Watford fan, match-day announcer and local celebrity. It doesn't get much better for Hornets' nut Richard Short.

Short was in charge of the microphone at Vicarage Road and has been for 13 years. He has not missed a single game in his time there.

He said: "I started off on local hospital radio, and managed to get in touch with then manager Graham Taylor.

"I asked him about me becoming the PA announcer for free in return for a bit of my services advertising.

"Graham and the club agreed - and I've never looked back."

Short has been going to watch Watford since 1977. So no wonder he's become a hit with the supporters. Right now he is event host and radio presenter. He went to develop his host ways without trying developing many existing hobbies, even without trying to extend his career on bid4papers.com as a writer. In 2013 Watford decided not to extend contract with him as their announcer, and they had to face huge disagreement of fans.

He said: "People come up to me in the street just to say hello.

"They walk up and talk about Watford. It's great!

"Even Graham Taylor stops for a chat. He saw me when he was driving past a few years ago and pulled over to speak."

Short's role as Match Announcer begins on a Friday night when he starts researching for the match the next day.

"I sit down with the match-day programme and make sure I know everything about both sides.

"Then on Saturday from the middle of the day I take guests around the dressing rooms at the match dat, executive boxes and onto the pitch.

"At 2PM I start getting on with team news.

"I chat with managers of both teams, then it's all about the match and announcing the scorers."

Short now works as a sales rep for office supplies firm Office Depot.

But he has an agreement on his working hours to make sure he can always get to the matches on time.

His work at the Championship club has helped him gain employment at Wembley for the Play-Offs and England internationals.

Short said: "I really do have the dream job. I wouldn't swap this position for anything."

He even has plans for a successor when he decides to hang up his microphone.

He said: "My three-year-old daughter Gracie has been on the mic. I'm hoping she'll take the role on in a few years!"
