Lambert Joins as Patton Replacement

Bransay Athletic have lost right midfielder Shane Patton to Meltham Athletic, a club competing three divisions above in the Huddersfield & District Association League.

The 24-year-old, a Bransay Harbour native, played all nine of the Irons’ North Northumberland League matches this season, contributing six assists. Patton’s departure is a blow for the club, but fans will wish him well as he steps up to a higher level of football.

In response, Callum Baird has signed 30-year-old right midfielder Danny Lambert who joins after being released by Northern League Division Two side Billingham Synthonia.

Lambert, born in Stockton-on-Tees, previously played for Northallerton Town, Billingham Town, Newton Aycliffe, Spennymoor Town and Marske United. Lower league fans may also know him from making 13 appearances and scoring once for Darlington in the National League during the 2011/12 season.

After failing to secure a club in the summer, Lambert contacted Bransay and Baird directly, seeking to regain his match fitness and make an impact.

“Danny’s experience at higher levels will be invaluable for us,” said manager Callum Baird. “Shane was a big part of our squad but with Danny coming in, we’re confident we can keep pushing for promotion.”

Bransay currently sit 3rd in the North Northumberland League with 18 points after eight games, trailing Berwick Town (19 points) and Swarland (19 points). With Lambert now in the fold, The Irons aim to maintain their challenge for the title as the season progresses.

Bransay Take Top Spot

Bransay Athletic surged to the top of the North Northumberland League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Lowick United at Craik Park on Saturday.

The win, powered by goals from Liam Lightfoot, Marcel Byrne and Ardelan Ameen, marked four victories in their last five matches, propelling them one point clear of the chasing pack.

Bransay XI:: C Peel, M Haliva (C Uddgren 68’), J Dodd-Thompson, J McGettrick, T Weaver (J Roberts 79’), D Lambert, L Lightfoot, A Ameen, T Bailey, M Baker (A Seaton 79’), M Byrne.

The match saw the debut of new signing Danny Lambert, who replaced the departed Shane Patton on the right wing. Despite high expectations given Lambert’s experience, the 30-year-old had an underwhelming performance, struggling to make an impact against Lowick’s defence. Manager Callum Baird will hope the former Darlington man finds his feet soon in the coming fixtures.

Bransay opened the scoring in the 26th minute through a well-worked move. After interplay in midfield, Tom Bailey fed Ardelan Ameen, who broke forward and played the ball to Liam Lightfoot. The midfielder struck a slow but precise effort from 25 yards out, finding the top right corner past Lowick goalkeeper Jeff Fraser to make it 1-0.

The second goal arrived in the 62nd minute. Left-back Tom Weaver latched onto a clearance from Lowick’s Kingsley Babatunde, raced down the wing and delivered a low cross into the six-yard box, where Marcel Byrne slotted the ball beyond Fraser to double the lead.

Bransay sealed the win in the 89th minute with a swift counter-attack. Lightfoot picked up the ball in his own half and found Alex Seaton down the middle. Seaton turned neatly with one touch before spotting Ameen’s run to the left. Ameen took the ball into the box and slammed a powerful shot into the near left corner, beating the closing defenders to make it 3-0.

The victory continues Bransay’s strong run of form, following a win over Longhoughton Rangers at the end of November. With Berwick Town and Swarland playing out a 2-2 draw, Bransay now sit top of the league with 21 points after 10 games. Berwick Town, Alnmouth United - who beat North Sunderland Reserves - and Swarland are all on 20 points, with goal differences of 7, 4 and 2 respectively, making it a tight race at the top. North Sunderland Reserves, in 5th, trail by five points, suggesting the top four are starting to pull away as contenders for the North Northumberland League title.

Bransay’s next match is a crucial clash at Forge Road against 2nd-placed Berwick Town in a fortnight, which will see all teams pass the halfway point of the season with 12 games played. With the league race heating up, Bransay will need to be at their best to maintain their position at the summit.

A Reunion at the Alnwick Garden

On a brisk Saturday, Callum Baird found himself at The Alnwick Garden’s Treehouse Restaurant, a rustic spot nestled in Northumberland’s scenic countryside. The timing couldn’t have been better - just a week after his 3-0 win over Lowick United on 9th December and a week before the clash with Berwick Town at Forge Road.

With the North Northumberland League season at its midpoint, Bransay were sitting top of the table with 21 points, one point ahead of Berwick Town, Alnmouth United and Swarland. The pressure was on to maintain their lead and Baird was about to have a reunion that could shift his trajectory.

Baird was meeting an old friend from his days at Northumberland University: Ryan Metcalfe, a 28-year-old North East native who had helped Baird land his first role in football with Hartlepool United’s youth team. Back then, Metcalfe had been a rising academy scout at Hartlepool, scouring Sunday League and Saturday League matches across the North East for hidden gems - youngsters overlooked by bigger clubs like Newcastle United and Sunderland. Metcalfe’s knack for spotting talent had earned him respect and he’d been a key figure in Baird’s early career, mentoring him during his time at Hartlepool.

Since those days, Metcalfe had moved on from football. After leaving his scouting role at Hartlepool United earlier in 2023, he moved into a data analyst position with NorthSport Analytics, a Newcastle-based company specialising in data for sports teams across the continent. Now, instead of braving muddy pitches on weekends, Metcalfe crunched numbers to help teams optimise player performance and recruitment strategies. But his years at Hartlepool had left him with something valuable - a database of North East players he’d scouted, many of whom Hartlepool had passed on, deeming them not quite ready for their academy.

Over a cup of coffee in the Treehouse Restaurant, Metcalfe leaned back in his chair, a nostalgic smile on his face. “It’s been a while, Callum,” he said, adjusting his glasses. “I heard you’ve been doing wonders with Bransay Athletic. Top of the league, eh? Never thought you’d end up on an island managing a grassroots side, but it suits you.”

Baird chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “Cheers, Ryan. It’s been a ride, that’s for sure. We’re in a good spot, but we’ve got holes to fill. Losing our winger, Shane, last month hurt us and while we’ve got Danny Lambert who has got the experience, he’s still finding his feet. We need more quality if we’re going to stay ahead.”

Metcalfe nodded, sipping his coffee. “I’ve been following your results. That 3-0 against Lowick was a statement. But I’ve got something that might help you take it up a notch.” He leaned forward, lowering his voice. “When we were at Hartlepool, I built a database of players across the North East - lads from local leagues, some as young as 16, others in their early 20s. They’re the ones Newcastle, Sunderland, even Hartlepool passed on. I always thought they had potential, but the academy didn’t agree.”

Baird raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “And you’re saying these players could be good enough for us?”

“Exactly,” Metcalfe replied. “I’ve got names, contacts, even some basic stats - pace, work rate, goal records, that sort of thing. They’re not tied to Hartlepool anymore; the club didn’t pursue them. But because of confidentiality, data protection and whatever, this has to stay under the table. I can’t exactly hand over Hartlepool’s official scouting reports, but this is my personal database, built from my own observations.”

Baird leaned back, processing the offer. January was fast approaching, the perfect time for mid-season transfers and Bransay desired depth to sustain the title challenge. The North Northumberland League’s title was within reach but with Berwick Town, Alnmouth United and Swarland all on 20 points, there was not much room for error. “What kind of players are we talking about?” he asked.

Metcalfe pulled out his phone, scrolling through a list. “There’s a 22-year-old striker from South Shields, quick and good in the air, scored 15 in 20 for his Sunday League side last season. Then a 19-year-old central midfielder from Durham - great vision, just needs a proper system. And a 21-year-old full-back from Gateshead, aggressive tackler, loves to get forward. They might not want to live on Bransay, but if you can convince them to play for you, they could make a difference.”

Baird’s mind raced. The logistics would be tricky - players commuting to Bransay for matches wasn’t ideal and the ferry could be a hassle - but the potential upside was huge. “It’s a risk, Ryan, but we’re already punching above our weight. If these lads are as good as you say, they could keep us at the top.”

Metcalfe grinned, sliding a USB drive across the table. “It’s all on here - names, numbers, my notes. Just keep it quiet, yeah? I don’t want Hartlepool thinking I’m leaking their data, even if these players were ones they didn’t want.”

Baird pocketed the drive, a determined look in his eyes. “Thanks, Ryan. This could be a game-changer. We’ve got Berwick Town next and if we can hold onto top spot, maybe a few new faces in January will see us over the line.”

Bransay were at the top of the league but the race was far from over. With Metcalfe’s database in hand, Baird had a chance to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season - and keep the promotion dreams alive.

Bransay Sign Veteran Swailes

Bransay Athletic have made a stunning addition to their squad by signing 53-year-old centre-back Chris Swailes, officially the oldest registered footballer in England.

The Gateshead-born veteran, whose career spans over four decades, joins the North Northumberland League leaders as they push for promotion amd brings a wealth of experience from a remarkable journey through the English and Scottish footballing pyramids.

Swailes’ career began in 1989 at Ipswich Town’s academy before he moved to Peterborough United. He made his first-team debut at Boston United in the fifth tier during the 1991/92 season, playing 28 matches. A brief stint at Bridlington Town followed, where he made five appearances and won the FA Vase in 1992/93 while on loan, before breaking into the Fourth Division with Doncaster Rovers in 1993/94, where he played 49 league games.

In 1995/96, Swailes returned to Ipswich for £150,000 in the Championship, featuring in 33 league matches, before a £200,000 move to fellow Championship side Bury in 1997/98. At Bury, he made 126 appearances across the Championship and League One.

The defender’s career continued to flourish at Rotherham United in the Championship from 2001/02, where he played 167 matches, before a stint at League One’s Oldham Athletic in 2005/06, making 19 appearances over two seasons.

Swailes then ventured to Scotland, joining Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Championship in 2006/07. He helped them win promotion in 2007/08 and played 25 matches in the Scottish Premiership in 2008/09. Returning to England, Swailes signed for Gateshead in the National League in 2009/10, followed by a move to Blyth Spartans in the National League North the next season.

In 2011/12, Swailes joined Dunston, where he scored nine goals in 39 games from defence, helping them secure promotion while also winning the FA Vase - his second triumph in the competition. He spent two more seasons with Dunston in the Northern League Division One before moving to divisional rivals Morpeth Town in 2015/16. There, Swailes etched his name in history as the oldest-ever goalscorer in a Wembley final at 45, scoring in Morpeth’s 4-1 FA Vase win over Hereford - his third FA Vase title. A year later, he returned to Dunston as player-manager, guiding them to promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One before departing last season.

Manager Callum Baird expressed his excitement at the signing, highlighting Swailes’ dual impact on and off the pitch. “Chris is a legend of the game and at 53, he’s still got the physicality and nous to compete,” Baird said. “On the pitch, his positioning and leadership will help our defence, especially after losing Dillon Woodgate earlier this season. Off the pitch, his experience is invaluable - he’s played at every level, managed teams and won trophies. He’ll be a mentor for our younger players like and a guiding voice as we chase promotion.”

Swailes, speaking after putting pen to paper, explained his decision to join Bransay Athletic. “I might be 53, but I feel I’ve still got something to give,” he said. “I was born in Gateshead, so coming to Bransay feels like a homecoming of sorts - it’s not far from where I grew up and I’ve always wanted to play for a club with this kind of community spirit. When Callum reached out, I saw a team at the top of their league, fighting for promotion and I wanted to be part of that journey. I’m here to help on the pitch and share what I’ve learned over the years.”

Currently leading the North Northumberland League with 21 points after 10 games, Bransay Athletic are one point ahead of Berwick Town, Alnmouth United and Swarland. With the season at its midpoint, Swailes’ arrival could provide the edge needed to secure the title. His debut is eagerly awaited as Bransay face Berwick Town at Forge Road on 23rd December 2023, in a match that could prove pivotal in the title race.

We started November with a frustrating 2-0 loss to Alnmouth United at Hotspur Park, despite dominating much of the game. In the 29th minute, Liam Langston sent a ball down the right to Rees Catterson, who swung a high cross into the six-yard box for Blaine Kellacher to head past Chay Peel, who should’ve done better. Things worsened in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when James Dodd-Thompson fouled Kellacher in the box as a Louis Evans cross came in, leading to a penalty that Ola Holmes converted into the left corner.

A fortnight later, we responded with a hard-fought 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Longhoughton Rangers at Forge Road. Tom Weaver received a pass from Ardelan Ameen down the left, delivering a low cross into the six-yard box where Marcel Byrne was fouled by Sam Rounsfell. Before the referee could blow for a penalty, Joaquim Silva followed up to tap into an empty net in the 76th minute.

December began with a 3-0 away win against Lowick United at Craik Park. Ardelan Ameen set up Liam Lightfoot, who looped a 25-yard strike over goalkeeper Jeff Fraser in the 26th minute. Tom Weaver provided the second, crossing low for Marcel Byrne to score at the near post in the 62nd minute. Alex Seaton assisted the third, playing a through ball for Ameen to slam into Fraser’s near post in the 88th minute.

Our final game of the year was an early title decider against 2nd-placed Berwick Town at Forge Road and we secured a 3-0 victory. Ardelan Ameen sent a long ball over the top to new signing Danny Lambert on the right, who crossed for Joaquim Silva to square to Marcel Byrne for a simple finish in the 39th minute. In the 71st minute, Silva played Byrne through, who beat his man, turned and squared for Tom Bailey to score. In the 5th minute of stoppage time, Lambert grabbed his first assist for us, driving to the edge of the area and cutting back for Rui Sterry to fire into the near right corner from 20 yards past Ashley Williams.

After 12 games, we’re top of the North Northumberland League with 24 points. Alnmouth United are our closest challengers on 23 points, while Berwick Town and Swarland sit on 20 points each. Lowick United have 16 points in 5th, followed by North Sunderland Reserves on 15. Longhoughton Rangers and Ellington Under 21s are level on 10 points, with Rangers showing signs of improvement under Wolfgang Brunner. We’ve scored 26 goals - more than anyone - and our goal difference of 12 is double that of Alnmouth, giving us a strong position as we head into the second half of the season.

Bransay Bolster Attacking Options with Selby Man

Bransay Athletic have kicked off January with the signing of 23-year-old striker Flynn McNaughton, adding firepower to their North Northumberland League title chase.

McNaughton, who arrives after his contract with Selby Town in the NCEL Division One ended, brings a pedigree from higher divisions, marking his first venture below County League level.

McNaughton’s career began at York City’s academy, where he made three appearances in the National League in 2018. He then had a brief spell at Scarborough Athletic, playing once in the NPL Premier Division before joining Pickering Town in the NPL Division One where he scored nine goals in 28 appearances.

In the 2020/21 season, he moved to Selby Town, scoring eight goals in 14 games and played 11 matches for Bridlington Town in the first half of the 2021/22 season, scoring twice. Returning to Pickering Town that same season, he added two goals in six games. McNaughton made 11 appearances for Selby Town in the NCEL Division One during last season.

The move to the North Northumberland League, a step down from his previous clubs comes as a surprise. Sources suggest McNaughton sought a fresh start after struggling for game time at Selby Town this season compounded by a desire to rediscover his love for the game in a new environment. Bransay, currently top of the league with 24 points after 12 games, offered an ambitious project that appealed to the young striker.

Manager Callum Baird was effusive about the signing, highlighting McNaughton’s potential to elevate the team. “Flynn’s a proven goalscorer at higher levels and at 23, he’s got his best years ahead of him,” Baird said. “With Peel in goal, Swailes at centre-back, Lightfoot and Ameen controlling midfield and now Flynn up top, we’ve got a strong spine to build around. His movement and finishing will give us a new dimension as we push further this year.”

McNaughton, speaking after completing his move, explained his decision to join Bransay. “I needed a change to get back to enjoying my football,” he admitted. “I’ve played at higher levels, but the last few months at Selby were tough with limited minutes. When Callum called, I saw a club at the top of their league, with a clear goal of promotion and I wanted to be part of that. It’s a step down in division, but not in ambition - I’m here to score goals and help Bransay take that next step.”

Bransay Athletic now look formidable as they head into the second half of the season, with McNaughton’s arrival strengthening an already solid core. The striker could make his debut in the upcoming match against Ellington Under 21s at Forge Road, where fans will hope to see him open his account and keep the team on track for promotion.

Butterfield In, McGettrick Out at Bransay

Bransay Athletic have parted ways with centre-back Jody McGettrick, who has joined Pollington in the York League Division One.

The 22-year-old, who played 12 games for Bransay this season, moves up several divisions in search of a new challenge. McGettrick’s departure follows a solid run in the North Northumberland League, where Bransay currently lead with 24 points after 12 matches.

McGettrick had been a reliable presence in defence alongside James Dodd-Thompson and later veteran Chris Swailes, helping the team maintain a strong defensive record with a goals conceded record of 14. His exit to Pollington, a club competing at a higher level, marks a step up for the young defender, but leaves Bransay needing to fill the gap as they chase the title.

Swift to act, Bransay have secured the signing of 24-year-old centre-back Michael Butterfield as McGettrick’s replacement. Butterfield joins after being released by Northern League Division Two side Billingham Synthonia, who currently sit 4th in the playoff spots of their division. The defender was also let go by Willington, another Northern League Division Two club, last season, after struggling for regular game time. Despite his recent setbacks, Butterfield brings experience from a higher level, having played at Step 6 of the English football pyramid and will look to solidify Bransay’s backline alongside the 53-year-old Swailes.

Manager Callum Baird commented on the transfer activity, saying, “Jody’s been a great servant for us and we wish him all the best at Pollington - it’s a fantastic opportunity for him on the mainland. Michael coming in gives us a young, hungry defender who’s played at a higher level. He’s eager to prove himself and I’m confident he’ll fit in well as we push for the title.”

Bransay Athletic remain focused on their promotion campaign, with upcoming fixtures against Swarland and North Sunderland Reserves set to test their revamped squad. Fans will hope Butterfield can quickly adapt and help maintain the team’s position at the top of the table.

Forster Joins Bransay as Bailey joins LIV Supplies

Bransay Athletic have moved quickly to reinforce their squad by signing left midfielder Ewan Forster following his release from Northern League Division Two side Thornaby.

The transfer comes after the departure of Bransay’s left midfielder Tom Bailey, who has joined LIV Supplies FC in Hull, a club founded around a building materials supplier.

Bailey, who made nine appearances for Bransay this season, contributed one goal and two assists during his time with the club. His only goal came in a crucial 3-0 win over Berwick Town on 23rd December 2023, helping Bransay secure top spot in the North Northumberland League.

The move to LIV Supplies FC offers Bailey a fresh challenge at a club known for its unique community ties, but his exit left Bransay needing a replacement on the left flank as they aim to maintain their lead in the title race.

Joining the club is Ewan Forster, a 21-year-old left midfielder with experience at Step 6 of the English football pyramid. Forster joined Thornaby at the start of the 2023/24 season after time with Esh Winning but struggled for minutes, making just two appearances before mutually agreeing to part ways with the club.

Prior to that, Forster had a successful two-year spell with Crook Town in the Northern League Division Two, where he made 47 appearances and scored four goals across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

Manager Callum Baird expressed optimism about Forster’s arrival, stating, “Tom Bailey gave us some great moments this season and we wish him well in Hull. Ewan Forster is a fantastic replacement - he’s got experience in the Northern League, a good work rate and can chip in with goals from midfield. He’s hungry to play regularly and I’m confident he’ll help us stay at the top of the league.”

Currently leading the North Northumberland League with 27 points after 15 games, Bransay Athletic are level on points ahead with Alnmouth United, with Swarland on 27 points and Berwick Town on 26 points. Forster’s signing adds depth to a squad already bolstered by recent arrivals like Chris Swailes, Flynn McNaughton and Michael Butterfield. The left midfielder could make his debut in the upcoming match against Alnmouth United at Forge Road, where Bransay will look to extend their lead in the race for promotion.

We kicked off 2024 with a 4-0 home win over Ellington Under 21s at Forge Road. Danny Lambert started the scoring in the 17th minute, swinging a cross from the right for Marcel Byrne to head in at the far post. Liam Lightfoot made it 2-0 in the 29th minute, winning a 50/50 ball and striking a 20-yard effort across goal. Flynn McNaughton notched his first assist for us in the 56th minute, nodding down a Lambert free-kick for Tom Weaver to volley in from seven yards. Lambert capped the performance in the 84th minute, delivering a corner that Byrne headed in at the near post, beating goalkeeper Jai Moan’s attempted punch.

Our second game saw us lose 3-1 to title contenders Swarland at Vyner Park. Swarland took an early lead in the 7th minute through MacAuley Wearmouth, who headed in an Emile Coulibaly corner. Robert Stewart set up Connor Duffy at the near post to make it 2-0 in the 36th minute and Jarrett Desmond’s first-time cross found Max Simpson for a tap-in in the 51st minute. We pulled one back in the 73rd minute when Ardelan Ameen’s ball over the top found Marcel Byrne, who drove a low shot under Scott Sampson, but it was merely a consolation.

February began with a 4-3 home loss to North Sunderland Reserves in a seven-goal thriller at Forge Road. Frank Field opened the scoring in the 6th minute, volleying in after a Hakeem Tulloch cross and a Chay Peel save. We equalised in the 28th minute through a Marcel Byrne penalty after Kyle Pike fouled Flynn McNaughton in the box. Two minutes later, we took the lead as a long goal kick from Peel was flicked on to Liam Lightfoot, whose shot deflected off Daniel Lourenço past goalkeeper Hari Coleman. Field headed in his second for North Sunderland in first-half stoppage time and Lourenço’s stunning 30-yard free-kick in the 60th minute made it 3-2. Another Lourenço free-kick in the 66th minute led to a penalty after McNaughton fouled Quinn Suggett, which Lourenço converted. McNaughton scored his first goal for us in the 92nd minute, finishing low at the near post from a Lambert through ball, but it wasn’t enough.

Our final game of February was a top-of-the-table clash with Alnmouth United at Forge Road, finishing 2-2 with both teams level on 27 points beforehand.
Alnmouth struck first in the 8th minute through Ola Holmes’ spectacular volley from a Louis Evans cross. We equalised in the 19th minute as Ewan Forster played a ball over the top for Flynn McNaughton, who half-volleyed into the bottom left corner past goalkeeper Venison. Liam Lightfoot gave us the lead in the 59th minute, curling a shot into the bottom right corner after a lay-off from Ardelan Ameen. Alnmouth levelled in the 77th minute when Blaine Kellacher set up Arnór Jónsson, who blasted the ball down the middle past Peel.

With 16 games played and five remaining, we’re top of the North Northumberland League on 28 points, level with Alnmouth United and Swarland but ahead on goal difference (13). Alnmouth have a 6 goal difference, Swarland 5. Berwick Town sit 4th on 27 points with a 6 goal difference.

Lowick United are 5th on 21 points, North Sunderland Reserves 6th on 19, Longhoughton Rangers 7th on 15 and Ellington Under 21s last with 14 points.

Our remaining fixtures include Longhoughton, Lowick United, Berwick Town, Ellington Under 21s and a final game against North Sunderland Reserves on 20th April 2024 at Forge Road. Meanwhile, Alnmouth face Swarland and Berwick Town back-to-back and Swarland also play Berwick and Alnmouth consecutively in March, before facing Lowick United in their final game. The title race remains wide open as we head into the final stretch.

Berwick Town Take Top Spot After Bransay Victory

Bransay Athletic fell to a 4-2 defeat against Berwick Town in a crucial top-of-the-table clash at Ella Park, surrendering their lead in the North Northumberland League.

The loss, which saw Berwick Town race to a 4-0 advantage within 51 minutes, has handed the hosts the top spot with only two games remaining in the season.

The match started disastrously for Bransay, with a penalty conceded just 25 seconds in. Veteran centre-back Chris Swailes tripped Berwick’s Jordan Shotton in the six-yard box as a low cross from Aksel Botcherby came in. Aodhan Kell stepped up and despite Bransay goalkeeper Chay Peel guessing the right way, he couldn’t get down quickly enough to stop the effort into the bottom left corner in the 2nd minute.

Berwick doubled their lead in the 31st minute through Delroy Ross, who glanced a Carwyn Williams corner into the far corner. Williams was instrumental again in the 37th minute, receiving a Dan Were free-kick on the halfway line before sprinting to the byline and delivering a first-time cross. Aksel Botcherby met it at the near post, flicking the ball underneath Peel’s dive and into the far corner to make it 3-0.

The fourth goal came in the 51st minute after a partially cleared corner. Delroy Ross controlled the ball and played a short pass into the box for Aodhan Kell, who turned and fed Chay Warriner on the edge of the area. Warriner’s first-time strike was parried horribly by Peel into his own net, capping a nightmare performance for the Bransay keeper.

Bransay mounted a late comeback attempt, starting in the 75th minute. Ardelan Ameen flighted a ball over the top to Danny Lambert on the left wing, who took it down, cut inside and fired a low shot into the far corner past Ashley Williams. Ameen was at the heart of the second goal in the 82nd minute, volleying a pass from the halfway line to Marcel Byrne, who linked up with Flynn McNaughton. McNaughton returned the ball to Ameen, who had advanced and he spotted Byrne’s run into the area, where the striker struck across goal to make it 4-2. Despite the late rally, Berwick held firm to secure the three points.

The result sees Berwick Town take the lead in the North Northumberland League with 36 points, while Bransay drop to second on 34 points. Alnmouth United’s 1-0 win over Swarland has lifted them to third on 34 points, pushing Swarland down to fourth with 31 points. North Sunderland Reserves, despite a 5-1 win over Alnmouth United two weeks ago, suffered a loss to 7th-placed Longhoughton Rangers and sit 5th, ahead of Lowick United in 6th.

With two games left, Berwick Town face a potential title-deciding clash against Alnmouth United at Ella Park, before taking on bottom side Ellington Under 21s, who have only managed four wins in 19 games. Alnmouth United, after their trip to Berwick, will face Longhoughton Rangers.

Bransay, on paper, have an easier run-in, starting with Ellington Under 21s, followed by a final-day match against North Sunderland Reserves at Forge Road on 20th April 2024. Swarland, now five points off the top, face Longhoughton Rangers and Lowick United, keeping their faint hopes alive. The title race remains on a knife-edge as the season nears its dramatic conclusion.

Adding to Bransay’s challenges, the club confirmed the departure of starting left-back Tom Weaver to Robin AFC in Hull. Weaver, who played 18 games this season, leaves a gap in the squad at a critical juncture.

Bransay Chairman to Step Down for Upcoming Election

Bransay Athletic chairman Mick Thorsen has announced he will not seek re-election for a third term, bringing an end to his tenure at the helm of the North Northumberland League club.

Thorsen, who has led the club through a transformative period, made the announcement today, 12th April 2024, with elections to determine his successor scheduled for 1st June.

Thorsen’s decision comes at a critical juncture for Bransay, who are in the thick of a tight title race, sitting 2nd with 34 points after a recent 4-2 loss to Berwick Town. With two games remaining in the season, the club is vying for the title and promotion to Level 17, trailing Berwick Town by two points. Thorsen did not specify his reasons for stepping down, leaving fans and stakeholders eager to see who will take the reins next.

Five candidates have put their names forward to replace Thorsen: Charlie Bell, Zaheer Langton, Jai Peareth, Ted Dunstan and Jerome Curtis. Each brings a unique perspective to the role, with the election set to shape the future direction of Bransay Athletic as they aim to build on their recent on-pitch success.

Charlie Bell, a local businessman, has been a vocal supporter of grassroots football in the region. Zaheer Langton, a former player for Bransay in the early 2000s, is keen to strengthen ties with the community and expand the club’s youth setup. Jai Peareth, a marketing executive, aims to boost the club’s visibility. Ted Dunstan, a long-time Bransay fan and current committee member, focuses on maintaining the club’s traditions while ensuring financial stability. Finally, Jerome Curtis, an entrepreneur with experience in sports management, wants to professionalise operations and attract higher-calibre players to push Bransay up the football pyramid.

As the election approaches, the Bransay faithful will be watching closely, hopeful that the new chairman can lead the club to promotion this season and beyond. With the title race heating up and a new era on the horizon, the coming weeks promise to be a defining period for the club.

Bransay Snatch Late Win to Retake Top Spot

Bransay Athletic reclaimed the top spot in the North Northumberland League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Ellington Under 21s at Ella Park, setting up a thrilling final day in the title race.

The win came just a day after Alnmouth United defeated Berwick Town 2-0 at Old Shielfield, with Ola Holmes scoring a penalty and Blaine Kellacher adding a 55th-minute goal, briefly placing Alnmouth at the summit for the first time this season.

Bransay’s match against Ellington Under 21s was a rollercoaster, with four goals in the final 10 minutes deciding the outcome. The game took an early turn for the worse when Marcel Byrne was sent off in the 19th minute for a two-footed challenge on Joey Tremble, leaving Bransay with 10 men for over 70 minutes.

Ellington capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 52nd minute. Malik Townsend played a precise ball over the top to Romar Noel who outpaced Bransay’s left-back John Roberts and delivered a low first-time cross across the face of goal. Chay Bujara was on hand to tap in, giving Ellington a 1-0 lead.

Despite being a man down, Bransay fought back and equalised in the 82nd minute through Flynn McNaughton. Danny Lambert’s outswinging corner saw Romar Noel shove Chris Swailes in the back, prompting referee Emily Heaslip to award a penalty. McNaughton stepped up and although goalkeeper Jai Moan guessed the right way, the striker’s powerful effort into the right corner made it 1-1.

McNaughton struck again in the 85th minute to put Bransay ahead. A poorly hit goal kick from Chay Peel found Lambert on the halfway line, who turned and played a ball over Ellington’s high defensive line. McNaughton latched onto it, took one touch and beat Moan at his near post to make it 2-1, seemingly securing the win.

Ellington, however, equalised in the 88th minute. Joey Tremble flicked on a goal kick to Bujara, who raced down the right and pulled the ball back into the box. Ashley Moore was outmuscled by Charlie Uddgren, but the ball fell to Malik Townsend, who smashed it past Peel to make it 2-2. A draw would have left Bransay in 3rd place behind Alnmouth and Berwick Town.

But Bransay weren’t done. In the 89th minute, Lambert dinked the ball over Reece Jacobs’ foot down the right flank before finding Uddgren, who had underlapped into a central position. Substitute Mathys Reynaud, who had replaced McNaughton seconds before, made a perfectly timed run. Uddgren’s pass found him and with his first touch of the game, Reynaud slotted past Moan to seal a 3-2 victory.

The result puts Bransay top of the league with 37 points and a 14 goal difference, level on points with Alnmouth United, who have a 6 goal difference, while Berwick Town sit 3rd with 36 points and a 8 goal difference. Swarland, on 31 points, are now mathematically out of the title race.

With one game remaining, Bransay will face 7th-placed North Sunderland Reserves at Forge Road on 20th April 2024, where a win could secure the title and promotion. Alnmouth United travel to Westfield Park to take on 6th-placed Longhoughton Rangers, while Berwick Town face 8th-placed Ellington Under 21s at Ella Park. The final day promises to be a nail-biter as Bransay aim to lift the trophy on their home pitch.

We opened March with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Longhoughton Rangers at Westfield Park on 2nd March. The decisive moment came in the 33rd minute when winger Emmanuel Eze was judged to have pushed our winger Ewan Forster in the box as a Haliva cross came in, leading to a penalty. Marcel Byrne stepped up and converted, securing the three points for us.

Two weeks later, we triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling match against Lowick United at Forge Road. Danny Lambert headed us into the lead in the 7th minute from a Tom Weaver cross to the back post. Weaver assisted again in the 22nd minute, swinging in another great cross for Marcel Byrne to head home. In the 37th minute, Charlie Uddgren played the ball back to Chris Swailes, who spotted Flynn McNaughton’s run and delivered a perfect ball over the top for McNaughton to finish with his first touch past Jeff Fraser. Lowick pulled one back in the 51st minute through Andrew McGregor, who tapped in after a deflected effort was saved by Chay Peel. Three minutes later, McGregor set up former Bransay midfielder Alex Novak, who struck a stunning 35-yard effort into the top corner to make it 3-2. We extended our lead in the 74th minute with a penalty after Leiweke brought down McNaughton in the box, which Byrne smashed into the left corner. McGregor scored a sensational 40-yard looping half-volley in the 93rd minute, but we held on for the win despite Lowick’s highlight-reel goals.

Our next match was a 4-2 defeat to Berwick Town at Ella Park on 30th March, a 1st vs 2nd clash that saw Berwick take top spot. They raced to a 4-0 lead by the 51st minute, starting with a 2nd-minute penalty from Aodhan Kell after Chris Swailes tripped Jordan Shotton in the box. Delroy Ross glanced in a Carwyn Williams corner in the 31st minute and Williams assisted again in the 37th minute, crossing for Aksel Botcherby to flick in at the near post. In the 51st minute, Ross set up Kell, who passed to Chay Warriner, whose shot was parried into his own net by Peel. We mounted a late comeback with Danny Lambert scoring in the 75th minute from an Ardelan Ameen ball and Ameen assisting Byrne in the 82nd minute to make it 4-2, but it wasn’t enough.

We bounced back with a dramatic 3-2 win over Ellington Under 21s at Ella Park on 14th April. Down to 10 men after Marcel Byrne’s red card in the 19th minute for a two-footed challenge, we fell behind in the 52nd minute to a Chay Bujara goal, set up by Romar Noel. Flynn McNaughton equalised with a penalty in the 82nd minute after Noel fouled Swailes and McNaughton scored again in the 85th minute, latching onto a Lambert ball over the top. Ellington equalised in the 88th minute through Malik Townsend, but substitute Mathys Reynaud, on his first touch after coming on, scored the winner in the 89th minute from a Uddgren pass, putting us back on top with one game left.

On the final day, 20th April, we sealed the title with a 3-0 win over North Sunderland Reserves at Forge Road. Ewan Forster opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, hitting a half-volley into the bottom right corner after Danny Lambert played a short corner to the edge of the area. In the 54th minute, Lambert’s free-kick was headed away, but Reynaud headed it back into the box, where John Roberts stole the ball and scored from close range. The title was secured in the 70th minute when Luis Dodds fouled James Dodd-Thompson, leading to a penalty that Mathys Reynaud converted, sparking wild celebrations.

We finished the season as champions with 40 points, one point ahead of Berwick Town and two ahead of Alnmouth United, who squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Longhoughton Rangers on the final day. Our promotion to Level 17 - the only path from Level 18 - is confirmed, though our division for the 2024/25 campaign is yet to be determined. With plenty of work ahead and a new chairman to guide us after Mick Thorsen’s departure, the future looks bright for Bransay Athletic.

Bell Elected as Bransay Athletic Chairman

Bransay Athletic have ushered in a new era with the election of 47-year-old Charlie Bell as the club’s new chairman, replacing outgoing chairman Mick Thorsen.

The fan-led election, held on 1st June 2024, saw Bell emerge as the preferred candidate among a field that included Zaheer Langton, Jai Peareth, Ted Dunstan and Jerome Curtis. Bell’s appointment comes on the heels of Bransay’s triumphant 2023/24 season, where they clinched the North Northumberland League title with 40 points and secured promotion to the North East Combination League Division Two.

A local businessman with a deep passion for grassroots football, Bell campaigned on a platform of improving facilities at Forge Road and strengthening the club’s community ties. His vision resonated with the Bransay faithful, who turned out in numbers to cast their votes and ensure his victory. Bell’s election also coincides with a reshuffle in the club’s board of directors. Torvald Gunnarsen will remain on the board, but Sigrid Halvorsen and Lena Eriksen have stepped down. Replacing them are Alin Lazăr, a 40-year-old Romanian-English director with a background in sports administration and Marlon Raymond, a 39-year-old with experience in community outreach programs.

Bell expressed his gratitude to the fans and outlined his ambitions for the club, while also taking time to praise manager Callum Baird for his remarkable leadership. “I’m absolutely honoured to be elected as chairman of Bransay Athletic,” Bell said. “The fans have shown incredible faith in me and I’m determined to repay that trust by taking this club to new heights. We’ve just won promotion and that’s a testament to the phenomenal work of Callum Baird. He’s a brilliant manager - his passion, tactical nous and ability to unite this squad have been key to our success. I’m excited to work closely with him as we prepare for the challenges of next season and beyond.”

With Bell at the helm and a refreshed board, Bransay Athletic are poised for an exciting future as they step up for the 2024/25 campaign. The club’s focus will now turn to squad preparations and facility upgrades, with the new chairman eager to build on the momentum of a title-winning season.
