Hero:Adam Lallana netted Liverpool's second with a 60th minute volley
Liverpool's season may have petered out in the league to a 6th-placed finish, accompanied by a crushing 2-1 defeat to Watford in the FA Cup courtesy of Odion Igahalo's extra time goal, but nothing had deterred the Liverpool fans from descending on Basel for the Europa League final, as their heroes lined up against Spanish side Valencia.
The Spanish side had themselves finished 5th in their league, securing a place in the Europa League by default, but for both of these sides, Champions League football was at stake. For Valencia, that meant extra funds, and the honour of being the 5th Spanish side in the Competition. For Liverpool, it could be the draw that finally allowed Jamie Carragher to sign the big names and redevelop the squad.
The match started slowly, both teams probing and pushing to see if the opposition would crack. The fans on both sides continued to ratchet up the volume, and it was Valencia who responded first. 27 year old Midfielder Dani Parejo broke clear of the Liverpool defence and lifted the ball calmly over Fernando Muslera in the Liverpool goal.
It is so often the case that first blood is crucial in a European final, and Valencia would have been looking to settle into their lead - for the remainder of the first half, Liverpool let them do that; the Spaniards' passing was fluid and accurate, and the English side couldn't get near the ball.
The second half was a different story - 2 goals in 6 minutes from Joe Allen and Adam Lallana but the Reds ahead, and it was their turn to settle into the lead. Fluid, pinpoint passing kept the ball away from Valencia, and quick pressing won it back when it was lost.
It was all going so well, until the 95th minute - in the dying embers of the game, and from a seemingly harmless free-kick midway inside the Liverpool half, the ball came long over the top, and Alvaro Negredo jumped highest, diverting a header into the bottom corner of the net to draw his side level.
Extra time was tense - Liverpool were playing for the win, while Valencia clearly wanted penalties, sitting back and soaking up the pressure. Liverpool's hero came in the unlikely form of Austrian Aleksandar Dragovic, whose only goal of the season - a sweetly connected volley from the 6 yard line - handed Liverpool their 4th Europa League title!
