Hi Folks,

I’m looking for a bit of advice on ways to improve my tactics. I’ve been enjoying my first game as Blackburn, and am currently holding on to the top spot in my league. However, I don’t feel that I’ve been doing particularly well, and have two common problems that seem to popup.

1. I struggle for possession in lots of games where I’m ranked as favourite etc.
2. Pretty much in every game I get a message saying that most of my passes are failing to reach
their targets no matter the distance.

I’ve taken screenshots of my formations, I thought that I would work with 3 main ones.

A 4-4-2 as ‘default’ take all comers, as the game often suggests I use that. A 4-3-3 as a somewhat more offensive formation and a 4-3-1-2 which I have had some good success with scoring goals.

I’m tempted to swap my use of a 4-4-2 or somehow tailor it to be used for counter attack, for low possession? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, this is my first FM game.

It's a few years old but it doesn't matter.
Your top tactic, the 4-3-3 is pretty close to being okay, but there are a couple of things I'd change:

Be more expressive - probably one of the reasons for losing a lot of possession - as blackburn I probably wouldn't use that instruction.

Work ball into box - i wouldn't really use that - you might be able to make it work but for me I've never used it that effectively.

Your lone striker as a target man doesnt really make sense for that tactic - in general i never use target man at all - but if you did want to make that work you'd want to play to his strengths with more crosses. - I find False 9(support) and Complete Forward(support) work well with Inside Forwards (attack) on FM18. Could just use adavanced forward or complete forward attack but may want to consider putting your inside forwards on support if you do that.

And lastly, I think with your midfield I'd get someone with a support duty in there - depends how attacking you want to be DLP(de), BBM, CM(de) could work? DLP(de), CM(su), BBM could work? BWM(su), DLP(su), CM(de)? Try some different combos.

Hope that helps. Read some guides and look at some tactics other people are using to get an idea of what is working.
Hi There,

I would recommend reading the Tactical Development Workshop available on FM Scout too.

Hopefully it will read the same way as I have taken it in that you do not necessarily have to play Control or Attacking to play possession football. Use of defend or counter attack can give you impressive results if you want to play possession football and also provide a more stable defensive unit without the ball.
I would suggest without seeing your team play that you need more involvement from the other players to make it more possession based i.e. you full backs should be in either support or attack. Similarly I might recommend having one of you CM's with defend duty which will also help with the possession as he is in a deeper role to control the play a distribute more effectively whilst providing extra cover when you lose the ball.
Using a Target man in a possession based game is not advisable as his involvement will be quite limited if you aim is to not play balls in the box as one person has already suggested.

Hope this helps!
