These were players that I knew would never stay long at the club and/or would be a calculated gamble that I could afford to take. Some have been very successful and others I made enough money to be satisfied plus 1 lucky escape!
Format: Player and position, Club and purchase Price, Year Purchase and Seasons at United,
Club that bought him and Sale Price.
1.
Dani Olmo (AMC), Dinamo Zagreb £16.25M, Season 2020\21 and played 3 full seasons at United,
Real Madrid for £86M.
PROFIT: £69.75M
Reason for sale: Dani is Spanish and as soon as a big club like Madrid make an offer for him, he was very interested to go. They scouted him for about 4months and every time he spoke to the media, he said that he would love to move to Madrid. Nothing I could do, he made it very clear that he wanted to leave. I got as much value as I could for him and to be honest his last season at United was not great.
2.
Marcelo Brozonvic (B2B Mid), Real Madrid £30M, Season 2021\22 and played 1.5 seasons at United,
Barcelona for £52M.
PROFIT: £22M
Reason for sale: Brozo was great and a player that I loved but his heart was not at United. As soon as Barca said they were interested, he wanted to leave. I offered him a new and improved contract that he signed but that still was not enough. It was a painful transfer and hard for me to accept.
3.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (DLP), Chelsea £25.5M, Season 2019\20 and played 3.5 season at United,
Wolves for £40M
PROFIT: £14.5M
Reason for sale: Ruben was very impressive and he was the reason why I won the Europa Cup against Napoli. He contributed a lot to the team but after many injuries I decided that I had to sell him before his contract ran down. Each season he would play less and less. The offer from Wolves was too good to say no.
4.
Douglas Arezo Martinez (AF), River Plate de Montivideo £5M, Season 2020\21 and played 2 seasons at United (but 1 season was on loan at Bransley)
Huddersfield for £9.5M
PROFIT: £4.5M
Reason for sale: He was a Wonderkid who could not perform at the highest level. He would need 4 chances to score 1 goal. His record in the U23 squad was amazing but when put him in the 1st team he would sometimes score but he was not reliable. When put out on-loan he scored exactly what I expected… 12 goals for the season. His loan time at Barnsley helped make a good sale price but I was sure he was not a United Player. He has never scored more that 14 goals in a season. A lucky escape and a bad situation made into a profitable one!
