had no idea what was happening..

Form did pick up as we ground out 3 1-0 victories in the last 5 games of the season as well as a comfortable 4-1 win over Forfar. Did the bad run hinder our league hopes, or even Play-Off hopes?

League Table

Yes it did, sadly. Motherwell held onto their top spot and deservedly would be automatically promoted. We didn’t even manage to get into the Play-Offs finishing 3 points from Partick Thistle who got the last Play-Off place. Queen of the South won the Play-Offs and would be promoted to the Premiership with Motherwell. Quite remarkable given they were in the relegation Play-Off just last season!

Forfar didn’t really get going and would go straight down while Kilmarnock put some form together and lifted themselves up to 6th having been 9th at the New Year.

I cant help but feel slightly disappointed but we still took some big steps forward, and next season promises to be a good one.
