Prologue

Manchester, 16th August 2016

Fans watched from the grandstand as an irate Phil Neville made his way across the pitch. Some laughed at the admittedly awkward snarl on his face. Some pointed at the direction he was seemingly headed. Phil was unfazed by all of it, and had his eyes on one person.

Gary Neville was standing with his assistant, a certain Paul Scholes, discussing the match ahead. The players were still in the dressing room, preparing, but Gary wanted to be out on the pitch to talk tactics with Paul. He had just finished his first ever pre-match press conference, what with all the added media coverage around the match. He quietly smiled to himself, remembering his comments. Sure, they were a little bit inflammatory, and Phil might be a bit upset, he reasoned, but it was just manager mind games, right?

He didn't see his younger brother approach from the side until he saw Phil's fist flying towards his face.
To be fair, that punch would probably do his looks more favours than damage.

Manchester, 16th August 2016

Gary Neville fell to the ground unconscious as Phil Neville was hit with two of the most unbearable pains of his life.

His hand felt broken, shattered, after connecting with his brother's cheek. And his heart felt torn. He instantly regretted taking Gary out, but he didn't have time to think about anything. Everything happened at once.

Paul Scholes, who was standing just three feet from Phil, attempted to crash tackle a stationary Phil, succeeding in pushing him back several metres before Phil grappled back. Several irate home fans had jumped the fence and were on their way over to the incident. Some of the players had caught wind of the incident and were heading out of the tunnel.

Phil watched this perfect storm approaching him and reminisced on what had brought him here. The rivalry, the job application, the spiteful decisions he had made. He figured it was a story for another time, because at that moment, he saw a large, tall bald Salford supporter coming at him with a wild fist and braced himself for impact.

There were now two unconscious Nevilles on the turf of Moor Lane.
