Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2024/25 End of the season report - A season to remember

Premier League

We ended the last update in decent form, and I'm pleased to report that it continued. Winning our next three PL games essentially secured us the 5th position, which is highly likely to guarantee a UCL qualification spot. Due to fixture congestion and some bad luck, we couldn't secure wins in the following three matches. However, we managed to regain our momentum and finished the season with three consecutive victories in the league.

Spurs ended the season with couple of bad results, so we actually managed to get enough points for top 4 finish!

Europa League

As mentioned, we progressed to the knockout stage after winning the League Phase with a record of 7-1-0, with the only draw coming against AC Milan, a team considered European giants due to their history in the UCL.

While we maintained strong form domestically, we were surprised in France as Rennes defeated us 2-0 in the first leg of our R16 match-up. Considering the expected goals, a 1-2 scoreline would have been a fairer result, so I wasn't overly concerned about the outcome. As anticipated, we delivered a decisive 4-0 victory when Rennes visited Selhurst Park, with their former player Adrien Truffert dealing the final blow.

The quarter-finals pitted us against Ajax. Starting at Selhurst Park, we took an early 2-0 lead within 8 minutes, putting us in a strong position to advance further in the European journey. We scored another goal in our home game and left the Johan Cruyff Arena with a 2-0 victory firmly secured. Over the matchup we were clearly the better side and quite dominantly so.

In the semi-finals, we faced Athletic Bilbao at their San Mamés stadium, where the eventual UEL final would take place. Our initial match in Basque country concluded in a relatively uneventful 1-1 draw. Despite dominant performances earlier in the tournament, I briefly wondered if we had finally met our match. However, Selhurst Park once again proved to be the difference-maker as we secured a 3-1 victory in our home game. While Athletic proved to be a formidable opponent, but when you deliver an xG of over 4.0 in the decisive match, more often than not you come out on top.

By this point, we had already secured a top 4 finish in the PL and a UCL spot. However, winning trophies is much more fun and exciting than becoming 4th, so in my mind we had all to play for. In the final, we faced AC Milan, the only team we had faced and not beaten on our path to the final.

We didn't have the best start to the final, with AC Milan scoring via a deflected shot from outside the box. We maintained control of the game, so I wasn't overly concerned with that. The match clock was ticking fast, and it took almost an hour of football when substitute Marcos Leonardo finally equalized from inside the box. Feeling the game was within our grasp, I maintained an attacking tactic. Just as it seemed we might be headed to overtime, one of our original players, Michael Olise, had other plans, executing a stunning finesse shot to the upper benjamins in the 92nd minute, securing us a 2-1 victory and the UEL trophy!

Crystal Palace F.C. the winners of the major European Trophy!!!

Stats of the season 2024/25

Player stats PL and UEL

We had 9 regulars in the green on the PL and 13 players in the green in UEL, so its fair to say it took everybody's effort to achieve great things this season. Johan Bakayoko has turned into great threat delivering 6 goals and 10 assists in just 26 games. It took me half a season to understand that he is a key player on our assymetric 3-4-2-1 tactic and boy did he deliver on the second half of the season.

Our first season signing Samed Baždar delivered 25 goal involvements over our PL and UEL campaigns and he has turned into a great player for us, although not at striker position where I signed him.

Our bargain bin signing Jesper Lindstrøm delivered decent returns with great avg ratings and was definitely worth the fee of £2,4M.

Team stats

Our tactics are working pretty much as they are supposed to be. We were predicted to finish 7th in the league, we finished 4th and actually created the highest xG in the league. The pitch is constantly tilted into our favor as well, and we don't have the high posession numbers because we pass the ball around our own half.

We also scored 13 goals more and conceded 11 goals less than what we did on our first year with Crystal Palace marking a clear improvement in performance.

This was our tactic for pretty much the second half of the season. During that time we went 13-3-3 in the the league and won the UEL. On the 6 PL games we didn't win, we had clearly the better xG on two occasions and we were only outplayed few times, so I think we are on a great trajectory to achieve even greater things on the future.

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2025/26 - Summer transfers of 2025

In an effort to keep my posts more concise, I'll dedicate a separate update to the transfers.

Despite a flurry of transfers during my tenure at Palace, I felt it was time to stabilize the squad. However, one significant issue clouded our otherwise sunny horizon: the situation with our key player, Marc Guéhi. With only one year left on his contract and interest from clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Manchester United, Guéhi refused to sign a new contract with the club.

Seeing no possibility of changing his mind, I couldn't risk losing a player valued at £60M for free, so I chose to sell him. Despite aiming for £80M, £75M, or even £70M, I received low-ball offers and settled for £66M, which was still a considerable sum. The funds came from the Saudi government, but instead of moving to the dunes, Guéhi landed in Tyne as Newcastle United made the highest bid for him. Guéhi played 69 games (nice) for me at the club and his avg rating was 6,98. I guess you sould say he was good but not great, pretty much like Joachim Andersen who we sold for little less 6 months ago.

A few weeks later, we received another offer from Saudis, this it was Al-Ahli bidding £60M for Cheick Doucouré. Although Manu Koné had taken his place in the starting XI, Doucouré remained a vital player for us. He had been with the club before my arrival, but his dissatisfaction with my management style, combined with his lackluster training performances, prompted the decision to sell him. £60M is more than a fair price for him.

Other notable sales included Mike Mármol, who joined the newly-promoted Norwich City for £35M, generating a £19M profit after only a year with us. Additionally, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was sold to relegated Leicester for £19.5M. Rak-Sakyi had performed well in our first year with the club few seasons ago, but his role had diminished, making it the right time for him to move on.

We also offloaded several young players whose contracts were set to expire year from now, making a grand total of £206.5M for the sales in the summer.

I aimed to make a profit on the transfers and we achieved that by bringing in four new players for a total sum of £142M.

Our first signing of the summer was a familiar face for the fans of Crystal Palace as Conor Gallagher joined the club for a free transfer as his contract runned out at Chelsea. The £50K weekly wage is quite reasonable and he turned down Barcelona to join us, so he already won lot of fans including myself over. Gallagher is an excellent team player, boasting a work rate of 19, teamwork of 15, and stamina of 18. He is set to provide backup for Koné in the Ball-Winning Midfielder (Support) role and can also operate as a left or right midfielder, already demonstrating great success as a defensive winger (Support). His status as a Home Grown (HG) player adds further value to the team.

Our next signing was also an Englishman but 7 years younger and £55M more expensive than Gallagher as we lured Ethan Nwaneri from Arsenal to Southern London. At 18-years-old he is younger than our signings usually are but he already has great physical attributes in speed and agility and has some great technical and mental attributes for player of his age as well. He is natural at several positions but we'll be looking to play him as an attacking midfielder behind the striker.

As we sold Guéhi, it was time to bring in a central defender as well. I had prepared well for the sale but there weren't many central defenders I found exciting. Belgian Zeno Debast had a release clause of £27 in his contract with Anderlecht and as he already had great attributes in key requirements for a good central defender, I was happy enough to sign him.

At this point we hade over £100M left in the transfer budget but I was quite happy with the team and thought we hade made our signings. However, I felt Debast wasn't as good as Guéhi and I really don't like to go backwards. Therefore, I wanted to sign the best central defender I could.

That player was an FM favourite Giorgio Scalvini, who I have never managed at any save game despite having always scouted and sometimes even trying to sign him. He joined us for a fee of £60M which could eventually rise to £74M if he performs well. With anticipation of 18, positioning of 17 and concentration, team work, work rate and jumping reach of 16 to go wtih good technical skills he is an excellent defender who at 21 years of age is hopefully only getting better. Our system demands more from defenders than some other system's but I feel confident in Scalvini's ability to defend on 1-to-1 situations against any player we might face.

With a signing of Scalvini our ideal XI could look something like this and we have a great back up for each player as well.

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2025/26 - Q1 Report - Strong start for the season

Premier League & domestic cups

We have started the PL well with a record of 6-2-1. 3-0 win over Man City was our best result at the domestic soil, but draws against Manchester United and especially against Leeds United were rather frustrating. Our recent loss against Aston Villa was the worst peeformance for a good while, but otherwise the start has been pretty good and we are 4th in the league.

Having faced both larger and smaller teams I reckon we'll be around the top 4 again, come end of the season. I think at this point that would be a good goal for the season.

Champions League

We've had a great start for the season on the European soil as well. The game against Feyenoord was too open for my liking but at least we didn't lose that game. The 3-0 win over Real Madrid is a match that will be remembered amongst the Crystal Palace faithfull for a long time.

I think great target for the UCL run would be to qualify for the knockout stage and provide some exciting moments for our fans.

Player-wise Marcos Leonardo is finally enjoying some great goalscoring form and I'll be looking to give him more opportunities in our PL games over Elye Wahi who has 6 goals and 2 assists on 9 PL games himself. Or perhaps I need to shift my tactics a little and try to play with two up front.
A tycoon takeover

I think this might be the very first time I've had a tycoon takeover on FM despite playing the game for 10+ years. But the club has been taken over by Huyn-Woo Jung, who already put some money into the club.

We have made profit in each of our two years with Palace but we haven't been able to invest money into facilities and youth recruitment, because for some reason we were always projected to make a heavy loss. I can see that this has already changed, so hopefully we can make some investments to facilities, which would greatly boost the club's future.

Talk about luck! What an exciting new chapter this could be for Palace.

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2025/26 - Halfway season report - Still going strong

Premier League and EFL Cup

We started the season with a record of 6-2-1 and in the next 10 games we more or less kept that pace with a record of 6-3-1.

The only loss came against 19th placed Luton Town in a game which I tried to give more opportunities to the squad players, but its fair to say I need to think twice about rotating that heavily in the future. In a way, it's better to lose against somebody you are not competing against, so I'm not too disappointed. The team responded well with a 6-1 win over our main rivals Brighton, so I'm pleased with the lads.

Player-wise Elye Wahi has proved to be quite a streaky finisher. He went 10 hours without scoring but has since scored 6 times on 6 games.

We were also eliminated from the EFL cup against Arsenal. It would have been nice to go to the final, but I'm not too disappointed about the result.

We are actually leading the league at halfway point, but teams below as have played less games than us and Chelsea could jump as quite easily. The top teams are packed within few points, so there is everything to play for on the second half of the season!

Champions League

We have played three more games since the last update but have only managed to win 1 of them. Then again we still haven't lost on Europe, so its not too bad. Celtic is actually 5th in the League Phase, so they aren't as easy opponent as I perhaps thought.

We are 7th on the League Phase, so we should at the very least qualify for the Knockout Playoff round. Our remaining two games against Liverpool and RB Leipzig won't be easy, though.

Player stats for the PL and UCL, as well as a player profile of our best performer can be found on the spoiler below:

I signed Samed Baždar for £6M to be a 3rd choice striker but he has been an excellent player for us. He has turned out to be a great Shadow Striker and that role allows him both score and great goals whilist using his great physical atributes too.

Transfer window is opening soon and we have around £50M in the transfer budget, but I'm not sure if there is a need to spend it. There are few younger players I'm hoping to sign for a free come next summer but I don't know if we need more first teamers without selling players first. There are no weak links at our team either, although our back up GK could be better.

Chelsea haven't really played Levi Colwill, but they are not letting him go for cheap either. Colwill has had an ACL injury in the game, so I'm not too sure what's left of his amazing potential. He feels like a luxury signing with massive risks attached to him, so it might not be the wisest move to break the bank for him, I don't always like to be smart though, so let's see what the future holds.
Seems like I can't quote your reply @Jack but Absolutely!

Let's see what the future holds. I try to be realistc and lead the club responsibly but I don't know if I can control myself if the owner gives me massive amounts to spend.

We are already projected to have quite a nice budgets for the coming seasons.

I'd be happier to spend the money for a new stadium, for example. Selhurst Park only holds 25k people, and there isn't an option to expand it, so the only option could be to move to a new stadium. Our avg attendance is the 16th lowest in the league, but we have sold out all of our home games for this season.
Tremendous effort in the Champs League, particularly that 3-0 win over Real Madrid, I'm sure that won't be forgotten in a hurry! A wonderful display in the league too, despite the pending games in hand from the teams below (though I'd rather have points on the board than games in hand).

The finances look excellent and I agree with you r.e. the new stadium if you're already selling out week-in-week-out. Some additional funds towards transfers for seriously quality players wouldn't go amiss either to help you push on further!

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2025/26 - Q3 report - A Hiccup

We have not been doing too badly, per se, but the top end of the PL was tightly packed and even a series of small hiccups have probably dropped us from the title fight into a battle for UCL qualification.

We started well after the last update with a three wins in a row but we then failed to win the following three games. Our PL form has since improved with three wins on four matches ever since but I think Jack hit the nail on the head perfcetly when he said some seriously quality players would help us to push us further. We have nice starting XI but after that the quality drops and when we play three games within a week and have to rotate, that shows.

We were also eliminated from FA Cup by Wolverhapton, which is unfortunate but as our squad depth isn't as great as I thought, this might be a blessing in disguise.

We are currently on a second place in the league, which isn't too bad and this time we even have a game on hand compared to teams around us but it has started to look like Chelsea, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, is running away with the title. I'm little nervous that a massive team like Manchester City is lurking behind our backs and if they hit the form, they could surpass us but as the 5th placed team will qualify for the UCL as well, we are pretty well set for the rest of the season.

We'll face Aston Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle and the Manchester teams in our remaining nine games, so we won¨t have an easy ride to the UCL spot, though.

Champions League

We managed to grab a 6th place finish on the League Phase with a draw over Liverpool and thumping 6-1 win over RB Leipzig.

We faced Lille at the R16 phase and managed to beat them with ease despite having a poor form on the league at the time.

We'll face Atletico Madrid on the Quarter-Finals in a draw that was relatively kind to us. Atletico, managed by Antonio Conte, barely made the knockout phase with 10 points from 8 League Phase games and they are currently 4th on the La Liga. They have more or less the same squad they have IRL right now, except three years older. But on the other hand they are disciplined and experienced team, which seems to be the complete opposite to what we are, so we need to be at our best to beat them.

I have recently tuned our tactics a bit and pushed up the two DMs to CMs. This has at least allowed Manu Koné to make best of his strong physical and ball carrying abilities and he has responded with a couple of goals as you may have spotted from the resuls screenshot from earlier on the post.

Thanks to injuries and decent form, Ethan Nwaneri (who now has a face) has won the other starting AM spot for himself.

Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2025/26 - End of the Season Report - Looking for New ideas

We had a few hiccups in Q3, and unfortunately, that continued during the final quarter of our season. I'm pretty sure we experienced the worst spell of results during my time at Palace.

We continued our journey with a humbling 0-4 defeat to Aston Villa at Selhurst Park. I believe this match was a solid candidate for the worst performance under my reign, and the form didn't improve in the following matches either, as we lost to Chelsea and drew against lower mid-table clubs West Ham and Norwich.

We were falling out of the top 5, and we needed a change immediately. I switched to a boring but effective 4-3-3 system with inverted wing-backs. The system plays 2-3-4-1 while attacking, meaning we have a solid base to build from and can overload opponents' back four.

The boys responded with a commanding 6-1 win over top 4 hopefuls Newcastle United, and we won 3 out of the remaining 4 games afterwards. This was enough for a top 4 finish as Arsenal and Newcastle ended the season in poor form.

We scored the most goals in the league with 85 and if you think goals = excitement, we managed to offer some good times for our fans. This season felt worse than the last one but we actually got one more point than in a previous year. We scored 9 and conceded 13 more goals than on a previous campaign.

Champions League

Gladly the poor form at PL didn't show too much on the Europe.

We managed to beat Atletico Madrid with relative ease, as predicted. I felt the Atletico was way too passive and they only got 3 shots on target over the two-legged tie. We played very well ourselves, too.

In the semi-finals, we were drawn against Bayern Munich. At the time, we were going through a rough patch in the PL, and for a moment, I thought we might even need to win the UCL to qualify for the competition next season. The tie started at home, and we actually suffered our first defeat at home in Europe under my reign when Bayern left London with a 2-1 win. Although we played well at Allianz Arena, it looked like we could push the tie to extra time, but Moises Caicedo scored in the 80th minute, securing Bayern's passage to the final.

A 'Top 4' finish in the UCL is something we can be proud of, and we weren't truly outplayed by any of our opponents. This gives me some satisfaction and confidence in my ability as a manager, considering our wage bill isn't anywhere close to those of true European giants.

I'll return with a player stats and future plans soon!

Stats of the season 2025/26

Premier League player stats

8 players were on the green and 9 more players had an avg rating of at least 6,90, so plenty of our players had nice seasons.

Elye Wahi had a great season with 25 goals and 8 assists on the PL. I previously tried to rotate my strikers a bit, but Wahi started all but one of our PL games, so he had a great run of games and he wasn't punished from a bad game by benching on the next. I reckon this gave him more confidence

Conor Gallagher had a great first season with us as well and his versatility proved to be an important asset for us during the season in which we tailored our tactics quite a bit.

Champions League player stats

More or less the same players succeed on the Europe as well. Wahi got 10 goals on the UCL and Samed Baždar had an avg rating of 7,60 from the 12 games he played.

Team stats

On the spoiler below ypu can find our pitch tilt, general performance and xG table graphs. In general, these are fairly similar than last season.

Despite scoring more goals than last season, we generated less xG, which is slightly worrying.

The Future Plans

Going forward I'd like to see more from our right sided defenders. Iván Fresneda got mad when I didn't want to raise his £75k weekly wages but he was our worst performer on Europe and didn't do anythin special on the PL either, so I hardly see a reason to offer him more money. Maybe him or Agustín Giay could be on their way out but let's see what the summer brings.

I could sign Jeremie Frimpong (Green) from Leverkusen for around £50M, but I'm not sure he is an improvement over Fresneda (Blue).

I was more than disappointed at Perr Schuurs, who is our 5th highest earner with his £120k weekly wages. The player with 'Model Citizen' personality was constantly our worst trainer with training ratings around 6,50 - 7,00 and I think its time to sell him to another club.

Marcos "Goal ruled out for offside" Leonardo became a back-up striker for Elye Wahi, but at 23 years of age he still has room to improve and he has quite good attributes. Aston Villa has declared him as their top transfer target, but I'm not sure it makes sense to sell him. I'd need an £80M offer to even consider selling him.

I think Juan Sforza is a good player and has a role at this team but perhaps that role should be more of a squad player from now on and signing a better deep-lying / roaming playmaker could be a priority for us.

Tactics?

I played the remaining 10 or so games with the following tactic. This has sort of been my go-to tactic on previous FMs when things go south as this tactic always seems to work. But I've used it to death, which is why I labelled it as boring.

I know what style of football I want to play, as I want my teams to control games, score plenty of goals and limit the opposition to as few scoring chances as possible. I'm not sure about the formation though, and one could argue that the style is more important than the formation anyway.

I want to create a 2-3-4-1 or 3-2-4-1 formation when attacking and there are countless of formations which could achieve this.

On the other hand I quite like the idea of playing two up-front as that is increasingly rare to see in the modern football. I could try smilar 4-1-2-1-2 formation that Real Madrid uses IRL or perhaps Inter-esque 3-5-2 could work too, as we have three excellent central defenders in Pascal Struijk, Ousmane Diomande and Giorgio Scalvini.

I try to build my squads in a way that I have players for basically any formation imaginable, so I could try different tactics on the preseason and see what works and what doesn't.

I reckon Baždar or even Ethan Nwaneri could work well behing the striker at 4-1-2-1-2 formation but I'd like to have more physical striker next to Wahi.

Evan Ferguson has a realease clause of £100M and would fit a profile of more physical striker perfectly but the price is way too steep for us unless we get £80M for Marcos Leonardo and even then it would probably be stupid, yet alone unrealistic to pay £100M for our biggest rival's striker.

I've already signed two youngsters for a combined fee of little under £30M but I talk more about them on my next message when we take a look at who we eneded up signing.

Thanks for reading and as always, remember to have fun! Until next time!
Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2026/27 - Summer transfers of 2026

The summer of 2026 is almost over and I reckon we have made all of our transfers, so its time to see what dealings we made over the summer.

Let's start with the sales. We actually only made one major sale, which was Perr Schuur to Leeds United for £45M. We bought Schuurs for £40M 1,5 years ago to replace Joachim Andersen, and he never managed to grab a spot in the starting lineup. As a result he started to complain about his minutes and trained poorly, so he had to be sold. I forgot to mention this previously, but we also sold Jesper Lindstrøm for £36,5M to Hoffenheim in last January. We only paid £2,4M for him and he his already small role had further diminished, so it was a no-brainer to sell him for such hig fee.

We made six signings but didn't massively break the bank for any of them. The signings could be divided into two groups: Young players for the future and current first teamers.

Our first signing was an 18-year-old Danish wonderkid Tue Lund, who will spent the coming season on loan at FC Copenhagen. At £9,75M he was a relatively cheap transfer and he already has great attributes accross the board. His physicals could be better, but those will develope over time and he has all the time on his side. A big player for us in the future.

Our second signing was now 19-year-old goalkeeper Spike Brits from Manchester City for £19,75M. He was slightly more expensive signing what I realised but he'll be a more permanent solution for our back up GK role and over time he could challenge Mamardasvili for the starting role.

Our next signing was a young Englishman as well. I had scouted Archie Gray for a long time and as his contract was running out in a year, now was a perfect time to strike a deal with Leeds for £31M. He is only 20 years of age but already looks like a great roaming playmaker.

We needed cover for the LWB role and our scouts found 21-year-old Dane Patrik Dorgu, who fit the profile perfectly. His team Lecce had been relegated to Serie B, so he was available at mere £10,75M. He is fast and technically gifted player who has to develope his tackling and marking skills, but I'm sure he'll be a useful player for us.

Finally we signed a replacement for Perr Schuurs. The player we opted to sign was Croatian Luka Vušković from Tottenham for £39,5M. At 19-years of age he has plenty of time to develope his already solid attributes. On the hindsight, I may have overpayed a little for him, but if things to to plan, he'll be with us for a decade.

Player profiles of all the signings can be found on the spoiler below:

Tactics

I opted to go for a Inter-inspired 5-3-2 system and it has worked nice on the preseason. Again, this is not an attempt to emulate their tactics, but rather my creation inspired by Inter's IRL tactics.

Three central defenders should offer a solid base for us, midfield is filled with hard working and skilled players and two complete wing backs offer the width for the team. Two strikers are the main goal-scoring threats but I expect the midfielders and wing backs to chip in with few goals and assists, too.

Let's see how the system works when the PL starts in few days!

Thanks for reading and have fun!
Crystal Palace F.C. - Season 2026/27 - Q1 Start of a new campaign

We start our fourth season with Crystal Palace and have turned the lower mid-table club to European regulars and will start our second successive season at the UCL.

Our journey at the Palace has started extremely well but soon the focus turns on taking the next steps towards challenging for the titles at PL and UCL.

I haven't been able to find players that would instantly add massive boost for our title hopes, so I've taken the more patient approach in investing and developing younger players.

This season I want to see progress on the Premier League. We have become 4th twice in a row and I'd like us to push the very top teams little further this time around and lock our place on the next season's UCL little sooner than the last few gameweeks.

Premier League

We started the season extremely well results-wise as we won out first 6 games. The last 3 games have been little tougher with a record of 1-1-1, but we've faced teams on the upper side of the league table, so there is no need to panic.

After 9 games we are 3rd on the league, which is great result considering we have already faced several top teams such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester United.

Champions League

Our European campaign has started with two 3-0 wins and one 0-3 loss. Our guys were little tired against Feyenoord and the Dutch side punished us from our own easy mistakes. I think the players learned their lesson and will play better in the future.

Next-up on Europe are last season's winners Bayern München, who beat us on the semi-finals last time around and our domestic rivals Newcastle, so we have to put in great effort to get some points and secure an automatic qualification to knockout phase.

Tactics

This is very much a work in progress at this point, but I have moved from the 5-3-2 system to 5-2-1-2 instead.

Ethan Nwaneri is one of our very best players for the future, so he has to have a place on the starting lineup and it was hard to find a spot for him in 5-3-2.

We finally got to invest money in the academy, which is apparently now the best in the world, but we haven't managed to produce any players to our current first team yet and I truly hope this changes soon.

We recently finished adding more seats to the Selhurst Park as well and the stadium now holds 34 000 people.

From what I understand we can't expand it any further, and I think its still quite small stadium considering our improved status in the game, so let's see what the future holds stadium-wise.
