In a surprising move, Atalanta have had a poor season by their recent standards. Disappointing in the Champions League and especially the Serie A, has led them to dispensing of Gian Piero Gasperini. With what he’s achieved during his almost four years at the helm brought him special dispensation to allow him the time to rectify the situation, but unfortunately it wasn’t forthcoming. And with away trips to Juventus and Inter Milan, things would’ve got worse.
But Atalanta moved swiftly to appoint Gasperini’s successor, in the shape of Milan de Koningh. Who had been out of work since leaving his Ajax coaching job, in July of last year in the hope of getting his foot on the managerial ladder. And with Atalanta hovering above the relegation zone by a mere 3 points, the upper management decided it was best to act now.
”It’s with great sadness that we’ve parted way with Gian Piero Gasperini. Helping us to a 4th, 7th and 3rd place finishes. Getting us into the Champions League group stages, something the club has never achieved before. And we’re hoping that Milan will create a renaissance and save this season.”
”I’ve got a great affinity with Italy, obviously through my father. And even though it’s been with Inter, i will give my all to the La Dea cause. This club has all the makings of being successful. Gasperini for all he did, he never brought any silverware to this club. That’s my aim. In Atalanta’s 113 year existence, we’ve only ever won a Copa Italia back in 1963, a few Serie B’s and Serie C, aren’t good enough for a club like this. I’m going to change that.”
