In a surprising move, Atalanta have had a poor season by their recent standards. Disappointing in the Champions League and especially the Serie A, has led them to dispensing of Gian Piero Gasperini. With what he’s achieved during his almost four years at the helm brought him special dispensation to allow him the time to rectify the situation, but unfortunately it wasn’t forthcoming. And with away trips to Juventus and Inter Milan, things would’ve got worse.

But Atalanta moved swiftly to appoint Gasperini’s successor, in the shape of Milan de Koningh. Who had been out of work since leaving his Ajax coaching job, in July of last year in the hope of getting his foot on the managerial ladder. And with Atalanta hovering above the relegation zone by a mere 3 points, the upper management decided it was best to act now.

”It’s with great sadness that we’ve parted way with Gian Piero Gasperini. Helping us to a 4th, 7th and 3rd place finishes. Getting us into the Champions League group stages, something the club has never achieved before. And we’re hoping that Milan will create a renaissance and save this season.”

”I’ve got a great affinity with Italy, obviously through my father. And even though it’s been with Inter, i will give my all to the La Dea cause. This club has all the makings of being successful. Gasperini for all he did, he never brought any silverware to this club. That’s my aim. In Atalanta’s 113 year existence, we’ve only ever won a Copa Italia back in 1963, a few Serie B’s and Serie C, aren’t good enough for a club like this. I’m going to change that.”

Good luck!

Some job to turn around here. Good luck.

A season of hope, optimism and exciting new surroundings, became a season of dread, pessimism and painful reminders that Atalanta weren’t as good as Gasperini had many believed them to be. The end of February saw the end of Gasperini as Atalanta dangled perilously close to the relegation places, sitting just 3 points above Genoa and a huge 19 points behind 6th place, Sampdoria.

In walked Milan de Koningh and Atalanta seemed revitalised. First up was a daunting trip away to Champions, Juventus who were battling Inter at the top but de Koningh’s impact was instant.

“Was a brilliant all round performance, i told the boys beforehand to believe in themselves and one another and know that we’re just as good as Juventus. And today showed that. It also helps when the donkey (Szczesny) drops an absolute clanger. How he can believe he’s better than Alisson and Buffon is beyond me. Delusions of grandeur.”

Despite drawing with Inter away from home, Atalanta didn’t do enough to overturn the 1-0 defeat from the first leg. A late Lukaku goal put Inter into the final. But the month of March went from strength to strength as the La Dea climbed the table and advanced to the Europa League Quarter Finals, only to face A.S Roma.

Despite the heartbreak of going out to Roma on away goals, despite dominating and leading by 2 goals in both legs, de Koningh was clearly distraught at going out.

”I’m stood here shocked and flabbergasted at just how lucky Roma are to get through to the Semi-Final. We threw the tie away in both games and it’s unacceptable. And now we’ve got Paulo Fonseca thinking he’s the second coming of Jurgen Klopp. When in reality he’s just got the luck of the irish firmly in his pocket. This is going to hurt for a long time, especially if they go onto win it. But the tides will change and we’ll get the better of Roma and Fonseca in due time.”

But they didn’t let it affect their league form as the La Dea continued their ascent up the table with wins over Parma, Lazio and Genoa.

The final month of the season proved to be a frustrating one. Even though they remained undefeated since Milan took charge, and finished with 8 points in 4 games, the goals seemed to dry up as they could only get 4 goals in those 4 games. And in April, de Koningh started to revamp his squad as he done a deal for Josip Ilicic to go to Manchester United for a tidy sum of £40 million. And Gomez decided to choose Wolves over Leicester for the exact fee as Ilicic, as de Koningh began to reshape his aging squad. And with Remo Freuler, Hans Hateboer and Timothy Castagne all demanding new and improved contracts, which Milan said he’d fulfill at the end of the season, but that wasn’t good enough for the influential trio. Can de Koningh tempt them to stay? Or will he allow them to leave to continue his rebuilding of the squad.

Milan did punch the air as Lazio triumphed over their Arch-Rivals in the Europa League Final, giving them an Italy another club in the Champions League. Leaving de Koningh to think, what if!

Keen to see what the team will look like at the end of the rebuild.
