Switching a Player's International Preference

I've gotten a bit bored with my Scunthorpe save and decided to take over as manager of my beloved Ireland. Robbie Keane (Yes him... Not Roy!!) just got sacked for poor performances in the 2018 WC qualifiers. I was swifty appointed and began the search for quality Irish players.

My main problem, a lot of the players who I'd like to call up reject my call-up because they will "only consider a call-up at this time from (say) England". These guys are >24yrs of age without a chance of being called up to their "home" country and two are actually in my club team and I'm on their list of favourite personnel.

Is there any way to interact with them to get them to choose Ireland over his first nationality?

PS: Also, hardly a single decent Irish regen in my game unless you count the lads coming through Manchester Utd with PA of about 140 but still first preference for England.
Maybe you could by doing good in qualifications and winning games.
It's a bit of a catch 22. I need good players to help achieve good results and improve the world ranking (currently 72nd!!) but players won't make themselves available unless we are a top team.

I've scheduled 6 friendlies for 2018 before the WC (which we're not in obviously) including against Brazil, Argentina, England, France, etc. Might be a bad idea if I get hammered in all of them, but if we can get a few good results against top teams it can't hurt...
I had got increasingly frustrated with international management when it came to a important qualifier for england match e.t.c the managers withdrawn half of the players from the match only for me to lose to ukraine, and france hopefully on FM2012 they will vastly improve the International side of the game where you can try an interact with retired international players i.e carragher e.t.c
