Krimphove Promises To Take Magdeburg To Next Level

- Georg Krimphove wins landslide election to become new president
- Promises to help take Magdeburg into 2. Bundesliga
- Hopes to emulate Preussen Munster stay at MDCC Arena

Georg Krimphove was today unveiled as the new president of 1. FC Magdeburg, after a landslide election victory in which he ousted Peter Fechner. Having become a late candidate for the post, only declaring his interest in the presidency at the MDCC Arena at the end of September, Krimphove rallied and managed to receive a whopping 60% of the vote, with former president Fechner receiving only 15% of the remaining vote. Having previously resided over Magdeburg’s 3. Liga rivals Preussen Munster for over a year, Krimphove has added two of his former directors from Munster to the Magdeburg board with Gunther Frisch and Hannes Ditterle being appointed.

In his first interview as at the president of the current 3. Liga leaders, Krimphove went on to declare his intentions in the immediate and long term future for the club.

08.11.17, 14:00 Georg Krimphove: This is a huge honour for me to have been elected the president of this massive club. Obviously the club was moving in the right direction under Peter and with Christopher [Steegmann] in charge. Appointing Christopher has so far been a brilliant decision by the former regime and it is my intention to sign Christopher on to a longer contract so we can extend the good work he’s doing here. I’ve already spoken to Christopher about my intentions for this club and what he wants to achieve and how that matches to my ambitions and I can promise the fans now that it is my intention to help Christopher help Magdeburg to the next level and in the immediate future that means earning promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

Upon Krimphove’s election, it is believed that the link and affiliation between FCM and 2. Bundesliga Eintracht Braunschweig has been brought to an end by the new president, who believes that a new direction is needed. Krimphove also confirmed that as part of his promise to help take Magdeburg to the next level that he would put the money towards helping the club to improve its training facilities, especially with the first team performing so well in the 3. Liga and promotion to the 2. Bundesliga looking likely as it stands. For the time being though, the priorities of Krimphove and Steegmann remain focused on earning promotion with FCM sitting top of the 3. Liga after 16 games going into the last international break of 2017.

Christopher Steegmann Signs Contract Extension

- Steegmann extends contract until June 2019
- Georg Krimphove delivers on first promise as new president
- Steegmann excited to take FCM into rest of 3. Liga campaign and beyond

Christopher Steegmann has today put pen to paper on a new contract extension that will keep the 38 year old in the managerial position at the MDCC Arena until June 2019. Steegmann signing a new deal at the club perhaps, significantly represents new president Georg Krimphove delivering on his promise to sign Christopher Steegmann to a longer term deal as a reward for the hard work undertaken by Steegmann and his coaching staff during the first half of the 3. Liga campaign with Magdeburg currently sitting 8 points clear of SpVgg Unterhaching after 16 games.

During his first 4 months in charge of FCM, Steegmann has presided over 17 competitive games, with Magdeburg having won 12 of them, losing only 4. FCM have scored 30 goals during that time conceding 14 with Steegmann’s side consistently looking to get the ball forward and cause problems for the opposition defence. Steegmann’s promises when he was first appointed look to so far be being fulfilled and the signing of a new contract represents an exciting time for Magdeburg as they begin to start thinking about the second half of the campaign.

Speaking to fc-magdeburg.de as news of his contract extension broke, this is what Steegmann went on to say:

09.11.17, 10:30 Christopher Steegmann: For me this is brilliant and a little reward for the hard work we’ve all put in so far. That is down to the players and they are the reason why we are doing so well at the moment but it is an honour for me to be awarded this new contract and I can’t wait to keep working with this team hopefully into the 2. Bundesliga next season and beyond that into whatever we achieve in the future. This is a huge club with a brilliant set of fans and an awful lot of potential and I am confident in my ability to help this team achieve its potential and hopefully we’ll continue moving in the right direction for the long term.

His interview with fc-magdeburg.de was also Steegmann’s first interview since the news was confirmed that Georg Krimphove would take over as the new president of FCM, with Steegmann going on to confirm his excitement at the chance to work under the new president.

Obviously it’s well documented he was at Preussen Munster before and he helped them settle as a regular club in this division and one that can cause the sides at the top problems and hopefully he’ll support me and the rest of the coaching staff and players in the same way and that support from above will help us translate the feel around this club into results on the pitch.

That's an unsurprising decision considering how well he has done with the club thus far. Hopefully Steegmann can go from strength-to-strength and continue to get results with the players.

After the thrilling 4-2 victory over Rot-Weiss Erfurt at the tail end of October, Magdeburg confidently saw off Zwickau 2-0 to continue their run at the top of the 3. Liga table. Following the international break, a solo strike from Christian Beck saw Magdeburg beat bottom of the table Karlsruhe 1-0 to compile further misery on Karlsruhe who now look in serious danger of dropping down into the Regionalliga after their relegation from the 2. Bundesliga last season. In the final game of the month, Magdeburg took on second place SpVgg Unterhaching in a big game between the top two in the 3. Liga with the visitors running out 3-0 winners to close the gap at the top of the table to just 5 points.

Mid-Season Review: 1. FC Magdeburg

With the 3. Liga season having passed it’s halfway stage, and the January transfer window right around the corner, the table is beginning to take shape, with the sides pushing for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and those looking to avoid relegation this season becoming more and more prominent. With the 20 teams in the league now having started their winter break, Kicker are taking a look at each of the 20 teams with today the turn to look at the current league leaders, 1. FC Magdeburg.

1. FC Magdeburg

Current Position: 1st
Media Prediction: 4th
Record (W/D/L): 15/2/4
Top Goalscorer: Christian Beck, 18

Key Player: Christian Beck. The clubs leading goal scorer is a pivotal figure in Christopher Steegmann’s team. He spearheads one of the most lethal attacks in the 3. Liga and everything Magdeburg do well seems to go through the forward. Alongside his ability to put the ball in the back of the net, Beck is also a very good distributor of the ball and proves to be an excellent link up player between the midfield duo in Steegmann’s 4-2-3-1 and the wide men which are usually Philip Turpitz and Tobias Schwede. If Beck can stay fit and continue scoring goals, Magdeburg will score the goals that fire them to promotion come May.

What They Need In January: With Marius Sowislo and Bjorn Rother having played most of the season so far in the two midfield roles, as a result of Charles-Elie Laprevotte’s injury, Magdeburg are in desperate need of another midfielder to play in the middle of the park. An injury to Sowislo, who has excelled in an almost ball-winning midfield role would put Magdeburg on the back burner as they lack the options in the midfield and Christopher Steegmann may be thanking his stars a fraction that there has been no serious injuries to one of his central midfielders. The media have caught hold of this need for Magdeburg and the club have been linked extensively with Maximilian Waak of TSG Hoffenheim and Florian Kohls of 3. Liga rivals Wurzburg.

Can They Earn Promotion?: Magdeburg could quite easily earn promotion as it stands. Ultimately the table doesn’t lie. Magdeburg have been the best team in the 3. Liga by some distance this season, and they should probably be further ahead than they currently are. Their defeats have been defeats where Magdeburg have failed to put their chances away and it is fair to say that in only one of their defeats they have been truly outclassed and that was against promotion rivals Unterhaching. If they can continue playing the attacking football that has got them this far then they will be celebrating promotion at the very least come the end of the season, but the club as it stands should quite clearly have the aim of the 3. Liga title at the back of their minds.

Following on from the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Unterhaching at the tail end of last month, Magdeburg took to the pitch against Bremen II knowing they needed a big performance as FCM ran out huge 4-1 winners thanks to a double from both Tobias Schwede and Christian Beck. Following that, Magdeburg were able to seal a 2-1 victory over Sonnenhof-Grossaspach before Magdeburg were held to a 2-2 draw against VfL Osnabruck thanks to a last gasp equaliser for the visitors as Magdeburg headed into the winter break top of the 3. Liga by 8 points.

FCM Move Fast To Secure Maximilian Waack Loan Deal

- FCM complete signing of Hoffenheim midfielder until end of season
- Trained with Hoffenheim first team this season
- Can play in behind the striker or in a deeper midfield role

FCM have today completed their first signing of the January transfer window after completing a loan deal for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Maximilian Waack until the end of the season. Having made just four appearances for Hoffenheim II this season, Waack has spent the majority of the season working with Hoffenheim’s highly coveted coach Julian Nagelsmann and the Hoffenheim first team squad. Waack’s recruitment represents a major step from Steegmann to reinforce the midfield area of the Magdeburg squad, with the 21 year old being able to play just in behind the striker in a similar role to Christian Beck or deeper on the pitch in a more central midfield role.

Waack joined Hoffenheim from Walldorf, having graduated from the academy at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, going on to make 42 appearances for Hoffenheim II since the 2014/2015 season but will now be hoping to establish himself as a first team regular at the MDCC Arena under Christopher Steegmann’s management. Waack is believed to have been a target of Steegmann’s for a few weeks now and the Magdeburg manager will no doubt be relieved to have secured the signing of his man, despite the deal only being a temporary one, although there could well be space for FCM and Steegmann to make further moves to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis come the summer.

With Waack having joined the first team squad at the MDCC Arena ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Regionalliga side Rodinghausen, it looks likely that the 21 year old will make his debut for Magdeburg at the weekend.

Saturday is the chance to begin a new chapter in my career and really impress and I am very excited for the opportunities that are going to arise at this club over the next couple of months.

Meanwhile Chrisotpher Steegmann said he was delighted to have got the deal over the line and to have been able to add some extra steel to his midfield reinforcements.

We’ve been looking at Maximilian for a while and to have got his signature within a few days of the transfer window opening is a very good move and I am very happy and excited about what Maximilian can add to this team. We’re already going to great places so to have someone with the quality and potential of Maximilian then we’re definitely in good shape now.

Magdeburg’s players returned from their winter break with their first mid-season friendly as Florian Pick scored a stoppage time winner against Rodinghausen after the Regionalliga side had fought back from 2-0 down only for Magdeburg to win 3-2. MSV Duisburg of the 2. Bundesliga then visited the MDCC Arena with Magdeburg securing a tight 1-0 victory against the second tier side. Magdeburg then returned to competitive action to beat Lotte 2-0 as Christian Beck scored two goals. However Magdeburgs good run of form soon ran out as Wehen Wiesbaden visited the MDCC Arena on Matchday 23 of the 3. Liga season with the visitors sealing a tight 1-0 victory as FCM once again were left frustrated by another tight defeat in which they probably should have won.

Steegmann: “SpVgg Unterhaching Are Going To Push All The Way”

- Steegmann fears only one win in last four could open up title race
- Manager believes Unterhaching will push FCM all the way to the end of the season

In the wake of Magdeburg’s 1-1 draw with Preussen Munster on Saturday thanks to Richard Weil’s header, manager Christopher Steegmann believes that second placed SpVgg Unterhaching would push his league leaders all the way to the end of the season. Since the return of the 3. Liga from Germany’s winter break, FCM have won only one of their three games, and Steegmann believes that the loss of form could damage FCM’s hopes of easing their way to the 3. Liga title and the hunt for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. With 14 games remaining of this season, FCM are 6 points clear of SpVgg Unterhaching but with a huge meeting between the two teams to come at the MDCC Arena on May 5th, the penultimate weekend of the season.

Speaking to fc-magdeburg.de after the final whistle on Saturday afternoon, Steegmann first gave his thoughts on the game and why he felt FCM weren’t winning games where they would have been in the early stages of the season.

03.02.18, 18:00 Christopher Steegmann: “It is frustrating that we haven’t been able to win the last two games especially when I think we have created enough chances to see the game out and seal all three points. In Christian Beck we have one of the most lethal forwards in the league but we haven’t been able to utilise his abilities in front of goal, and it has cost us now 5 points. It is frustrating but now we have to look forward and go and start picking up three points from games again. It is clear what our aims for the season are and if we keep dropping points at this kind of rate then we will eventually miss out on those aims and after all the hard work at the beginning of the season it would be frustrating to throw it all away.”

The manager then said fc-magdeburg.de that he had been impressed by Unterhaching so far this season and that they would offer a real threat to FCM, even if FCM were to recover their form and start winning games again.

03.02.18, 18:10 Christopher Steegmann: “They’ve been very impressive so far this season, there’s no denying that. Claus [Schromm] has done a great job in bringing them up from the Regionalliga last season and now leading them to a push for promotion and the title, especially when you consider the size and resources of some of the teams in this division. They are going to push us all the way for the title and when you look at their form and the way they’re playing then that is worrying because they are playing some good stuff and picking up good results. There is a huge meeting against them come the end of the season, we’ve just got to hope that there is breathing space between us and them by the time that game comes around.”
