Buying and selling players as manager of Middlesbrough on FM according to me.

Operation: make Middlesbrough rich.

First thing I try to work out when looking at my team for now and going forward is what is the minimum PA I want to sign and also what’s the minimum PA I want to keep around.

For me the answer to both of those questions as the manager of Middlesbrough was PA 150.

Only one player was above PA 150 in my entire club - Nathan Wood (Age 17 PA 156).

So for me it’s conceivable that any of the rest can go. Chances are a lot of them will be past age 27 - an age at which I’d be looking to sell anyway. And even if they weren’t - none of them have a PA of 150 or above - so they’re never going to be that great anyway. Plus you never manage to sell everyone - because I’ll only ever accept an offer of just below current valuation or above.

1. When on FM click on Staff
2. Under Responsibilities click on Transfers and Contracts
3. Make sure under Transfers every setting is set to you
4. Make sure under Contracts every setting is set to you
5. Make sure under Offer To Clubs the transfer settings are “Alert clubs he’s available for this percentage of his value: 100%” and make sure “Also, transfer list player and set as surplus to requirements, so all clubs learn of his transfer availability” is ticked.
6. Also under Offer To Clubs make sure the loan settings are “Playing Wage Percentage 100%” and “Unused Wage Percentage 100%” and make sure “Also, list player as available for loan, so all clubs learn of his loan availability” is ticked.
7. Then back to the main menu and click on Squad
8. Click on Filter
9. Tick all squads (Senior Squad, U23 Squad, U18 Squad)
10. On the left hand side of every player there is a tick. Go to the player at the top of the list, go to his tick on the left hand side and click and hold his tick, then drag the cursor from his tick all the way down to the tick of the player at the bottom of the list. You’ll then have every player at your club highlighted. Then, depending on your minimum PA requirements, untick any players you definitely do not want to sell. For me the only player in my entire club above PA 150 was Nathan Wood and he was just 17 so nowhere near selling age of 26/27.
11. Then while players are highlighted, right click and select Transfer and then select Offer To Clubs and then select For Transfer.

This will mean you will have automatically offered all of the highlighted players to other clubs for 100% of their current valuation. Then, any offer you receive that is at worst 25% lower than the players current valuation, accept it. So basically if a player is valued at £10m, don’t sell him for any less than £7.5m. Hopefully most will go for their full valuation or more, but you’ve got to accept that you’re not always gonna win in the transfer market on every deal - sometimes it’s just about the long term view of winning in the transfer market in the end. So max 25% below current valuation I’d say. Unless you really just wanna get rid of the particular player.

Then go back to Genie Scout (you’ve already used it to check the CA and PA of your players) and do the following:

1. Click on Player Search and next to Potential Ability change the setting from “0-200” to “150-200”.
2. Then next to Age change the setting from “0-0” to “0-29”.
3. Then click OK and you will have a list of all players on the game that have a minimum PA of 150 and are maximum age 29.
4. If your game is anything like mine your results will return roughly 750 players.
5. Then click the Genie Scout logo in the top left of the screen and then click My Shortlist and then click Save Shortlist.
6. When saving the shortlist - you need to save the file in the folder in “Documents”. So basically it’s Documents, Sports Interactive, Football Manager 2020, shortlists and then I would save the file as “150 pa, age 29”.
7. Then go back onto FM and click Scouting and then click Shortlist.
8. You’ll then see a screen of your “(Default)” shortlist. Click on (Default) and then select New Shortlist...
9. The game will then ask you to name the new shortlist you’re creating, I’d name it “150 pa, age 29”.
10. You’ll then have a brand new clean shortlist with no players in it. Click on the settings logo next to “150 pa, age 29” or whatever you just named your new shortlist. Then select Set Active Shortlists...
11. This is where you choose the shortlists you want to make active. You will be informed of news on any player inside an active shortlist. Untick your new shortlist, the one I would’ve named “150 pa, age 29” and select Ok. This will mean you’re not bombarded with news on all the players in your shortlist.
12. Then click the settings logo next to “150 pa, age 29” or whatever you named your shortlist again and then select Import Shortlist...
13. Then find the shortlist you created using Genie Scout. It should automatically be there right in front of you. Select it and then click Load.
14. You’ll then have a list of probably over 700 players all in your shortlist. Change the setting so when viewing the players you view their “General Info”. Then you can see their position, the club they’re at, their nationality, their age, and their valuation etc.
15. Click VALUE to order the players in your shortlist by cheapest first.
16. Then back to the main menu and click on Finances. View your Transfer Budget. Let’s say it’s £2 million. But whatever it is - keep it in mind.
17. Then back to the main menu and click on Scouting again and then Shortlist. Your new shortlist will still be there and still ordered by cheapest valuation to highest valuation.
18. Then what you could do on the old FM’s is on the left hand side of every player there is a tick. Go to the player at the top of the list, go to his tick on the left hand side and click and hold his tick, then drag the cursor from his tick all the way down to the tick of the first player to be valued at more than £2m. If your game is anything like mine you’ll then have roughly 40 players highlighted. Then while the players are highlighted, right click and select Transfer and then select Make Enquiry. But you can’t do this anymore because of the issue with clubs then responding to your enquiry with a non-negotiable clause (Percentage Of Next Sale) in the offer that can’t be removed.
19. This is when you begin to individually make transfer offers for every player in your shortlist that’s valued under £2m (because we just checked your transfer budget and it was £2m). When you make an offer for a player firstly in regards to the transfer fee just offer whatever the player’s current valuation is. Then on every initial offer for a player you must click “+Add” next to Additional Clauses and select Percentage Of Profit From Next Sale and then click Remove and exclude from negotiation and then you must click “+Add” again next to Additional Clauses and select Percentage Of Next Sale and then click Remove and exclude from negotiation. This will stop clubs from stealing future transfer fee’s from you.
20. Finally, when spending more than say £4m on one player, it would be worthwhile to consider using the pay in instalments feature. Say you sell a player for £2m, you would think you could then only have a maximum of £2m to spend on a replacement player. But that’s not true. On FM you can sell a player for £2m; then make an offer for a player for an initial fee of £2m but with additional fees of 3 yearly instalments of £2m each year (£6m). So a total of £8m - £2m initial fee and then £2m for the next three years. Just from a £2m sale you can then sign a replacement player for £8m. This is really handy.

I can’t forget to mention how important it is to loan players out in the future. This is where you can make a fortune. Then sell all players around the age of 27.

Keep signing the best youth. Loan them all out (other than starting 11) on season long loans. On every loan deal the minimum requirement should be that the other club pay 100% of player wages. On some players you can look to recoup £5m+ per year per player and that’s on top of 100% of the player’s wages. This is done by asking for a monthly fee on top of the player’s wages. Imagine having 50 players out on loan making you £5m per year each. You’d be bringing in £250 million per year just from loanee’s!

£5,000,000 x 50 players
= £250,000,000 (£250 million)

This means you’re making money on all your youth investments if they’re not playing in your first team and then whenever a player reaches the age of 26/27 - you sell them. Normally for a huge profit. Let’s say average purchase price of your players is £10m - when you sell them 10 years or so later - you want the average sale price to be around £30m at least.

Down the line - I think you’ll be very successful trophy wise but most importantly (if you play the game how I’ve been playing the game recently) you’ll be a club with a valuation of £1 billion in no time!
