I let it run for a few days in the background, and over time memory usage increased to two gigabytes, and since 32bit applications can't address more memory, it then died.
Error messages were lots of "Stream write error", lots of "Failed to allocate memory for GIF DIB", and a few "Out of memory".
Edit: This also corrupted the layout.dat file. I had to delete it to make Genie Scout work again - it wouldn't load saved games or anything.
