Should I try for another affiliate or just stick with Peterborough? (4 votes)
A strong start that you can certainly be pleased with.

Yeah, very pleased! Although with FM, you know disappointment is always areound the corner!
A decent start

We have started the league well, hopefully that should keep the board happy. Being favourites to win a league is tricky and I can’t afford to slip up.

In the league we have a game against Blyth, they are a good team but I don’t want to lose any points here. We start well, and we take the lead on the 27th minute from a set piece, Bond heads it past an on rushing keeper. Any optimism is quashed when Blyth get an equaliser in the next highlight. We go in at half time 1-1. I tell the players that I believe in them and send them back on their way. We have a few chances and then their centre back gets sent off on the 60th minute. This is our chance to make it count. Nothing. On the 75th minute, I change to a 3-3-4. Still nothing changes and the game finishes 1-1. It is always disappointing not to win but not beating a team with 10 men is frustrating!

After the match against Blyth, it hit home that I need another striker at least. Someone to bring off the bench to make a difference. It also HAS to be on loan. I am £1.7k over my wage budget and I don’t want to potentially upset people by selling any players…yet.

Naturally, I look at my affiliate for a decent-ish player. Turns out all their under 23’s are all 16 so cant be loaned out. Might have to look for another affiliate but don’t know the rules on that yet! So its looking for loans whose parent club don’t want wage contributions. This is going to be slim pickings.

Somehow we manage to sign Klaidi Lolos in time for the next game. He goes straight into the match day squad as my back up striker. He is only rated as 2.5 stars but I panicked and its only a 5 month loan so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Away from transfer dealings and back to the league. Our next match is against Leamington. They are 7-1 outsiders to win this game so we should smash through them and get 3 points. However, this being Football Manager, it’s far more likely I will lose 2-1 after taking an initial lead.

The game starts in the best circumstances for us, they get a CB sent off in the second minute. Surely, we should be able to make this count unlike the last game. Hopefully, we can get an early goal and dictate the game.

It is the 43rd minute before we take the lead. Moke crosses for McLaughin to head in at the far post. We go in at half time 1-0 up, I look at their tactics and they are playing 5-3-1. So having 4 defenders is a bit unneccessary. So I change to a 3-4-3 to try and control the game. It also gives Lolos a chance to make his debut without a lot of pressure.

Within 2 minutes of the second half we double our lead, all strikers combining to get Simons to header in at the back post and we are now in full control of the game. On the 72nd minute, we go 3-0 up and Burrow get his first and our third headed goal of the game. Once the ball hits the back of the net, I rest some players and give some others some minutes. The game ambles on and we take the 3 points.

The next match is Boston. They are top of the league, we are second. We should be top but sloppy draws have stopped us. If we win this, we go top and set our credentials as league leaders.

We get the best possible start with a goal in the 2nd minute. Burrow slots past their keeper. Great start. By the 17th minute, we are 2-1 down. Their goals are both long balls over the top and we are losing. We draw level from the penalty spot when captain McNulty smashes in past the keeper. We take the lead just before half time when Burrow gets an assist and crosses for Simons to play a one-two with the post before slotted past the keeper. A hectic first half and we leading 3-2.

At half time, I tell the players I am disappointed with them. Hopefully that will work. We increase our lead in the 69th minute, when Simons returns the favour and plays a slide rule pass for Burrow to run on to and smash across the keeper. Burrow gets his hat-trick 6 minutes later, their defender makes a horrendous error and essentially squares it to Burrow on the 6 yard box so Burrow passes it in against a keeper in dismay. We are 5-2 up with 15 minutes to go. Shut up shop time. Boston get a consolation goal and we go on to win 5-3. A ridiculous game but the sort of game that makes us love FM. Burrow was standout today with 3 goals and an assist.

With the quick turn around in games we now play Bradford PA. They are bottom of the league but as we all know with FM. That means nothing and due to tiredness, I rest the entire back 4 and a couple of midfielders. We start the game well and take the lead on the 22nd. Tait (CB) scores with a volley from an extremely acute angle. FM in its truest form, especially when his finishing is rated as 6. We double our lead when McLaughlin crosses for Simons to head home.

We go in at half-time 2-0 up, I tell the players to not be complacent. Hopefully the new players will want to stay in the team and not balls it up. The second half is quite dull so I gradually make some subs to rest some players/give others minutes. Annoyingly Moke picks up an injury once I have made my changes. We end the game 2-0 winners.

I check my scouting list to see what players I can bring in. I have three scouts and they are all average at best. None rating higher than 9 to judge player ability or potential. That will have to change.

According to my scouting list, I have asked them to look through 103 players. This is too many from now on I will just invite any players on trial and put them in the reserves to see what they are like.

We have continued our good start to the season beating the league leaders and being undefeated so far. Coming up we enter the FA Cup qualifiers and a local derby.

Apologies for lack of pictures as PC has crashed!
For that level, Lolos looks a decent pull - especially if you're not paying a penny for him. Good luck in the qualifiers, cup runs could be huge for the club's finances!

Glad to see the good form continuing. Long may it!

Hope you can go far in the cup, because as Justice said: can be great for the financials. Things seem to go great in the league so far too! Very nice start!

Yeah as a loan Lolos has been good but got Maguire coming back from injury in 3 months so wont be here forever!

Thanks! Yeah, I need a good cup run as I'm already £1.7k over wages per week. Might have to offload someone soon to cover!
The Quarter Mark Stage

With the amount of games in the league, it is another quick turn around. The first teamers come back into the team. We have a game against Hereford. They are 7-1 outsiders and are described as part-timers. The game starts and they start really well. Both teams have chances but we go in 0-0 at half time. I aggressively tell the players that they have been awful and that I expect them to be much better second half. AND THEY DELIVER.

We take the lead when Nicell knocks a ball over the top for Burrow to smash across the keeper. We double our lead in the 65th minute when Langstaff heads in from a corner. We are coasting in this game but then we get a nice bonus when Nicell adds a third in the 90th when he scores from a cleared corner. The scoreline looks even better when Burrow gets his second by heading in a cross from Kempster. Disappointingly, Hereford get consolation goal but I’m not worried. The team actually acted on my advice at half time. It’s a miracle!

As much as I want to enjoy the victory, my mind switches immediately to the local derby against Guiseley. We have a week between matches so I can rest my players for this game.

This should be a good game, Guiseley are 8th in the league and being local it should be a good contest. Of course, it does not deliver and the first half is VERY DULL. There are no highlights until the 30th minute and feels like our worst start of the season so far. We end the first half well with Burrow volleying in at the front post from a Moke cross.

At half time, I tell them I am disappointed and that they should do better.

It doesn’t make too much difference and the second half is MUCH scrappier with lots of highlights and Jameson makes a ridiculous save to keep us in the lead. The match is very close with a similar amount of shots on goal, fouls and possession. We cling on to the 1-0 victory. This is by far the closest we have been matched so far.

The FA Cup Qualifying Rd 2 draw is made and we get Barwell. Do I know who they are? No. Do I think there is a chance of a cupset? Of course, but more on them later.

Back to the league, we have a home game against Chester. Apparently, they have been disappointing and are 7th. We start the game well and Simons gets three good opportunities to score with headers but squanders each one. Very unlike him. I think today is not going to be our day. We go in at half time 0-0.

At half time, I tell them they need to improve. I am having to do this far too often at the moment. I get to the 65th minute and make a sub, bringing on Lolos and changing to a 3-4-3. Within 3 minutes, we score. Lolos gets the ball and squares it to Bond who smashes it past the keeper from 25 yards. Always pleasing to see a sub make an impact. The rest of the game continues with no real highlights of quality. We win the game 1-0 but it should have been more comfortable than that.

After 11 games, a quarter of the season has passed. It is time to take stock. There are many positives so far: Top of the league, all players are happy with their playing time and my managerial support is average…AVERAGE is great compared to 2 months ago.

However, there is always a bad side. Negatively, my players are fed up with substandard defensive training this would be dealt with if I had more money for coaches. Which I don’t. This leads me on to the worst point. I am now approximately £2k over budget on transfers and am £3k down with my scouting budget. Something is going to have to go, or someone.
Yet to lose. Very good going thus far.

Very good work once again, and good to see that the goal difference is also much higher than for other teams. Could give you an edge when things start to heat up!

Yes, although I feel a loss is only around the corner. This game tends to let you get a false sense of hope!

Yes, we are doing well scoring goals so far but as always the strikers will go through a barren spell as long as it's not at the same time, it wont be so bad!

Let's start an FA CUP run!

Our FA cup journey starts here! We have been given a home tie (which will help finances) and we are overwhelming favourites with them being 10-1 to win. I’m able to completely rotate my squad except in CM where David Vaughan has got an injury. More on him later. I also get 7 subs rather than 5 because it is FA cup. I hope this is not a banana skin. I NEED THIS MONEY.

David Vaughan is probably a great person in real life but on this save, he is driving me insane! He has made 3 apperances out of 11 so far and he was meant to be my star signing. He frustrates me greatly. He might not make it to next season if money is still tight.

Before the game we get the well loved takeover rumour and of course the chairman denies it. However, it would solve the money problems! Anyway onto our first FA cup game of the season.

In order to fully rotate, we change to a 4-2-2-2 with attacking wingers. We start the game well and take the lead when Lolos scores on the 25th minute. He heads in a cross from Dyer. We double our lead 10 minutes later and Lolos gets another. It is a carbon copy of his first goal as he heads in a cross from Nicell. We could have 3 but it is ruled out for offside. At half time, I make a couple of changes and give a debut to a youngster.

This was a tad too optimistic and the next highlight is them scoring on the 57th. Playing a whole back up team in a different formation may have been a mistake. I give the players a shout of “Demand more”. Thankfully there isn’t any more highlights and we go on to win. Positively, the whole first team has had a rest and we have made £7,000. Which will slightly improve things.

After our cup exploits we focus back on the league. Our next game is Kings Lynn. They are 4th and aiming for promotion. Hopefully, the days off will help with fitness levels. Although, in FM nothing is that simple. We have an awful start and Kings Lynn take the lead in the 23rd minute. They also have a second goal disallowed for offside. This is not how we have been playing so far this season. We pull a goal back before half time through a well worked free kick routine as McNulty heads it past the keeper.

At half time, I tear a strip off the players and they are MUCH better in the second half and we take the lead in 59th minute when Burrow capitalises on a horrendous mix up in their defense and passes the ball into an empty net. We look in control until they get an equaliser on the 85th minute… it gets wiped out due to another offisde decision. We have been VERY VERY lucky today. We win the game 2-1 but this is a stark reminder that there is much more football to be played and we need to focus.

The FA cup draw takes place and we get Gainsborough. They are in the division below us and it is an away game so no cash boost here.

Back to the league and we have Spennymoor. We need to focus after the last game. There is only one issue, we have the FA cup game 3 days after this. Shall I rest players for this and aim for FA cup progression or play full strength in the league and worry about the cup later? Lots to ponder.

On a separate note, I win manager of the month, which I know will be the kiss of death.

Anyway, the game against Spennymoor arrives. Decisions have been made. I go with back up players for the league game except for both Centre backs and I keep Simons and Burrow. I have a small points lead in the league and I would like to keep getting money from FA cup draws.

The game starts and we are playing well. We take the lead after half an hour when Simons grabs his first. He heads in a lovely floated cross from McLaughlin. 10 minutes later he grabs a second, volleying a flicked on header from just outside the 6 yard box. This is a good half and I tell the players not to lose focus at half time. I also sub Burrow off so that he can be partially rested for the FA cup.

On the hour mark, Simons gets his hat trick, we deliever a cross into the box and with lots of confusion and mayhem, Simons smashes it into an empty net. I sub Simons off straight away and sub off Allan (CB). The rest of the game is quite pedestrian, they grab a consolation goal but I’m not too worried. The FA cup is already in my mind.

It is here! FA cup day. I have a completely rested midfield and full backs. We are playing Gainsborough. They are a divison below but fixtures like this are ALWAYS a potential banana skin. To add more worries, both my CB’s are out, one with illness the other a short term injury.

We start the game well, hitting the bar after 10 minutes. We take the lead 5 minutes later, Burrow volleys in from a free kick. A great way to start a game. We double our lead on the 37th minute when a ball over the top from Griffiths sets Simons free and he hits it across the keeper, post and in. We go in at half time 2-0 up. I passionately tell the players to keep it up. After 70 minutes, I change tactic and give some players a rest and minutes to others. We finish the game 2-0 winners and make £11k in the process.

We have played 4 and won 4. Gained £18,000 for the finances and am in the next round of the FA cup. Things are looking rosy but as with all things FM, it can’t last long, can it?

What are your guys views on the FA cup? Do you love it still or do you see it as a distraction?
Let me know!
FA Cup in lower leagues can be a distraction, but when you draw a big team and get some good receipts/tv money it's a nice bonus. Really good month that as well!
