It feels like the most successful thing I can do is lots of pressing and get stuck in. It makes me win more matches, but I often have 5+ yellow cards.

Try that new triple tactic that has been posted. You'll win and not pick up lots of bookings.
check how your players react when they are defending
you need to go to tactic screen and click 'out of possession' option
check tackling, if you ticked 'get stuck in' try to change it to 'stay on feet'
same with tight marking, maybe just leave it out.
you can also add offside option, and move your defense line bit higher
Most likely players has a high Dirtiness in hidden attributes. Side effect to tackle harder. Rotation is always a good thing. Hehe
