Liverpool Face Off Against Tottenham in Early-Season Six Pointer

http://i.eurosport.com/2016/03/01/1806219-38121671-2560-1440.jpg

The early Friday kick-off is always a tough fixture for a team: one day less preparation, less build-up and media focus, and sometimes a more relaxed feel to the game. However, that was the last thing on Liverpool Fans' minds as they came into this tie against Tottenham desperately needing 3 points to kickstart their league season under Jamie Carragher.

Liverpool had been hit hard by an injury to left-back Faouzi Ghoulam; the Algerian left-back looked set for his first League start, until he picked up an ankle injury at Algeria training in mid-week. With Ghoulam out, Alberto Moreno returned to his usual left-back slot, and Liverpool were hoping the Spaniard could show some of the brilliant football he was capable of.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino spoke to the media yesterday, and stated he was looking to play a free-flowing, attacking game; a game which Liverpool would have to be alert to, especially with players like Harry Kane and Erik Lamela likely to line up for Tottenham.

Liverpool Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Fernando Muslera, Nathaniel Clyne, Aleksandr Dragovic, Mamadou Sakho, Alberto Moreno, James Milner, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, Phillipe Coutinho, Danny Ings
Liverpool Subs: Simon Mingolet, Martin Skrtel, Lucas, Danny Ings, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Maia, Christian Benteke

Tottenham Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Dejan Lovren, Jan Vertonghen, Nabil Bentaleb, Moussa Dembele, Erik Lamela, Cristian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane
Tottenham Substitutes: Michel Vorm, Kyle Walker, Filip Kostic, Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli, Danny Rose, Clinton N'Jie

Liverpool kicked off, and the two teams seemed to be sounding each other out - some steady passing moves marked the first 5 minutes, until a quick break from Nacer Chadli down the left ended in a Spurs throw-in - Nathaniel Clyne the man with the heroic block from the cross. From the throw, Dembele brought the ball down the left wing, before cutting inside, and driving a low, hard cross into the middle. Muslera was equal to it, though, and threw himself on the ball, before clearing the ball with an upfield kick.
The kick only found Dejan Lovren, though and the ex-Liverpool man found Chadli with a searching ball forward. The cross this time met the head of Harry Kane, who forced two exquisite stops from Muslera in quick succession before Mamadou Sakho stepped in to clear the ball.
Liverpool were on the ropes, and Tottenham kept coming. The clearance from Sakho only made it as far as Lovren on the half-way line, but his header was met by Emre Can, who slowed play down and set about giving his side a level head in midfield, recycling possession and letting them build from the back.

Another five minutes of steady play passed, and Tottenham remained the dominant side; Eriksen's cross found Kane in the middle once more, but as the Englishman rose above Sakho to drive a header towards goal, the two clashed heads and Kane required medical attention. All seemed well though, as the Striker returned to the field shortly afterwards, but not before Erik Lamela picked up a yellow card for a Cynical trip on James Milner. The game was steadily developing a steel edge, as both teams fought for supremacy.

Liverpool carved their first chance after 25 minutes, when James Milner's corner fell to Roberto Firmino just outside the box. He squared it to Danny Ings to the right of the penalty spot, but the Englishman's shot was brilliantly met by Hugo Lloris with a glorious diving save.

It was Spurs who eventually made the breakthrough, just after the half-hour mark, when Moussa Dembele ran onto the end of Lamela's cross from deep, volleying past Muslera with aplomb to set the Tottenham fans into a frenzy. Tottenham were the side in the ascendancy, and Harry Kane doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime, splitting the defence in two, capitalising on some sloppy defending from Sakho to stroke the ball past Muslera in the Liverpool goal. As the teams went in at half time, Liverpool were sinking without trace.

The second half saw a change of formation from Liverpool, as Carragher looked to catch Tottenham as they reached complacency. There were no substitutions, although both Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino had failed to have an impact on the game in the first half.

The change of formation didn't seem to have much effect, though, as Harry Kane doubled his tally just five minutes after the restart. Carragher sprung into action, replacing Nathaniel Clyne, who had struggled with his man-marking duties, with young right back Trent Alexander Arnold. Christian Benteke also replaced Danny Ings, who had been spectacularly ineffective, while Jordan Henderson replaced Emre Can in midfield.

The substitutes combined 5 minutes later to pull a goal back for Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold took a quick throw-in deep in the Liverpool half, finding Sakho with a long ball. The Frenchman knocked the ball forwards to Milner - one of Liverpool's standout performers in a poor display - who played it left to Coutinho. The Brazilian's ball forward found Henderson, and the club captain found the onrushing Alexander-Arnold on the right flank. The youngster played in Firmino, who's lobbed pass found Benteke in oceans of space in the Spurs box, and the former Aston Villa man made no mistake, powering his volley past Hugo Lloris.

But there was to be no fairy-tale ending. A Christian Eriksen free-kick found Dembele unmarked, and he dispatched a smooth volley to make it 4-1 to Tottenham on a miraculous afternoon at White Hart Lane. In the end, it was a deserved victory for the London side, although Liverpool fans are bound to be disappointed not to have taken more from the game.
Awful result but Carragher will turn it around
Serious pressure on the manager early on...
Very poor result, the pressure is on already.
Not the best start, but I have faith in you ;) I am sure when the tactic gets more fluid results will come (Just hopefully not against Tottenham :)) ) Also, it might be worth trying Coutinho as a F9, think he will suit that role great and will then make more room for the likes of Lallana and Firmino to be your No.10s
Ouch.

Resurgent Liverpool Prepare for Everton Match

Catalyst: Christian Benteke has scored 5 goals in his last 5 games for Liverpool

Ahead of Liverpool's trip to City rivals Everton, we look back at in incredible 6 game unbeaten run in all competitions what has seen them climb to 11th in the Premiership, and top their Europa League group ahead of Sampdoria, Saint-Etienne and Schalke. The club haven't lost a game since a 3-0 defeat to Leicester in the Capital One Cup in September, and their last league defeat was against Tottenham at the start of September.

As we head into November, Liverpool's current vein of form has seen them take on Stoke, Saint-Etienne, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sampdoria and Manchester United, and they have won every single game, barring a 4-4 draw with current 2nd placed side Leicester, in which Shinki Okazaki scored all four of the home side's goals.

It is a run of form which fans will be hoping can long continue, as Liverpool power towards Christmas - only two points separate them from 4th-Placed Tottenham, in a league which is still developing and finding it's feet. Everton, who Liverpool face tomorrow, are currently 3rd, only 3 points ahead of Jamie Carragher's side, while Arsenal and Leicester top the table - Arsenal are still unbeaten after the first 10 games of the season.

Speaking to the Press, Liverpool's manager Jamie Carragher credited his players for the recent resurgence in form, picking out Christian Benteke as their most attacking threat. "I think it's pretty clear that Christian has played a huge part in our recent form - he's scored 5 goals in his last 5 starts, and that's an incredible record for any striker. I'd also like to give huge credit to Joe Allen, who has been a rock in our Midfield, and Phillipe Coutinho who's had a hand in 5 of our goals this season."

But Liverpool will be without Coutinho for their trip to Goodison - the little Brazilian damaged his knee Cartilage against Manchester United, and is expected to be out for around 5 weeks. However, Carragher is looking to fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino to plug that gap, despite the left-wing not being his most favoured position. Fans will be hoping that Coutinho's absence doesn't affect the side too much as they prepare for Everton tomorrow - we'll have all the action from Goodison, starting from 4pm tomorrow!
Good luck, hopefully this turns your season around for the better
Great to see the Reds back in form!
Time to turn this form around, best of luck!
Beat the fuckers please :))
Clinical: Divock Origi was Talismanic against Arsenal at Anfield

Despite a poor start to their season, Jamie Carragher's Liverpool side are really starting to turn their fortunes around, and have now only lost 1 game from their last 12 games in all competitions. It still stings that that particular defeat came against bitter rivals Everton, as a late Kevin Mirallas wonder strike gave their city rivals a 2-1 victory.

However, many are pointing to recent tactical changes as the catalyst for Liverpool's improvement, as Jamie Carragher adapted his style of play to suit the players at his disposal. Most characteristic of this change is James Milner - the 29 year old midfielder had previously been playing in the heart of midfield, where he would often be found out of position, or missing tackles. In the past month and a half, he has been moved out to a wide midfield role, while Adam Lallana has moved into a more central attacking position - these two changes have inspired incredible form from both Englishmen, and indeed, James Milner picked up his 3rd Man of the Match award against Arsenal at the weekend, as he Assisted both of Divock Origi's goals, and scored one of his own with a glorious volley from Alberto Moreno's cross.

In Form: James Milner has struck a rich vein of form under Jamie Carragher

It is difficult to pinpoint one catalyst for Liverpool's revival, as so many of the squad are in imperious form. We've already discussed James Milner, but he is one of 5 players who have been critical in turning Liverpool's fortunes around. Below, we Analyse the performances of each of these 5, and look ahead to an important December for Liverpool as they look to continue their creep up the table.

Liverpool are currently gearing up for a tough December, in which they will play 7 games: West Ham, Watford, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Norwich home and away, as well as their final Europa League group game against Saint-Etienne. Liverpool have already mathematically secured qualification from that group, and so more focus will likely be placed on the League games, as they look to start their new year on a high.
Great to see the Reds back in form mate! Proving yourself more than capable of leading the club to glory! Keep it up!

The Impossible Dream?

Talisman: Daniel Sturbridge celebrates his late winner against Norwich

When Jamie Carragher's Liverpool side dropped to their 3rd defeat in their opening 5 games with a 4-1 loss to Tottenham which left them 19th in the Premiership, fans would have been forgiven for questioning the board's wisdom in appointing such an inexperienced manager. It was a dark time for Liverpool, with online message boards filled with cries of "SACK THE MANAGER, CALL FOR HIS HEAD!" and "SACK THE MANAGER!!!!!!!!!" coming thick and fast, while other fans were more staunch in their support for the new boss, stating that "Not the best start to the season but I know that we can pull it back soon and get some good results" and "It's still very early days, anything can happen."

But since then, Carragher's side have lost just two League games - once against Everton, and once against West Ham. Supporters have also been hurt by the Capital One Cup defeat to Leicester, but an as-yet-unbeaten run in the Europa League has massaged the ego somewhat. In our last article we discussed the form of key players such as James Milner and Adam Lallana - but special mention must be made of Striker Christian Benteke, who has provided a steady stream of goals, clocking 10 in his 14 starts. The Belgian's work isn't always flashy or spectacular, but he's keeping Liverpool ticking over, and giving his more flamboyant team-mates the confidence they need to keep pushing forwards.

Top: Christian Benteke's 10 goals in 14 starts makes him Liverpool's top Scorer in the League

So how exactly has Carragher turned his season around? The boss shed some light on his methods in an interview with ESPN, stating that "In the first few months, I was still trying to get to grips with my squad - there are a lot of incredibly talented footballers here, and getting to know how to get the best out of them took a while. Since we've settled on one or two formations and a style of play, we've become a lot more consistent - the results may not always be pretty, but as long as we're putting points on the board I think we're all happy."

The Tactics

Carragher has implemented a simple system with 2 distinct setups which are both designed to pressurise the opponent high up the pitch and break quickly - and it is a system which has worked well for him, as we'll see below

League Form

After a poor start to league life, Liverpool have drastically improved since getting used to the new approach, and have thrived in big games as well as small, notching victories over Manchester United and League Leaders Arsenal in recent weeks. There may still be times when the concentration is lacking, or they're cut open easily, but those are increasingly few and far between.

League Table

Liverpool have rocketed up the table, and are now serious contenders for a Top 4 spot come the end of the season - its a jump of 15 places since fans were calling for Carragher's head, and they are delighted.
